Adjusted ionized calcium (at pH 7.4) and actual ionized calcium (at actual pH) in capillary blood compared for clinical evaluation of patients with disorders of calcium metabolism.

We report results for adjusted ionized calcium (at pH 7.4) and actual ionized calcium (at actual pH) in capillary blood from 183 patients with disorders of calcium metabolism (primary hyperparathyroidism, secondary hyperparathyroidism of malabsorption, primary hypoparathyroidism, Paget's disease, acromegaly, hypercalcemia of malignancy, osteoporosis, sarcoidosis, idiopathic hypercalciuria, and familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia). The correlation and the equation for the linear regression between adjusted ionized calcium (y) and actual ionized calcium (x) were y = 1.011x + 0.005 mmol/L, r = 0…

Calcium in agriculture and crop production.

Calcium (Ca2+) is an essential mineral for plants, functioning both as a nano- to micromolar signaling ion in gene regulation and, at millimolar levels, in nutrition-supporting structural integrity and enzyme activation. These functions depend on adequate fertilization. However, Ca2+ problems stem mainly from hydraulic access and local availability within specific tissues and compartments rather than bulk supply; thus, deficiency can occur even in Ca2+-rich soils due to soil immobilization and physiological constraints. Because Ca2+ is poorly phloem-mobile and moves mainly via transpiration-dr…

Disorders of Calcium in Horses and Foals.

Disorders of calcium homeostasis are frequent in equids with acute and chronic disorders. These animals may have abnormal phosphorus concentrations. Prompt identification and treatment are central for a positive outcome. A basic understanding of calcium regulation facilitates the diagnosis and treatment of calcium dysregulation. In horses, hypocalcemia is more often associated with acute conditions linked to systemic inflammation (eg, sepsis, gastrointestinal diseases), although hypocalcemia is also a feature of hypoparathyroidism and acute kidney injury. Magnesium supplementation should be co…

Metallacyclosilanes of Calcium, Yttrium, and Iron.

Utilizing a choice of α,ω-oligosilanylene diides, it is possible to synthesize a number of heterocyclosilanes with heteroelements of calcium, yttrium, and iron by metathesis reactions with respective metal halides CaI2, YCl3, and FeBr2. 29Si NMR spectroscopic analysis of the calcacyclosilanes suggests that these compounds retain a strong oligosilanylene dianion character, which is more pronounced than in the analogous magnesacyclosilanes. As the electronegativity of calcium lies between potassium and magnesium, silyl calcium reagents should be considered as building blocks with an attractive r…

Integration of Rap1 and Calcium Signaling.

Ca2+ is a universal intracellular signal. The modulation of cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration regulates a plethora of cellular processes, such as: synaptic plasticity, neuronal survival, chemotaxis of immune cells, platelet aggregation, vasodilation, and cardiac excitation-contraction coupling. Rap1 GTPases are ubiquitously expressed binary switches that alternate between active and inactive states and are regulated by diverse families of guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) and GTPase-activating proteins (GAPs). Active Rap1 couples extracellular stimulation with intracellular signaling thr

To B, or not to B: Is calcium the answer?

B lymphocytes are an important component of the adaptive and innate immune system because of their ability to secrete antibodies and to present antigens to T cells, which is critical for immune responses to many pathogens. Abnormal B cell function is the cause of diseases including autoimmune, paraneoplastic, and immunodeficiency disorders. The development, survival, and function of B cells depend on signaling through the B cell receptor (BCR) and costimulatory receptors. One of the signaling pathways induced by antigen binding to the BCR is store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE), which depends on t

A model of calcium homeostasis in the rat.

We developed a model of calcium homeostasis in the rat to better understand the impact of dysfunctions such as primary hyperparathyroidism and vitamin D deficiency on calcium balance. The model accounts for the regulation of calcium intestinal uptake, bone resorption, and renal reabsorption by parathyroid hormone (PTH), vitamin D3, and Ca2+ itself. It is the first such model to incorporate recent findings regarding the role of the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) in the kidney, the presence of a rapidly exchangeable pool in bone, and the delayed response of vitamin D3 synthesis. Accounting for …

Calcium Sensing in the Renal Tubule.

In addition to its prominent role in the parathyroid gland, the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) is expressed in various tissues, including the kidney. This article reviews current data on the calcium-sensing properties of the kidney, the localization of the CaSR protein along the nephron, and its function in calcium homeostasis and in hypercalciuria.

Calcium deposits in the hand and wrist.

Calcium, or calcific, deposition disease in the form of acute calcific periarthritis of the hand and wrist is an uncommon entity that may be confused with more common crystalline or inflammatory arthropathies as well as infection. It is important for the clinician to be aware of this disease process and to include it in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with acutely painful, focal inflammation of the hand or wrist. Nonsurgical management is often sufficient; however, considering the self-limited nature of the disease, accurate diagnosis is essential to avoid unnecessary antibio…

The role of calcium in human aging.

Calcium is an essential nutrient that is necessary for many functions in human health. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body with 99% found in teeth and bone. Only 1% is found in serum. The serum calcium level is tightly monitored to remain within normal range by a complex metabolic process. Calcium metabolism involves other nutrients including protein, vitamin D, and phosphorus. Bone formation and maintenance is a lifelong process. Early attention to strong bones in childhood and adulthood will provide more stable bone mass during the aging years. Research has shown that adequate c…

Quarky calcium release in the heart.

RATIONALE: In cardiac myocytes, "Ca(2+) sparks" represent the stereotyped elemental unit of Ca(2+) release arising from activation of large arrays of ryanodine receptors (RyRs), whereas "Ca(2+) blinks" represent the reciprocal Ca(2+) depletion signal produced in the terminal cisterns of the junctional sarcoplasmic reticulum. Emerging evidence, however, suggests possible substructures in local Ca(2+) release events. OBJECTIVE: With improved detection ability and sensitivity provided by simultaneous spark-blink pair measurements, we investigated possible release events that are smaller than spa

Calcium sulfates: what is the evidence?

Calcium sulphate has been used extensively as a bioabsorbable bone substitute for 90 years. Its advantages include its low cost, ready availability and unlimited supply, lack of donor site morbidity, use as a delivery vehicle for other compounds (especially antibiotics), inherent osteoconductive properties (based on a structure similar to bone), and its proven safety record. We sought to determine the evidence-based medical studies (prospective and/or randomized clinical trials) that support the use of calcium sulphate as a bioabsorbable bone substitute. At the present time, the majority of re…

[Calcium-supplementation in pregnancy--is it a must?].

The pregnant woman's body provides daily doses between 50 and 330 mg to support the developing fetal skeleton. This high fetal demand for calcium in pregnancy is facilitated by profound physiological interactions between mother and fetus. The D-A-CH organization (which represents the German, Austrian and Swiss Nutrition Offices) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the US recommend a daily consumption of 1000 mg calcium for pregnant and lactating women at an age over 19 years. The average consumption of calcium in western countries is about 800 mg in young women. Therefore calcium consumptio…

[Calcium homeostasis in pregnancy and lactation].

The daily required dose of calcium is greatly increased during pregnancy. It is caused by the transition of about 30 g to the fetus and by enhanced urinary excretion. The normal calcium homeostasis is maintained by parathormone (PTH), calcitriol and PTH-related peptide (PTHrP). The concentration of calcitriol is augmented as well as the absorptive surface of the gut. PTHrP is involved in the regulation of placental calcium transport and also in lactation and initiation of labor. Bone turnover is enhanced during pregnancy and sometimes may evoke osteoporosis, especially in bones which form the …

[The calcium receptor and magnesium metabolism].

The calcium receptor (CaR), which regulates Ca(2+) homeostasis, senses Mg(2+) and participates in Mg(2+) metabolism mainly at the parathyroid gland and kidney as well as Ca(2+) metabolism. In the parathyroid gland, Mg(2+) suppresses parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion by the activation of CaR, and regulates the sensitivity of CaR by its unique effect. In the kidney, the activation of CaR inhibits Mg(2+) reabsorption directly or indirectly, mainly at the downstream of loop of Henle.

Hyperparathyroidism and the calcium paradox of aldosteronism.

BACKGROUND: Aldosteronism may account for oxi/nitrosative stress, a proinflammatory phenotype, and wasting in congestive heart failure. We hypothesized that aldosterone/1% NaCl treatment (ALDOST) in rats enhances Ca2+ and Mg2+ excretion and leads to systemic effects, including bone loss. METHODS AND RESULTS: At 1, 2, 4, and 6 weeks of ALDOST, we monitored Ca2+ and Mg2+ excretion, ionized [Ca2+]o and [Mg2+]o, parathyroid hormone and 1-antiproteinase activity in plasma, bone mineral density, bone strength, Ca2+ and Mg2+ content in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and ventricular tissu
