Fou rire prodromique heralding a left internal carotid artery occlusion.

BACKGROUND: Four rire prodromique, described as pathological laughter preceding the onset of an apoplectic attack, is a rare phenomenon. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 61-year-old man manifested pathological laughter before a sudden right hemiplegia. MRI showed a left lenticular and caudate nucleus infarct with involvement of the external capsule and prerolandic area. MRA revealed a left internal carotid and middle cerebral artery occlusion. CONCLUSIONS: The clinicoanatomic correlates of this phenomenon are discussed.

[Adult pneumococcal meningitis complicated by cerebral infarction: a case report].

We describe a 36-year-old man with pneumococcal meningitis who suddenly showed a left central type facial palsy and left hemiparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a low intensity area in the posterior limb and genu of the right internal capsule to caudate nucleus in T1-weighted images and a high intensity area in T2-weighted images. We surmised vasculitis as the cause of cerebral infarction, because steroid treatment was effective.

Stereotactic Gamma Knife radiosurgery for the treatment of dystonia.

A case of dystonia treated with Gamma Knife radiosurgery is reported. A 37-year-old female patient had a history of tuberculous meningitis at the age of 10 and subsequently developed a left hemidystonia. MRI showed an old infarction in the right caudate nucleus, globus pallidus and putamen. Stereotactic Gamma Knife radiosurgery was employed to make a lesion in the right posteroventral globus pallidus. Postoperatively, the patient's condition improved. However, homonymous hemianopsia developed postoperatively.

[Some problems on neuropathology of Huntington disease].

The most striking neuronal loss in the brains of Huntington disease (HD) occurs in the striatum, predominant in the caudate nucleus. However, pathogenesis of this disease is supposed to be mainly based on the process of "simple atrophy" in the whole brain neurons and their axons. Therefore, although the autopsied brains of HD are atrophic and their weight are light, histopathology based on the classical method shows few abnormal findings in the cerebrum. Against this fact, "numeric atrophy" of the neurons occurs in the striatum of chorea acanthocytosis.

Membranous lipodystrophy: MR imaging appearance of the brain.

Five patients with membranous lipodystrophy (lipomembranous polycystic osteodysplasia with progressive dementia) underwent magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the brain. T2-weighted MR images showed atrophied cerebral white matter with dilated ventricles; increased signal intensity of the white matter; and decreased signal intensity of the thalamus, putamen, caudate nucleus, and cerebral cortex. Although each single finding is not specific, the combination of the above MR findings when coupled with skeletal lesions strongly suggests this rare disease.

Posttraumatic segmental axial dystonia.

Isolated dystonia of trunk and neck muscles without involvement elsewhere has been termed segmental axial dystonia--a rare disorder. We report a 31-year-old man who developed marked dystonia of paraspinal muscles and progressive scoliosis 6 months after a closed head injury. Computed tomography (CT) disclosed three small areas of encephalomalacia, one involving the head of the caudate nucleus. Treatment with trihexyphenidyl resulted in significant improvement of the dystonia and scoliosis.

Automatic striatal volumetry allows for identification of patients with chorea-acanthocytosis at single subject level.

Chorea-acanthocytosis (ChAc) is a rare autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disease with erythrocyte membrane dysfunction, progressive hyperkinesia, and neuropsychological abnormalities. Neuropathologic and neuroimaging investigations demonstrate damage to the basal ganglia. Here, a novel automated technique of voxel-based magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analysis was applied to determine the volumes of caudate nucleus and putamen in nine patients with proven ChAc in comparison with 257 healthy controls. At individual subject level, ChAc patients and controls could be reliably discriminated b…

Hemibody tremor related to stroke.

BACKGROUND: Hemibody tremor is an uncommon manifestation of stroke. We describe a case investigated by both brain magnetic resonance imaging … . CONCLUSIONS: This case suggests that unilateral tremor may be related to a lacunar stroke in the caudate nucleus and may be accompanied by an increased glucose metabolism in the contralateral sensorimotor cortex.

Acquired capsular/striatal aphasia in childhood.

We studied a case of language loss caused by an acquired vascular lesion in the putamen, anterior limb of the internal capsule, and lateral aspect of the head of the caudate nucleus in a 7-year-old right-handed girl. Acute right-sided hemiplegia, mutism, oral apraxia, and disturbance in language comprehension but no dysarthria were present. During recovery, a nonfluent aphasia with anomia was evident. After six months, only mild hemiparesis and minor spelling difficulties persisted. We compared this patient with an 11-year-old right-handed girl with right-sided hemiparesis and dysarthria but n…

Caudate stimulation and substantia nigra activity in the rat.

1. The responses of spontaneously active single neurones in the substantia nigra and overlying mesencephalic reticular formation have been analysed during the electrical stimulation of the ipsilateral caudate nucleus. Experiments were performed in rats anaesthetized with urethane or pentobarbitone. All recordings were made extracellularly with multi-barrelled glass micropipettes which were also used to test neuronal responsiveness to electrophoretically administered substances. The micropipette tip position was marked and the distribution of neurones studied has been analysed. 2. Single shock …

Pharmacological effects of Raphanus caudatus in inflammation and hematopoitic system: an in vitro and in vivo investigation.

The pods of Radish are known as Raphanus caudatus that belongs to the family Brassicaceae. They are commonly known as Mungra or Sungra in Pakistan, while the common English name for this species is Rat-tailed radish. This variety of radish is unique and less tested for pharmacological as well as toxicological potential. In the current research, the ethanol extract of pods was assessed for anti-inflammatory potential in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore the effect of plant on hematological parameters was also investigated. For in vitro study, luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence method was used whil

Neural oscillations in the fronto-striatal network predict vocal output in bats.

The ability to vocalize is ubiquitous in vertebrates, but neural networks underlying vocal control remain poorly understood. Here, we performed simultaneous neuronal recordings in the frontal cortex and dorsal striatum (caudate nucleus, CN) during the production of echolocation pulses and communication calls in bats. This approach allowed us to assess the general aspects underlying vocal production in mammals and the unique evolutionary adaptations of bat echolocation. Our data indicate that before vocalization, a distinctive change in high-gamma and beta oscillations (50-80 Hz and 12-30 Hz, r…

Tinnitus modulation by deep brain stimulation in locus of caudate neurons (area LC).

Tinnitus is an auditory disorder characterized by perception of internally generated phantom auditory sensations without corresponding mechanical stimuli arising from the body or external environment. Current auditory based treatment approaches, sometimes in conjunction with nonauditory based strategies, such as Tinnitus Retraining Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, have been helpful in mitigating symptoms for the majority of patients. Yet there are over 1 million tinnitus sufferers who still endure troublesome chronic, continuous head noises that are debilitating and interfere with act
