PAX 8 is a transcription factor that is essential for embryonic development of the kidney, Müllerian organs, and thyroid. It may also have a role in tumor development in these organs. Primary adenocarcinoma of the vulva is rare, and cloagocenic adenocarcinoma of the vulva is extremely rare. Here we report a vulvar tumor characterized by columnar cells with prominent brush border and the presence of goblet cells and endocrine cells, presenting the tubulovillous pattern and mucin histochemistry of enteric adenocarcinoma. Electron microscopy verified a colon-like pattern. We suggest that cloacogenic carcinoma of the vulva arises from embryonic tissue, normally present in the vulvar introital area. In our case, a wide local excision was sufficient for radical cure.

The clinical and pathologic features of germ cell tumors in 188 patients seen at the Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles from 1941 to 1986 are reviewed. There were 129 females and 59 males 19 years of age or younger. BACKGROUND: Octamer-4 (Oct4) is a well known regulator of self-renewal in embryonic stem cells; it has been detected in several human cancers and may play a critical role in carcinogenesis.
AIMS: To assess the expression of Oct4 in epithelial ovarian tumours.
