Between 1978 and 1987 52 cases of death by burning or in connection with fire (13 females and 39 males) were examined at the Institute of Legal Medicine of the Medical School of Hannover. The causes were fires in flats (25), cars (15) and buildings(4), clothes set on fire (3) and explosions (3). In two cases death was caused by scalding. These cases could be divided into accidents (30), over 1/3 caused by smoking (11)), suicides (9) and homicides (6). The other seven cases could not be clarified definitively. Evidence of CO-elevation (38), soot inhalation (33), petechiae (11) and "crow's feet"

BACKGROUND: Cardiac arrest following severe burn injury is rare but devastating, reflecting profound systemic compromise from hypovolemia, hypoxia, toxic exposure, or metabolic derangement. Despite recognition of these mechanisms, data on incidence, causes, and outcomes remain limited, and no burn-specific resuscitation guidance exists.
METHODS: A scoping review was performed using the Joanna Briggs Institute framework and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched to August 2025 for studies describing cardiac arrest in adult burn patients. Data were thematically synthesized by m

BACKGROUND: Fluid resuscitation after a burn injury is one of the crucial aspects of acute therapy. The Parkland formula is a quick solution for determining the amount of fluid necessary in a specific situation, although it is not strictly followed or used in current practice. Therefore, we aimed to assess the association between a deviation from the Parkland formula and in-hospital mortality.
METHODS: Based on data from 2235 burn patients recorded in the German Burn Registry from January 1st 2015 to December 31st 2022, we evaluate the relative deviation from the Parkland formula in either a

On June 13, 2020, a liquefied petroleum gas tanker exploded in Wenling. Here, the authors describe the mass casualty emergency response to the explosion. The authors collected the medical records of 176 inpatients at 8 hospitals in Taizhou and Hangzhou. The 176 inpatients with blast injuries comprised 70 females and 106 males, with an average age of 45.48 ± 19.96 years, and more than half of the patients were farmers. They were transported to six hospitals distributed around the explosion site in Taizhou in the initial rescue period and were grouped according to their new injury severity score

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether selective decontamination of the digestive tract (SDD) attenuates organ dysfunction in critically ill burn patients.
BACKGROUND: The effect of SDD on the development and progression of organ dysfunction, as an important determinant of mortality in burned patients, is still unknown. We asked whether organ dysfunction is mitigated by treatment with SDD.
METHODS: Patients with burns >20% of total body surface or suspected inhalation injury from a randomized placebo-controlled trial were analyzed to determine the relationship between treatment received (placebo or

The current descriptive analysis was designed to document the common epidemiologic characteristics and outcomes of burn injuries, and age-specific mortality patterns covering all age groups admitted for treatment to the Burn Center of Adana City Training and Research Hospital. Medical records were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were stratified into two age groups as pediatric and adults, and then into 10 sub-age groups. Among the 946 patients of the study population, there were 24 mortalities with a mortality rate of 2.5%. Patients within the age range of 70 to 79 years had the highest

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated safety and effect of propranolol on adult patients with severe burn.
METHODS: A prospective study was conducted on 124 severely adult burn patients who were randomly divided into propranolol and non-propranolol group. Propranolol was given by nasogastric tube to achieve the target of lowering 15-20% of initial heart rate.
RESULTS: Average dose of propranolol was 1.9 ± 0.5 mg/kg/day ranging from 0.9 to 3.3 mg/kg/day and was not affected by burn extent and inhalation injury. Mean heart rate reduced by 21.2% during the 28 day period. Recorded adverse events i

Intramuscular bleeding of the tongue is frequently observed in autopsy cases of house fire victims. The meaning of this finding has not yet been fully discussed. We examined 69 autopsy cases of house fire victims and investigated several factors contributing to intramuscular bleeding of the tongue. Victims comprised 45 males and 24 females, ranging in age from 1 to 95 years old. Sixty-four cases (93%) involved severely charred bodies, while the remaining five bodies displayed slight burns. Factors studied were age, sex, posture of the body at the scene of the fire, degree of burn injury and ca

Blast-related traumatic brain injuries (bTBIs), once considered the signature wound of wars, have increasingly affected civilian populations due to the rise in terrorist attacks and industrial accidents. These injuries are complex, resulting from a combination of primary blast effects, secondary projectiles, tertiary impacts, and quaternary injuries from burns and toxic gas inhalation. Understanding the clinical presentation, management strategies, and outcomes of bTBIs is essential for enhancing patient care and improving prognosis. We report a case of industrial-related severe bTBI with open

A forward evacuation hospital functioned in the southern front in October 1973 Israeli-Arab War as an intermediate unit in the Israeli casualty management logistics. Casualties were characterized by frequent multiple-system injuries and variable combinations of penetrating wounds, blunt trauma, burns, and inhalation injury, with an increased incidence of associated blunt trauma. As the result of the systems organization, the EH was able to provide the wounded with early intensive and definitive resuscitation therapy which permitted further evacuation of the casualties to the central hospitals

PURPOSE: Acute kidney injury (AKI) increases morbidity and mortality in major burns. We evaluated the impact of a standardized burn protocol implemented in 2015 (goal-directed fluid resuscitation, early albumin, and proactive renal replacement therapy [RRT] initiation) on RRT utilization and survival, and conducted a nationwide survey to benchmark current practices across burn centers in Taiwan.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of major burn patients admitted to a tertiary burn center in Taipei from January 2003 to September 2023, divided into 2003-2014 and 2015-2023 cohorts

The clinical presentation of infective endocarditis varies according to the etiologic agent and the host. In elderly individuals, infective endocarditis can be difficult to diagnose and poses a challenge for the physician. The course of subacute infective endocarditis is indolent, and the onset of cardiac structural lesion is slow and gradual. In elderly patients, anemia and weight loss are occasionally the only or the most striking symptoms. In such cases, the clinical reasoning process leads to a hypothesis of wasting syndrome or neoplastic disease, especially when there is no fever. We repo

We report on a 26-year-old woman who during early infancy (6 months) suffered from a chemical burn of the skin and upper airways due to spill of formic acid powder. Twenty years after the initial injury, she presented with dyspnea and stridor due to severe tracheal stenosis. Several interventional bronchoscopic manipulations were initiated: incision of the stenotic lesion with Nd:YAG laser and dilatation with a valvuloplasty balloon which enabled silicone stent placement which was subsequently kept in place for 3 years. Complications during the 4th year after stenting led to the successful rep

A 12-year retrospective review of severe burn patients who received cultured epithelial autografts (CEA) at the Singapore General Hospital Burns Centre from January 2005 to December 2016 was carried out. During this period, two different surgical modalities were employed to manage these burn injuries. In the earlier period, following early excision of the burn wounds, exposed surfaces were covered with a combination of split thickness skin autografts (STSG) and allografts. Surfaces covered with skin allografts were subsequently debrided of the allo-epidermis in about 3 weeks later, exposing th

Despite the growing recognition of self-harm as a pressing public health issue, demographic risk factors of self-inflicted burn (SIB) injuries in the United States have not been extensively described. In this retrospective study, we seek to identify demographic risk factors and patterns associated with SIB injuries at an urban burn center. Charts were reviewed of patients admitted to a single American Burn Association-verified burn unit between 2015 and 2023 with a history of SIB injury, identified with ICD10 code X76.XXXA. Descriptive statistics, Welch's t-test of unequal variances, and chi-s

Herein, we assessed the utility of the Canadian Study of Health and Aging Clinical Frailty Scale (CSHA-CFS) to predict burn-specific outcomes. We hypothesized that frail patients are at greater risk for burn-related complications and require increased healthcare support at discharge. Patients 50 years and older admitted to our institution for burn injuries between July 2009 and June 2019 were included. Demographics, comorbidities, pre-injury functional status, injury and hospitalization information, complications (graft loss, acute respiratory failure, and acute kidney disease [AKI]), mortalit
