Orthopedic felt often can be used quite simply and with great effectiveness to relieve pain referable to positional, traumatic or inflammatory abnormalities of bone, tendon or muscle. Trial of protective and supportive padding with this material is particularly recommended in noninflammatory olecranon bursitis; in beginning ganglion formation; in stenosing tendovaginitis, particularly of the flexor tendons of fingers; in painful heel (subcalcaneal bursitis); and in the correction of postural deformities or imbalances.

The medial collateral ligament (MCL) is made up of different components and spans the medial aspect of the knee. With injuries the superficial or deep and posterior components may be involved. A variety of conditions including MCL bursitis, medial osteoarthritis, medial cellulitis, medial bursitis, medial meniscal cyst, meniscocapsular separation, and retinacular tear may present with high signal surrounding the MCL fibers and simulate an MCL tear.

OBJECTIVE: Musculoskeletal ultrasonography allows real-time imaging of joint structures and may be used to complement clinical examination in rheumatological practice. We compared ultrasonography (US) with clinical examination (CE) in the detection of effusion, suprapatellar bursitis, and Baker's cyst of the knee in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in order to determine whether US provided additional clinical information.
METHODS: A total of 22 patients with RA (ACR criteria) underwent independent clinical and US examination of both knees for suprapatellar bursitis, knee effusion, and presence of Ba…

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE WORK: With the term "Haglund›s syndrome" we define a condition characterized clinically by pain at the insertion of Achille›s tendon and, anatomopathologically, due to the presence of retrocalcaneal bursitis and at times associated with an insertional Achille›s tendinopathy. The aim of the work is to correlate the most reliable and reproducible treatment possible to the aforementioned variables of Haglund›s syndrome.
METHODS: The classic syndromic picture is characterized by pain caused by retrocalcaneal bursitis. In some cases, symptoms of insertional tendinopathy a…

We aimed to investigate clinical and ultrasound signs of shoulder overuse injuries in professional bullfighters; side-to-side differences (dominant vs. non-dominant); and to determine potential differences according to bullfighters’ categories. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted. Thirty professional and active bullfighters were assessed. A bilateral ultrasound assessment of the subacromial bursa, long biceps head tendon (LHBT), and rotator cuff was performed to determine the presence of bursitis, subluxation, partial or total tendon rupture, tenosynovitis, or calcification. S…

Osteochondroma is a common benign entity. However, symptomatic complications may arise that raise the question of malignant degeneration. Bursa formation about an osteochondroma may clinically and symptomatically mimic malignant degeneration. Magnetic resonance imaging usually permits unequivocal diagnosis distinguishing between secondary bursitis and malignant degeneration. Secondary bursitis can most often be managed conservatively. Magnetic resonance imaging also can differentiate other less common benign complications such as pseudoaneurysm formation caused by the exostosis and fracture at…

INTRODUCTION: Acute monoarthritis (AM) represents a relevant cause of morbidity that requires prompt medical care. The study of synovial fluid becomes relevant to allow a rapid diagnostic approach. The main objective of the study was to determine the frequency and clinical-analytical characteristics of episodes of AM and acute bursitis evaluated in a hospital during a period of 6 years.
METHODS: Cross-sectional retrospective analytical study in a hospital at Córdoba, Argentina. All episodes of acute monoarthritis and bursitis that occurred in patients aged 18 years or older between 2012 and 2…

Snapping scapula syndrome represents a rare entity in shoulder surgery. Clinically, it presents as shoulder pain and loud crepitus during shoulder movement. Moreover, glenohumeral bursitis can cause additional pain. Snapping scapula syndrome is caused by an increased angulation of the superomedial part of the scapula combined with bursitis. Other common causes such as subscapular osteochondroma or rib fracture non-unions were excluded. We report a 24-year-old female patient with persisting shoulder pain and disturbing crepitus during movement of the left shoulder. Radiographic examination reve…

The cause of musculoskeletal symptoms in polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is not clearly defined because joint synovitis may only partially explain the diffuse discomfort. MRI imaging of the shoulders, hip and extremities of patients with PMR has been analyzed. MRI showed that subacromial and subdeltoid bursitis of the shoulders and iliopectineal bursitis and hip synovitis are the predominant and most frequently observed lesions in active PMR. The inflammation of the bursae associated with glenohumeral synovitis, bicipital tenosynovitis and hip synovitis may explain the diffuse discomfort and morn…

RATIONALE: Power Doppler ultrasonography (PDUS) in musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) is a sensitive and reliable method for the assessment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The association between ultrasound-detectable forefoot bursae and the development of RA has gained attention. However, a few studies have evaluated the utility of PDUS for examining forefoot bursae in early RA. We report the case of an RA patient who developed reduced foot mobility and had detectable intermetatarsal bursitis with remarkable power Doppler (PD) signals in MSUS at the onset of RA.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 40-year-old …

Chemokines produced by synoviocytes of the subacromial bursa are up-regulated in subacromial bursitis and rotator cuff disease. We hypothesized that SDF-1α production in bursal synoviocytes may be induced by local cytokines such as interleukin IL-1β and IL-6. Subacromial bursa specimens were obtained from patients undergoing shoulder surgery. Bursal specimens were stained with anti-human antibodies to IL-1, IL-6, and SDF-1α by immunohistochemistry and compared to normal and rheumatoid controls. Bursal cells were also isolated from specimens and cultured. Early passaged cells were then treated …

In the quadriplegic patient, the periolecranon region is subjected to continuous and permanent mechanical shearing and pressure forces. As the sensation of this region is partially impaired secondary to the level of the spinal cord injury, this anatomical area is prone to develop bursitis and then a chronic open draining wound. This type of wound is refractory to conservative measures. Surgical closure of this functional area can represent a challenge to the plastic and reconstructive surgeon because not all of the surgical options available are suitable for spinal cord injury patients. Theref…

In brief Knee bursitis often mimics other brief Pathologies, making correct diagnosis necessary to initiate appropriate treatment. Most commonly affected are the prepatellar, pes anserine, tibial collateral ligament, and two infrapatellar bursae. Other common bursitic conditions include Baker's cysts and posttraumatic adventitious hemorrhagic bursitis. Most of these can be treated conservatively with aspiration of fluid from the bursa, rest, ice, immobilization, and injection of a corticosteroid and analgesic combination. Some chronic bursitic conditions may require surgical excision of the bu…

Haglund's syndrome encompasses several different pathologies, including Haglund's deformity, insertional Achilles tendonopathy, retrocalcaneal bursitis, and superficial bursitis. Traditionally treated with open surgery, there is increasing interest in a more minimally invasive approach to this difficult region to reduce complications and improve the rate and ease of recovery. We review the evidence available for 2 of these techniques: the endoscopic calcaneoplasty and percutaneous Zadek's calcaneal osteotomy (also known as Keck and Kelly's osteotomy). The senior author's classification for man…

Non-small cell lung cancer adenocarcinoma in the past decade has targeted therapies as the cornerstone for therapy. In specific patients with epidermal growth factor receptor mutation have three different therapy approaches with the tyrosine kinase inhibitors: erlotinib, gefitinib and afatinib. Nowadays we can use tyrosine kinase inhibitors as second line treatment for squamous cell carcinoma. We present a case with a patient with squamous cell carcinoma receiving afatinib tyrosine kinase inhibitor who presented elbow bursitis or olecranon bursitis in both elbows.

Anatomic dissection of the elbows of 63 cadavers selected at random were performed in an attempt to find out whether the incidental disparity of olecranon bursitis between children and adults might be explained by anatomic differences. The volume of the bursae was determined by syringes used for methylene blue injections. There were no olecranon bursae in children under the age of 7 years; the volume of the bursae increased with age; and the bursa was usually larger on the right, i.e., the common dominant side. The formation of the bursae in late childhood can explain the low incidence of olec…
