Deformation characteristics of weakly cemented overburden in Western mining areas in China.

Understanding the deformation behavior of weakly cemented overburden in western coalfields is critical for assessing mining-induced instability and groundwater hazards. Taking the 23 - 2 coal seam of Yili No. 4 Mine as the research object, this study integrates FLAC3D numerical simulations with high-precision transient electromagnetic field monitoring data to quantify the influence of mining thickness and face advance on overburden responses. The actual mining thickness of the target coal seam is 9.5 ~ 10 m, and the mining depth ranges from 150 m to 1000 m. Results reveal a characteristic "pro

Skull base foramina provide a route for the exit of brain lymphatic vessels from the human skull.

PURPOSE: The brain lymphatic vessels (LV) drain fluids, metabolic waste, and immune cells. The abnormal accumulation of toxic substances causes neurodegenerative, cerebrovascular diseases, and brain tumors. Despite their intracranial importance, the precise extracranial exit routes of brain LVs remain poorly characterized. We evaluated the presence of LVs in the dural samples overlying the foramina/canals (superior orbital fissure, foramen rotundum, foramen ovale, Meckel's cave, internal acoustic meatus, foramen lacerum, jugular foramen, and hypoglossal canal) using immunohistochemistry. METH

Revisiting Härtel's technique for percutaneous transoval glycerol injection.

PURPOSE: Percutaneous transoval glycerol injection (GI) has been widely used since 1981 in the treatment of patients with trigeminal neuralgia. However, outcomes have been more variable than with other percutaneous treatments. Although most authors state that they use Härtel's technique, the variations are numerous-which may explain procedural problems and most of the poor results. The aim of the present imaging-based study, therefore, was to revisit Härtel's technique and identify optimal landmarks for guiding the needle from the cheek to Meckel's cave. METHODS: Eleven patients referred for

From Above and Below: The Microsurgical Anatomy of Endoscopic Endonasal and Transcranial Microsurgical Approaches to the Parasellar Region.

INTRODUCTION: The parasellar region is one of the most complex of the skull base. In this study, we review the anatomy and approaches to this region through a 360° perspective, correlating microsurgical and endoscopic anatomic nuances of this area. METHODS: An endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) and microsurgical dissections were performed. The parasellar anatomy is reviewed and common areas of tumor extensions are assessed. Surgical approaches are discussed based on the anatomic nuances of those regions. RESULTS: The cavernous sinus (CS) can be divided into 2 spaces: posterosuperior, above

[Presence of Loxosceles similis Moenkhaus, 1898 (Araneae, Sicariidae) in Serra da Bodoquena, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil].

The venom of Loxosceles spiders causes dermonecrotic lesion and induces complement-dependent intravascular haemolysis that characterizes a severe systemic effect. In Brazil, L. gaucho, L. intermedia and L. laeta, present in the anthropic environment, have been pointed out as the most important agents of the loxoscelism. Besides these species there are others that, by predominating in the natural environment, have not been evaluated regarding human health risk, as in the case of Loxosceles similis. The development of a research project in Bodoquena Range, for ecological observation and identifi

Two new species of the genus Bogidiella (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Bogidiellidae) from Japan.

Two new species of bogidiellid amphipods, Bogidiella isajii and B. painushima are described from an anchialine undersea cave in Minamidaito Island and freshwater flowing through a cave in Ishigaki Island, Ryukyu Islands. Bogidiella isajiisp. nov. differs from its congeners in the absence of an inner ramus on the pleopods, armature of uropods 1 and 2 rami, and shape of the telson. Bogidiella painushimasp. nov. is morphologically similar to B. aprutina and B. broodbakkeri, but differs from these two species in the shape of antennal sinus of the head, size of antenna 2 peduncular article 2 gland

[Multiple intracranial epidermoid cysts: Case report].

Epidermoid cyst is a benign and rare tumor, that evolves slowly. We describe the case of a 55 years-old woman, who came to our consultation for atypical trigeminal neuralgia of left V1 and V2 nerves. Brain MRI found two tumors: T1W hypointense with no appreciable enhancement after gadolinium injection and T2W and diffusion hyperintense. This last feature was in favour of an epidermoid cyst, but the multiplicity of cerebral lesions was definitely not in favor of such a diagnostic. They were located behind the right eye and in the left Meckel’s cave (trigeminal cave). The surgical strategy cons

Isolation of genetically diverse Marburg viruses from Egyptian fruit bats.

In July and September 2007, miners working in Kitaka Cave, Uganda, were diagnosed with Marburg hemorrhagic fever. The likely source of infection in the cave was Egyptian fruit bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus) based on detection of Marburg virus RNA in 31/611 (5.1%) bats, virus-specific antibody in bat sera, and isolation of genetically diverse virus from bat tissues. The virus isolates were collected nine months apart, demonstrating long-term virus circulation. The bat colony was estimated to be over 100,000 animals using mark and re-capture methods, predicting the presence of over 5,000 virus-inf

Critical evaluation of in situ analyses for the characterisation of red pigments in rock paintings: A case study from El Castillo, Spain.

Paint technology, namely paint preparation and application procedures, is an important aspect of painting traditions. With the expansion of archaeometric studies and in situ non-destructive analytical methods, a renewal of technological studies is being observed in rock art. In situ analyses have several limitations that are widely discussed in the literature, however. It is not yet clear whether they provide accurate information on paint technology, except under certain conditions. Here, we evaluated digital microscopic and pXRF in situ analyses for the characterisation of a large set of red

Resilient by nature: managed rearing does not erode physiochemical tolerances of an extremophile fish.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is self-limiting, has an unknown origin, and predominantly affects the lymph nodes. KFD with aseptic meningitis is rare and diagnostically challenging. This retrospective observational study aimed to elucidate the clinical features and treatment outcomes of KFD, particularly in cases with aseptic meningitis. METHODS: We conducted this retrospective study to describe KFD to determine the characteristics of the disease, with a particular focus on cases involving aseptic meningitis. RESULTS: Our study comprised 103 patients (33 men, 70

Late Quaternary nightjars (Aves: Caprimulgidae) from Western Cuba.

Nightjars (Aves: Caprimulgidae) are predominately nocturnal birds that are rare in the fossil record. Based on materials from the Upper Pleistocene and Holocene deposits of El Abrón Cave (Western Cuba), two species of nightjars have been identified: the likely extinct Siphonorhis daiquiri and the modern Chordeiles gundlachii. Materials on Siphonorhis daiquiri contribute notably to our knowledge of the very poorly studied clade of Siphonorhis poorwills, while the latter species is recorded at this locality for the first time. Representatives of the genus Siphonorhis are specialized for terrestr

Early presence of Homo sapiens in Southeast Asia by 86-68 kyr at Tam Pà Ling, Northern Laos.

The timing of the first arrival of Homo sapiens in East Asia from Africa and the degree to which they interbred with or replaced local archaic populations is controversial. Previous discoveries from Tam Pà Ling cave (Laos) identified H. sapiens in Southeast Asia by at least 46 kyr. We report on a recently discovered frontal bone (TPL 6) and tibial fragment (TPL 7) found in the deepest layers of TPL. Bayesian modeling of luminescence dating of sediments and U-series and combined U-series-ESR dating of mammalian teeth reveals a depositional sequence spanning ~86 kyr. TPL 6 confirms the presence

"Candidatus Borrelia ibitipoquensis," a Borrelia valaisiana-Related Genospecies Characterized from Ixodes paranaensis in Brazil.

Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bbsl) spirochetes include the agents of Lyme borreliosis in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, and merge their transmission cycles mainly with ticks of the Ixodes ricinus complex. Twenty genospecies compose Bbsl currently, and with the exception of Borrelia chilensis, and Borrelia garinii, all have been described only for North America, Europe, North Africa, and Asia. Here, we collected specimens of Ixodes paranaensis, a tick associated with swifts in a Brazilian natural park from the state of Minas Gerais, and performed a molecular characterization

Middle Fossa Approach With Anterior Petrosectomy for Resection of a Meningioma Mimicking a Trigeminal Schwannoma, a Step-by-Step Surgical and Anatomical Description: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

Selected upper cerebellopontine angle (CPA)/petroclival region lesions can be visualized and resected through a middle fossa approach with anterior petrosectomy. This approach is particularly well suited for tumors that extend from the CPA into Meckel's cave or the middle cranial fossa. We present the case of a 55-yr-old man who presented with sudden left-sided hearing loss, with complete recovery after medical treatment. MRI demonstrated a left 1.8 cm contrast-enhancing upper CPA lesion with extension into Meckel's cave most consistent with a trigeminal schwannoma. The patient initially opted

Appendiceal Duplication: A Comprehensive Review of Published Cases and Clinical Recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Duplex appendix is very rare (incidence 0.004%) but has clinical relevance given the frequency of appendicectomies performed. Failure to recognise duplication can result in failure of treatment and medico-legal consequences. A review of published cases was undertaken to identify factors that may help in managing this rare condition. METHODS: All English and non-English publications were identified in PubMed, Embase and Cochrane databases. Patient demographics, intraoperative findings, anatomical details and histopathology were analysed. RESULTS: A total of 141 cases were identifi

A potential benefit of albinism in Astyanax cavefish: downregulation of the oca2 gene increases tyrosine and catecholamine levels as an alternative to melanin synthesis.

Albinism, the loss of melanin pigmentation, has evolved in a diverse variety of cave animals but the responsible evolutionary mechanisms are unknown. In Astyanax mexicanus, which has a pigmented surface dwelling form (surface fish) and several albino cave-dwelling forms (cavefish), albinism is caused by loss of function mutations in the oca2 gene, which operates during the first step of the melanin synthesis pathway. In addition to albinism, cavefish have evolved differences in behavior, including feeding and sleep, which are under the control of the catecholamine system. The catecholamine and
