The first preliminary structure of a surface lipooligosaccharide from Haemophilus ducreyi has been determined. The major oligosaccharide was released by mild acid hydrolysis and analyzed by liquid secondary ion and tandem mass spectrometry. The antigenic reactivity of both native and chemically modified enterobacterial common antigen (ECA) with anti-ECA-tetanus toxoid (TT) conjugate serum was investigated. Activities of some enzymes associated with carbohydrate and lipid metabolism were determined in 48 human breast carcinomas and compared with those found in 35 nonmalignant breast tumours and also in 13 normal breast tissues. A phospholipase A(2) inhibitor has been purified p6om the serum of Notechis ater using DEAE-Sephacel chromatography. The inhibitor was found to be composed of two protein subunits (alpha and beta) that form the intact complex of approximately 110 kDa. The various disorders caused by heritable defects in complex carbohydrate catabolism comprise two groups: (A) The mucopolysaccharidoses, six main and several subtypes are described. (B) The mucolipidoses (oligosaccharidoses), at least nine types being recognized. Whilst most of these are now well defined by clinical and biochemical studies, much of the sequence of events from the intrinsic metabolic error to their clinical features remains obscure. Most are transmitted as autosomal recessive conditions, a mode of inheritance often, as with these disorders, associated with enzymic deficiencies.
