OBJECTIVE: To develop an antimicrobial silver zeolite glass ionomer cement (SZ-GIC) and determine its biocompatibility, physical, adhesive and antibacterial properties.
METHODS: Silver nitrate and sodium zeolite were used to synthesize silver zeolite (SZ). SZ-GICs were prepared by incorporating SZ into GIC at 5% (SZ-GIC5), 2% (SZ-GIC2), or 1% (SZ-GIC1) by weight, respectively. The SZ-GICs were characterized by evaluating surface morphology, topography and elemental composition. SZ-GICs' biocompatibility was assessed by evaluating cell cytotoxicity. Their physical properties were determined by

Augmenting the vascular supply to generate new tissues, a crucial aspect in regenerative medicine, has been challenging. Recently, our group showed that calcium phosphate can induce the formation of a functional neo-angiosome without the need for microsurgical arterial anastomosis. This was a preclinical proof of concept for biomaterial-induced luminal sprouting of large-diameter vessels. In this study, we investigated if sprouting was a general response to surgical injury or placement of an inorganic construct around the vessel. Cylindrical biocement scaffolds of differing chemistries were pl

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis in pediatric patients is rare. Osteomalacia and osteoporosis are known to develop in syndromic or neuromuscular scoliosis children. Spinal deformity surgery for pediatric patients with osteoporosis is challenging, associated with pedicle screw (PS) failure and compression fractures. Cement augmentation of PS is one several measures to prevent screw failure. It provides additional pull-out strength to the PS in the osteoporotic vertebra.
METHODS: In 2010-2020, an analysis of pediatric patients who had cement augmentation of PS with a minimum follow-up of 2 years was pe

Limited research has been published evaluating the failure of zirconia crowns with less retentive tooth preparations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of axial wall height (AWH) and cement type on the fracture load of cubic phase-containing zirconia crowns. Standardized crown preparations with an AWH of 0, 2, or 4 mm (n = 10) were made in 90 extracted human maxillary third molars. The preparations were scanned, and crown restorations were designed. Cubic phase-containing zirconia crowns were milled and cemented with a resin-modified glass ionomer cement, a self-adhesive res

Forefoot osteomyelitis can be an extremely challenging problem in orthopedic surgery. Unlike conventional methods, such as amputations, antibiotic impregnated cement space (ACS) was recently introduced and perceived as a substitute for amputation. The purpose of this study was to compare clinical features between diabetic and non-diabetic groups and to evaluate the efficacy of ACS in the treatment of forefoot osteomyelitis, by identifying the clinical characteristics of ACS. We inserted ACS into the forefoot osteomyelitis patients and regularly checked up on them, then analyzed the clinical fe

BACKGROUND: Vertebral cement augmentation procedures, as kyphoplasty (KP) or percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP), are commonly used for the management of pain of the vertebral column usually due to fractures related to traumatic injury, osteoporosis or metastatic lesion. It is a useful and safe technique with few complications. Among them, symptomatic pulmonary cement embolism (PCE) can happened, even rarely described in the literature, leading to severe cardio-respiratory manifestations depending on the location and size of the cement emboli.

OBJECTIVE: This case describes symptomatic pulmonary cement embolism as a rare postvertebroplasty complication and highlights its critical yet ill-defined management.
BACKGROUND: Pulmonary cement embolism (PCE) is a feared complication of vertebroplasty in the treatment of vertebral fractures. While the majority of PCEs are asymptomatic, symptomatic PCEs often present with chest pain, tachycardia, signs of severe respiratory distress, and death. Computer tomography angiogram (CTA) allows visualization of cement within the pulmonary vasculature. Despite the well-established risk of PCE, clinic

Hexavalent chromium in cement 5-8 mg/kg hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) was found in Honduran cement samples, which was slightly higher than in Swedish samples. Variable amounts of Cr(VI) (0.4 and 4.7 mg/kg) found in Swedish cement samples that were older than 1 year. There are still many countries that do not have a compulsory reduction of Cr(VI) in cement. Several measures can be employed to reduce risks related to Cr(VI) in cement.

Osteoid osteoma is a benign primary bone tumor of unknown etiology that occurs most commonly in males during adolescence and early adulthood. Osteoid osteoma affects the spine in 20% of cases, and may cause spinal deformity, stiffness, and pain that may sometimes be worst at night. We present a novel description of a partial laminectomy with cement augmentation after resection of an osteoid osteoma. A 22-year-old male with a past medical history of Hodgkin's lymphoma status post chemotherapy and radiation to the mediastinum, and right hip osteoblastoma treated with surgery and radiofrequency a

Periprosthetic joint infections continues to be a common complication in total joint arthroplasty, resulting in significant morbidity, mortality, and additional cost. Trabecular metal implants with an internal cemented interface may be customizable drug delivery devices with an ingrowth interface. Thirty-six acetabular implants were assembled in vitro, half with a trabecular metal shell and half without. The antibiotic loaded bone cement was prepared via three different mixing techniques and at two different mixing times. Mixing time had a significant effect on the total amount of gentamicin e
