Avian Candidiasis: A Comprehensive Review of Pathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Control.

This review is a comprehensive investigation of avian candidiasis, mainly caused by Candida albicans, although the prevalence of non-albicans Candida species has increased in domestic and wild birds. Avian candidiasis causes significant economic losses in poultry production through increased mortality, cost of treatments, and reduced growth rates, particularly in young birds and intensive farming operations. The pathogenesis section provides a description of the molecular virulence factors such as adhesin-mediated attachment (ALS, Agglutinin-Like Sequence family; HWP1, Hyphal Wall Protein 1), …

Disseminated Papulopustular Candidiasis in an Immunocompetent adult: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Candidiasis represents the most prevalent human fungal infection, originating from either endogenous colonization or exogenous acquisition, and encompasses a wide clinical spectrum ranging from localized mucocutaneous disease to disseminated, life-threatening infection. Extensive cutaneous candidiasis constitutes a relatively underrecognized and underreported manifestation, often overlooked in clinical practice. Broadly, Candida infections are classified into invasive disease (deep-seated involvement with or without candidemia) and mucocutaneous forms. Progression of extensive cuta…

The management of vulvovaginal candidiasis: the results of survey in Lviv, Ukraine.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is a serious clinical and social issue. The questionnaire-based study was performed to assess the management of VVC in Lviv, Ukraine. Totally 408 women were enrolled in the survey. The lifetime prevalence of VVC was high (72.6 %). 35.8 % of women had VVC during the last year with the predominance of 1 episode (72.6 %). The most common symptoms were vaginal itching and cottage cheese-like vaginal discharge, affecting 89.7 % and 71.7 % of women with VVC, respectively. Stress (57.2 %) was the main self-reported factor associated with the VVC, followed by antibiotic …

Sustained Efficacy of Oteseconazole in Women with Recurrent Vulvovaginal Candidiasis.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC) is defined as 3 or more acute symptomatic episodes in a year and affects nearly 138 million women globally. Oteseconazole selectively inhibits fungal cytochrome P51 and has potent activity against Candida albicans and resistant species, including C. glabrata and fluconazole-resistant strains. Over 90% of women randomized to receive oteseconazole in two recently completed global Phase 3 clinical trials (VIOLET trials) did not experience a RVVC episode during these 48-week clinical studies. This observational study was designed to extend thes…

Essential role of hepcidin in host resistance to disseminated candidiasis.

Candida albicans is a leading cause of life-threatening invasive infection despite antifungal therapy. Patients with chronic liver disease are at increased risk of candidemia, but the mechanisms underlying this susceptibility are incompletely defined. One consequence of chronic liver disease is an attenuated ability to produce hepcidin and maintain organismal control of iron homeostasis. To address the biology underlying this critical clinical problem, we demonstrate the mechanistic link between hepcidin insufficiency and candida infection using genetic and inducible hepcidin knockout mice. He

A Retrospective Study of Invasive Candidiasis in a Tertiary Teaching Hospital.

Introduction Invasive candidiasis is a leading cause of fungal infections in hospitalized and critically ill patients, with high morbidity and mortality. There are numerous factors which may predispose to its development. In recent years, there has been a change in the etiological spectrum, and emerging resistance to antifungal drugs seen in some patients, further complicating management. Aims and objectives The aim of this study was to analyze the epidemiological and microbiological profile of invasive candidiasis in a tertiary teaching hospital, with a focus on species distribution, antifung…

Management of invasive candidiasis: A focus on rezafungin, ibrexafungerp, and fosmanogepix.

Management of invasive fungal infections is challenging with growing antifungal resistance. Broad antifungal use has resulted in greater intrinsic and acquired resistance among Candida spp. It is important for clinicians to recognize the relationship between host susceptibility, site of infection, Candida resistance profiles, specific drug pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, and the role of novel antifungal agents. This narrative review covers the role of rezafungin, ibrexafungerp, and fosmanogepix in the management of invasive candidiasis (IC). The PubMed Database, Embase, and ClinicalTria…

A Narrative Review of Invasive Candidiasis in the Intensive Care Unit.

Candida species is the most common cause of invasive fungal infection in the critically ill population admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Numerous risk factors for developing invasive candidiasis (IC) have been identified, and some, like the breach of protective barriers, abound within the ICU. Given that IC carries a significant mortality, morbidity, and healthcare cost burden, early diagnosis and treatment have become an essential topic of discussion. Several expert panels and task forces have been established to provide clear guidance on the management of IC. Unfortunately, IC remai…

[Clinical features and prognosis of hepatosplenic candidiasis in patients with hematopathy].

Hepatosplenic candidiasis (HSC) is a rare type of candidiasis that can occur in patients with hematologic malignancies, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. At present, there is still a lack of studies on HSC in patients with hematologic disorders. Based on The Chinese Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Invasive Fungal Disease in Patients with Hematological Disorders and Cancers (the 6th revision), We retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics and prognosis of patients with HSC treated in Peking University Institute of Hematology from 2008 to 2022. Finally, eighteen p…

Antifungal Plant Defensins as an Alternative Tool to Combat Candidiasis.

Currently, the spread of fungal infections is becoming an urgent problem. Fungi of the Candida genus are opportunistic microorganisms that cause superficial and life-threatening systemic candidiasis in immunocompromised patients. The list of antifungal drugs for the treatment of candidiasis is very limited, while the prevalence of resistant strains is growing rapidly. Therefore, the search for new antimycotics, including those exhibiting immunomodulatory properties, is of great importance. Plenty of natural compounds with antifungal activities may be extremely useful in solving this problem. T…

Invasive candidiasis in dogs: A case report and review of the literature.

Invasive candidiasis is characterized by the systemic dissemination of Candida spp. and colonization of multiple organs. We are reporting a case of invasive candidiasis in a 3.5-year-old female mixed-breed dog with a history of limb injury. After clinical evaluation and complementary examinations a sepsis diagnose was established. The patient remained hospitalized under antibiotic therapy, dying three days later. Necropsy revealed white, nodular (pyogranulomas), and multifocal areas on the liver, button ulcers in the stomach and intestines, and a random lung consolidation. Impression smears we…
