Comparative morphofunctional analysis of axial skeleton excluding the skull of primates based on the anatomical, radiographic, and tomographic description of the black-striped capuchin (Sapajus libidinosus Spix, 1823).

Comparative anatomy the basis for studies of evolution, and radiographic and tomographic aspects, as auxiliary methods in the investigation of anatomical particularities, reinforce evolutionary research. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the vertebrae, sternum, and ribs of the capuchin monkey (Sapajus libidinosus) by means of anatomical dissection and radiographic and tomographic images. To this purpose, four cadavers were used in the anatomical analysis and five living animals for the imaging exams. The bones were described and compared with data from other primates species fou

Rugby injuries of the upper cervical spine. Case reports.

Fractures and dislocations of the upper cervical spine (atlas and axis) differ markedly from those of the lower cervical spine (C3 - C7) because of the unique anatomy and function of these two vertebrae. Case reports of 4 rugby players who sustained serious injuries of the upper cervical spine are presented. The role of the high tackle in causing these injuries is described and the association of head and upper cervical spinal trauma is emphasized. The radiological management of the player with suspected injury is outlined.

[Little known sequelae of sprains of the cervical spine].

After cervical sprain not only pain and neuropsychological disturbances may occur, but also the following sequelae: cervical dystonia, and torticollis, dizziness, hearing loss for low frequencies, dysphonia and globus. Except for dystonia the symptoms often respond to manipulation of a blocked articulation between occiput and atlas or axis and the third cervical vertebra.

[Arterial vascularization of the articular processes of the cervical spine].

Two cases of ischaemic necrosis of an articular process of cervical vertebrae, which have been surgically tested, have led the authors to study the blood supply of this part of the vertebral column by means of injections, dissections and Xray sections. At each level they find a double arterial supply: - the internal face of the articular process is supplied by the vertebral artery and the ascending cervical artery: - the external face is supplied by the vertebral artery, the ascending cervical artery and the deep cervical artery.

Craniofacial and cervical morphology related to sagittal spinal posture in children and adolescents.

Studies on the relationship between body posture and craniofacial parameters often focus on the cervical spine. Thus, less attention has been paid to the morphology of the vertebra C2 that serves as both a structural and functional link between the craniofacial area and the other part of the spine. The objective of this study was to assess the relation of craniofacial features to certain morphological and positional characteristics of the cervical vertebrae and the spine during growth. We determined body posture indices for 69 children and adolescents by means of a radiation-free method (raste…

Cervical spine synostosis: an anatomical study with emphasis on embryological and clinical aspects.

PURPOSE: The objectives were to study the anatomical features of fused vertebra in the cervical region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 363 cervical vertebras which were macroscopically observed for the fusion and their morphology was studied. RESULTS: Among our specimens, one fusion was observed between the C1 and C2 and the other was between C2 and C3. The mean anteroposterior diameter of normal atlas and axis were 42.1 +/- 0.9 mm and 46 +/- 0.5 mm respectively. The fused C1-C2 had 39 +/- 0.6 mm anteroposterior diameter. The mean lengths of anterior arch of normal atlas and body

Effects of 434 MHz microwave hyperthermia applied to the rat in the region of the cervical spinal cord.

Hyperthermia was applied in the region of the vertebral column between the cervical vertebrae 5 and thoracic 2, using a ring-shaped applicator operating at a microwave frequency of 434 MHz. This region was focally heated, including spinal cord, vertebrae, intervertebral discs and nerve roots. In all experiments temperature was measured at a 'reference' thermocouple probe which was placed against one of the cervical vertebrae 6, 7 or thoracic 1. Temperatures inside the vertebral canal were measured separately and proved to be below the 'reference' temperature: at 42 degrees, 43 degrees, 44 degr…

Bone loss of the superior adjacent vertebral body immediately posterior to the anterior flange of Bryan cervical disc.

BACKGROUND: No previous reports have mentioned bone loss of the superior adjacent vertebra immediately posterior to the anterior flange of Bryan cervical disc (Medtronic Sofamor Danek, Memphis, TN, USA), which plays a central role to prevent posterior migration of the device. The purpose of this study is to describe a new potential complication, bone loss immediately posterior to the anterior total disc replacement (TDR) flange on the superior adjacent vertebra following the Bryan cervical TDR and to discuss the possible mechanism. METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed 37 patients und

Cervical Paraspinal Muscle Morphometry and Mechanical Failure: A Propensity-Matched Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Hardware-related complications are rare but important issues after posterior cervical fusion. Current risk stratification relies on bone quality parameters, but other variables may also contribute to mechanical complications. In lumbar spine surgery, paraspinal muscle morphometry has emerged as a predictor of mechanical failure, though cervical-specific evidence is limited. This study evaluates preoperative cervical paraspinal muscle morphometry in predicting mechanical failure following posterior cervical fusion. METHODS: This retrospective propensity score-matched study included

Craniocervical instability treated by contoured loop fixation.

Rigid posterior fixation of the skull to the third, fourth and fifth cervical vertebrae was achieved in three patients who, as a result of operation, had gross instability of the craniocervical junction. An anatomically contoured steel loop was secured to the occiput via small burr holes and to the vertebrae by sublaminar wiring. This technique has the advantage over bone grafting, either alone or with cement, in that it affords rigid stabilisation, allows early mobilisation and may contribute to eventual bony fusion.

A case of large scalenus minimus muscle.

During the dissection of an 80-year-old, white, male cadaver, a large scalenus minimus muscle was detected on the right side. Scalenus minimus muscle, a fiber bundle which strengthens the suprapleural membrane, arises from the anterior tubercle of the transverse process of the 7th cervical vertebra, and inserts to the inner border of the first rib and cupula pleura. In the present case, the scalenus minimus muscle on the suprapleural membrane was large on the right side. Its origin was on the anterior tubercle of the transverse process of the 7th cervical vertebra, and the muscle was located b

Bilateral vertebral arteries entering the C4 foramen transversarium with the left vertebral artery originating from the aortic arch.

Vertebral arteries (VAs) serve as major blood vessels to the central nervous system. VAs typically arise from the subclavian arteries and ascend separately within the transverse foramina of the cervical vertebrae (C6-C1) before entering the skull at the foramen magnum and joining at the base of the pons to form the basilar artery of the vertebrobasilar circulation. Therefore, variations in the origin and anatomic course of the VAs have implications for invasive medical procedures involving the superior thoracic/cervical regions or the cervical vertebrae. The current case report describes varia…

Klippel-Feil Syndrome: Pathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Management.

Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS), or congenital fusion of the cervical vertebrae, has been thought to be an extremely rare diagnosis. However, recent literature suggests an increased prevalence, with a high proportion of asymptomatic individuals. Occurring as a sporadic mutation or associated with several genes, the pathogenesis involves failure of cervical somite segmentation and differentiation during embryogenesis. Most commonly, the C2-C3 and C5-C6 levels are involved. KFS is associated with other orthopaedic conditions including Sprengel deformity, congenital scoliosis, and cervical spine abno…

Embryonic remnants of intercentra and cervical ribs in turtles.

A broad sample of extant turtles possesses a series of paired bones in the neck that are situated between the cervical vertebrae. These paired bones were originally proposed to be cervical rib remnants, but have more recently been interpreted as vestiges of intercentra. Here, we document, for the first time, the neck development of a pleurodire turtle, Emydura subglobosa, and identify blastematous structures, which partially recapitulate the ribs and intercentra of the plesiomorphic tetrapod condition. We identify blastematous "bridges" between intercentra and the corresponding ribs, which we …

Congenital absence of the C1 vertebral arch.

Congenital absence of part of the anterior arch of the atlas, a rare disorder, was observed in two patients. The defect in the C1 cervical vertebrae, caused by congenital nonfusion of the arch of C1, may be confused with a cervical spinal fracture on plain radiographs of the cervical spine. The diagnosis is established by characteristic radiological changes, especially in the CT scan and bone scan. Because congenital anomalies of the cervical spine may predispose to instability of the cervical spine and can be confused with traumatic lesions, thorough evaluation is warranted. Treatment should …
