We present the MR imaging findings of a girl with horizontal gaze palsy and progressive scoliosis (HGPPS). HGPPS is a rare congenital disorder characterized by absence of conjugate horizontal eye movements and accompanied by progressive scoliosis developing in childhood and adolescence. MR imaging depicted brain-stem hypoplasia with absence of the facial colliculi, presence of a deep midline pontine cleft (split pons sign), and a butterfly configuration of the medulla. These MR imaging features suggest the diagnosis of HGPPS and correlate with the clinical findings. We hypothesize that maldeve

The paper provides the data available in the literature and their own findings of immunopathological impairments in the central nervous system, and spinal cord and polyneuropathies. The most detailed comparison of immunological and clinicotomographic changes is made in system lupus erythematosus. With this, a correlation is shown between peripheral vascular diseases (butterfly, capillarites, reticular livedo, Raynaud's syndrome), the levels of circulating immune complexes and local neurological abnormality. Particular attention is paid to the antiphospholipid syndrome. A relationship is found

The influence of gut and gonad bacterial communities on insect physiology, behaviour, and ecology is increasingly recognised. Parasitism by parasitoid wasps alters many physiological processes in their hosts, including gut bacterial communities. However, it remains unclear whether these changes are restricted to the gut or also occur in other tissues and fluids, and the mechanisms underlying such changes are unknown. We hypothesise that host microbiome changes result from the injection of calyx fluid (that contain symbiotic viruses known as polydnaviruses) and venom during parasitoid ovipositi

Symbiotic relationships may provide organisms with key innovations that aid in the establishment of new niches. For example, during oviposition, some species of parasitoid wasps, whose larvae develop inside the bodies of other insects, inject polydnaviruses into their hosts. These symbiotic viruses disrupt host immune responses, allowing the parasitoid's progeny to survive. Here we show that symbiotic polydnaviruses also have a downside to the parasitoid's progeny by initiating a multitrophic chain of interactions that reveals the parasitoid larvae to their enemies. These enemies are hyperpara

Cyanogenic glucosides are phytoanticipins known to be present in more than 2500 plant species. They are considered to have an important role in plant defense against herbivores due to bitter taste and release of toxic hydrogen cyanide upon tissue disruption. Some specialized herbivores, especially insects, preferentially feed on cyanogenic plants. Such herbivores have acquired the ability to metabolize cyanogenic glucosides or to sequester them for use in their predator defense. A few species of Arthropoda (within Diplopoda, Chilopoda, Insecta) are able to de novo synthesize cyanogenic glucosi

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a valuable diagnostic tool in prehospital and transport medicine, particularly for critically ill patients with hemodynamic instability. This case study illustrates the use of focused cardiac and inferior vena cava ultrasound in the prehospital transport of a patient with septic shock. The imaging obtained in flight guided both fluid management and vasopressor titration, which improved clinical decision making in a resource-limited, dynamic environment. Using the handheld Butterfly iQ+ ultrasound device facilitated high-quality images and documentation enrou

The title compound, C20H12N2OS, is a 10-ethynyl-10H-pheno-thia-zine derivative. The pheno-thia-zine unit has a butterfly shape, where the folding angle between the two benzene rings is 153.87 (7)°, which is almost as in other reported pheno-thia-zine derivatives. The dihedral angle between the mean plane including the C atoms bonded to the pheno-thia-zine N atom and the benzene ring of the nitro-benzene group is 10.34 (5)°. The near planar geometry of the mol-ecule is reasonably explained by intra-molecular charge-transfer inter-actions.

We present the case of a 36-year-old male who sustained a straddle injury with classic signs of a urethral injury. He had blood at the meatus, a high-riding prostate, a butterfly hematoma, and he was unable to void. A retrograde urethrogram confirmed a bulbar urethral injury. After attempts at primary realignment with a Foley failed, he underwent suprapubic tube placement. However, when his physical examination worsened, an MRI revealed a concomitant injury to his left corpus cavernosum. This is the first reported case in the literature in which blunt trauma to a nonerect penis caused a penile

MURCS association (Mullerian hypoplasia/aplasia, renal agenesis and cervicothoracic somite dysplasia) is emerging as the second most frequent cause of primary amenorrhoea after Turner syndrome. Seven cases have been described and analysed. All cases had absence of uterus and tubes 85% had cervical spine abnormalities such as vertebral fusion, hypoplasia of vertebrae or butterfly vertebrae and short stature and 28% had renal agenesis or ectopy. The latter finding is in contrast to the reports in world literature where the frequency of renal agenesis is higher. There was no familial incidence in

We also explored the conservation of gene families, with a specific focus on the evolution of the ATPase gene family, as this is thought to be reduced in other Ophryocystis lineages. We found that our newly sequenced line …

Lepidoptera typically exhibit a dichotomy in compound eye design: diurnal butterflies possess apposition eyes for high resolution in bright light, whereas nocturnal moths have superposition eyes for enhanced sensitivity under dim conditions. However, exceptions, particularly among diurnal moths, challenge this pattern and offer insights into the evolution of compound eyes in Lepidoptera. In this study, we investigated the compound eye design of the diurnal moth Histia flabellicornis (Fabricius) using light, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy to determine whether it has superpositio…

Pierid species of the Aporia agathon group are among the largest Sino-Himalayan members of genus Aporia, with four conventionally recognised species, namely A. agathon, A. largeteaui, A. gigantea, and A. lemoulti. Recent publications indicated that some of these species may contain more than one species despite their similar morphological characters. The present research analysed this group of butterflies using mitogenomic data, and proved that A. japfuensisstat. nov., A. bifurcatastat. nov., A. moltrechtireinst. stat., A. kuangtungensisstat. nov. and A. omotoistat. nov. should be recognised a…

Pieris rapae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) poses a significant threat to Brassicaceae crops, leading to substantial losses annually. Repeated insecticide applications are widely used to protect crops and increase the resistance of P. rapae. Exploring the biochemical and molecular basis of insecticide tolerance in P. rapae is crucial for achieving effective insect suppuration and implementing resistance control strategies. In our research, emamectin benzoate (EBZ) resistance was developed in P. rapae strain through selective pressure over 15 generations. Moreover, the biochemical mechanisms underlyin

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are similar to be characterized by thromboembolic events and various clinical manifestations. We experienced a 21-year-old man with acute iliocaval deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Primary APS was initially diagnosed on the criteria, and after multidisciplinary treatment, iliocaval DVT was gradually regressed. Six months later, the patient complained of acute enteritis, followed by peripheral neuropathy and butterfly lupus. SLE was diagnosed, which suggested that the onset of SLE was preceded by APS. This case raises the questio

PURPOSE: The Primavera is considered amongst the greatest and controversial artistic masterpieces worldwide painted by renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli. The aim was to identify any underlying medical foundations for the painting.
METHODS: Observational study.
RESULTS: The painting reveals, a 'butterfly' malar rash, bilateral ptosis and a clear neck swelling consistent with a goitre in the figure of Flora. This could be explained by concomitant Graves' disease and systemic lupus erythematosus, or other presentations of multiple autoimmune syndrome.
CONCLUSION: These findings highlight th

Alagille syndrome (ALGS) is a multisystemic disease caused by mutations in genes of Notch pathway, which regulates embryonic cell differentiation and angiogenesis. Clinically, ALGS is characterized by cholestasis, cardiac defects, characteristic facial features, skeletal and ophthalmologic abnormalities. The aim of this review is to illustrate neuroradiological findings in ALGS, which are less well-known and prevalent, including cerebrovascular anomalies (such as aneurysms, dolichoectasia, Moyamoya syndrome and venous peculiarities), Chiari 1 malformation, craniosynostosis, intracranial hypert
