In a series of studies with endomyocardial biopsy, 7 adult cases with cardiac disease and eosinophilia were studied clinically and electro-microscopy. Degranulation of the eosinophils in the peripheral blood was observed ultrastructurally in 3 of the 4 cases studied. The clinical expression of the 7 patients were, restrictive cardiomyopathy in 2, dilated cardiomyopathy in 2 and sick sinus syndrome in 1 and others in 2. Endocardial thickening was observed in 5 cases, one of whom showed a marked cellular infiltration with macrophages, plasma cells, lymphocytes and mast cells. One other case show

BACKGROUND: Cardiomyopathy, an often irreversible form of heart muscle disease that is associated with a dismal outcome, is endemic in Africa. The primary objective of this review was to summarize the current state of knowledge on the epidemiology and etiology of cardiomyopathy in people living in Africa and to identify new avenues for research.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We searched MEDLINE (January 1, 1966, through February 12, 2005) and reference lists of articles for relevant references. Unlike other parts of the world in which cardiomyopathy is rare, dilated cardiomyopathy is a major cause of

Cardiomyopathies are a heterogeneous group of cardiac diseases for which diagnosis and treatment are not always simple. The diagnosis of cardiomyopathy, in particular the etiology, comes from an integration between symptoms and results collected by several instrumental exams. The brain storming for the diagnosis includes also the identification of the "red flags", i.e. the pathognomonic features for each etiology that can drive the choice of appropriate diagnostic tests and therapy. In this review, we provide a step by step approach in order to help cardiologists, not specifically dedicated to

UNLABELLED: Pediatric cardiomyopathies are rare diseases with an annual incidence of 1.1 to 1.5 per 100 000. Dilated and hypertrophic cardiomyopathies are the most common; restrictive, noncompaction, and mixed cardiomyopathies occur infrequently; and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy is rare. Pediatric cardiomyopathies can result from coronary artery abnormalities, tachyarrhythmias, exposure to infection or toxins, or secondary to other underlying disorders. Increasingly, the importance of genetic mutations in the pathogenesis of isolated or syndromic pediatric cardiomyopathies i

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cardiomyopathy is an important cause of heart failure and a major indication for heart transplantation in children. Unfortunately, there is a paucity of literature to guide the anesthesiologist who cares for these high-risk children. This review describes the cardiomyopathy phenotypes that occur in children and the factors that are associated with clinical outcomes and perioperative complications. Anesthesia considerations will be reviewed.
RECENT FINDINGS: During the past decade, there has been a dramatic increase in knowledge related to cardiomyopathy. New genotypes and p

Distinct examinations and resulting therapies are depending on the cardiomyopathy phenotype and the severity of the myocardial compromise. Specific treatment modalities for distinct cardiomyopathies, demand detailed diagnostic procedures in addition to the routine diagnostic workup. Quality analyses for causal treatment strategies of different cardiomyopathies are missing. Most diagnostic procedures are unable to detect the relevant pathophysiological changes that generally occur at the cellular and molecular level of myocardial tissue or individual cells. Therefore, often only additional biop

Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle. The most common cause of myocarditis is viral infection in industrialized countries. Myocarditis with left ventricular dysfunction is called inflammatory cardiomyopathy and is the major cause of dilated cardiomyopathy. The clinical picture is very diverse, most often the patient present with signs of heart failure, arrhythmic symptoms and chest pains. Despite significant advances in non-invasive diagnostics, particularly magnetic resonance imaging, endomyocardial biopsy remains the gold standard of myocarditis diagnosis. Myocarditis and infla

Goal: Contractile response and calcium handling are central to understanding cardiac function and physiology, yet existing methods of analysis to quantify these metrics are often time-consuming, prone to mistakes, or require specialized equipment/license. We developed BeatProfiler, a suite of cardiac analysis tools designed to quantify contractile function, calcium handling, and force generation for multiple in vitro cardiac models and apply downstream machine learning methods for deep phenotyping and classification. Methods: We first validate BeatProfiler's accuracy, robustness, and speed by

BACKGROUND: Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy 2I (LGMD2I) is caused by mutations in the fukutin-related protein gene FKRP, which is also involved in congenital muscular dystrophy (MDC1C).
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical, biological, radiological and mutational characteristics of LGMD2I patients with FKRP mutation.
METHODS: Eleven patients from nine families from the north of France were studied. Demographical data, muscular testing results, cardiac and respiratory examinations, muscle histological features and a genetic analysis of the FKRP gene for each patient are reported. Eight patients

OBJECTIVE: The commonest cause of breathlessness in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction which improves with its removal. However, in the absence of outflow tract obstruction, as in dilated cardiomyopathy, patients may be limited by similar symptoms, thus suggesting a potential common mechanism for the two conditions. We aimed to assess cardiac function at the time of symptoms in a group of unselected patients with HCM to identify other patterns of cardiac dysfunction which coincide with their breathlessness.
METHODS: We studied 37 HCM patient

BACKGROUND: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is hereditary and the commonest medical cause of sudden death in childhood and adolescence, which is the reason for recommending screening in children with an affected parent. A diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy implies lifestyle modifications, restrictions that may bring profound changes to the affected individual and impacts on the whole family.
OBJECTIVE: To describe parents' experiences of how the diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in their child affects daily life.
METHOD: Twelve parents with asymptomatic children diagnosed with hyper

Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is an infiltrative restrictive cardiomyopathy caused by the deposition of amyloid fibrils in the myocardium, presenting primarily as transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR) and immunoglobulin light chain cardiac amyloidosis (AL). ATTR is further classified into wild-type (ATTRwt) and hereditary (ATTRv) based on transthyretin gene mutation. The disease is increasingly recognized as a significant cause of heart failure. Advances in diagnostic modalities, including electrocardiography, echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, and technetium pyrophosphate sci

Endomyocardial fibrosis secondary to hyper-eosinophilic syndrome also known as Loeffler's Endocarditis is a rare cause of restrictive cardiomyopathy. If left untreated, it carries a very high morbidity and mortality rate. The case of a 20 years old girl, a known case of polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis since the age of 13 years was reported at Federal Government Polyclinic Hospital, Islamabad on 14th May 2022. She presented with an acute history of shortness of breath and cough for two weeks. Her initial echocardiogram showed suspicion of Loeffler's Endocarditis, which is attributed

Amyloidosis is a plasma cell dyscrasia that leads to the excessive production and deposition of mutant protein fragments in various organs. Cardiac amyloidosis is often implicated in two main subtypes: transthyretin (ATTR) and light chain (AL). While both subtypes increase the risk of restrictive cardiomyopathy, cardiogenic shock, and arrhythmias, poorer outcomes are seen in those with cardiac infiltration secondary to AL amyloidosis. Prognosis depends on the timing of diagnosis and the extent of the disease burden prior to recognition and treatment. The following case report describes a young

Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is the buildup and infiltration of amyloid plaque in cardiac muscle. An underdiagnosed form of restrictive cardiomyopathy, CA can rapidly progress into heart failure. CA is evaluated using a multimodality approach that includes echocardiography, cardiac magnetic imaging, and nuclear imaging. Echocardiography remains an essential first-line modality that raises suspicion for CA and establishes functional baselines. Cardiac magnetic imaging provides additional incremental value via high-resolution imaging, robust functional assessment, and superior tissue characterizatio

Cardiac abnormalities associated with hypereosinophilia represent rare diseases and occurs most commonly due to hypersensitivity or allergic reactions, other possible etiologies cover infections, malignancy, vasculitis or hypereosinophilic syndromes. Three stages of cardiac involvement are usually described. Initially, myocardial inflammation occurs, that can continue with a thrombotic stage and eventually progress to the last irreversible stage called endomyocardial fibrosis, which represents one of the acquired forms of restrictive cardiomyopathy. In most patients, increased levels of eosino

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked genetic disorder that causes progressive weakness and wasting of skeletal muscular and myocardium in boys due to mutation of dystrophin. The structural integrity of each individual skeletal and cardiac myocyte is significantly compromised upon physical stress due to the absence of dystrophin. The progressive destruction of systemic musculature and myocardium causes affected patients to develop multiple organ disabilities, including loss of ambulation, physical immobility, neuromuscular scoliosis, joint contracture, restrictive lung disease, obst

X-linked myotubular myopathy (XLMTM) is a rare neuromuscular condition caused by mutations in the MTM1 gene. Female carriers are believed to be usually asymptomatic; nevertheless, recent reports have displayed a wide a spectrum of clinical involvement in females suggesting that MTM1 mutations might be underestimated in this population. Here we report a 55-year-old woman manifesting with an abrupt respiratory decline, whose respiratory function tests revealed a severe restrictive ventilatory defect. The neurological examination identified mild proximal leg weakness and her cardiac evaluation sh

Protein-losing enteropathy has been associated with the Fontan operation, restrictive cardiomyopathy, constrictive pericarditis, tricuspid valvar stenosis and insufficiency, and superior caval venous obstruction. The mechanism of development of this complication of cardiac disease likely is multifactorial. We report here our experience with 3 patients with protein-losing enteropathy. Two had superior caval venous occlusion. The third patient had undergone an extracardiac Fontan operation, with stenosis of the extracardiac conduit placed to the right pulmonary artery. In all three cases, the co
