INTRODUCTION: Methamphetamine associated cardiomyopathy (MAC) and peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) are both rare obstetric conditions. Literature regarding methamphetamine associated cardiomyopathy in the obstetric population is limited, and it can be difficult to make the distinction between the two given the similarities in clinical presentation. However similar, there are significant distinctions in the pathophysiology of these two that can help clinicians with the management process.
CLINICAL FINDINGS AND OUTCOMES: This case involves a 35-year-old Hispanic G6P5005 at 37 weeks gestation pr

INTRODUCTION: Damage to the pelvic floor during vaginal childbirth is common, and may take the form of levator avulsion or irreversible overdistension of the levator hiatus (microtrauma). Such trauma is a major risk factor for pelvic organ prolapse later in life. In this study we aimed to identify intrapartum risk factors for levator trauma.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of data obtained in two perinatal studies on primiparous women. Between 2005 and 2014, 1148 women carrying an uncomplicated singleton pregnancy in the late third trimester were seen for 4D pelvic floo

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to quantitate and compare the amount of cytokines released from human fetal membranes in response to treatment with bacterial lipopolysaccharide and to compare this with amniotic fluid levels.
STUDY DESIGN: Amniochorionic membranes were collected from women undergoing elective repeat cesarean section and showing no signs of infection- or pregnancy-related complications. Membranes were maintained in an organ explant system and stimulated with bacterial lipopolysaccharide for 24 hours. Media samples were collected and stored at -20 degrees C until cytokine le

We report on three infants with hand anomalies and congenital hypopituitarism. In two of the cases, a hypothalamic tumor was found; the third infant died without postmortem brain studies. Family history in the first case suggested possible familial recurrence; the mother's sister had died at 17 hr of age with polydactyly, microglossia, and flat nasal bridge (no autopsy done). Our second case was born by cesarean section after a pregnancy complicated by extremely low maternal estriols. At birth, hypopituitarism was diagnosed, a cranial CT scan was read as normal, and hormonal replacement was be

BACKGROUND: True primary cervical pregnancies are rare. Although these can cause massive hemorrhage, most of these abort during the first trimester without having been diagnosed. However, cervico-isthmic and cervico-isthmic corporeal pregnancies are more likely to persist to an advanced gestation in the second and third trimester and cause profuse bleeding with attempted removal of the placenta.
CASE PRESENTATION: A case of cervico-isthmic corporeal pregnancy at term with near exsanguinating hemorrhage is reported. A 35-year-old Sri Lankan woman presented for prenatal care with the complaint

INTRODUCTION: Uterovesical fistulas belong to the least common types of urogenital fistulas. Although uncommon, they cannot be considered a rarity in view of about 800 published cases in the literature. They are most frequently caused by repeated caesarean sections, which are increasing, and their complications can be expected to increase as well.
CASE REPORT: During the second caesarean section of a 31-year-old woman, the urinary bladder was opened and subsequently closed by a urologic surgeon. In the following weeks and months, the patient suffers from urinary incontinence in response to bl

Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is a rare condition only recently recognized. We present a case describing successful regional analgesia in a parturient with NF2 after thorough imaging revealed no tumors within the epidural space. The presence of tumors within the spinal cord and nerve roots and their potential enlargement during pregnancy make routine neuraxial anesthesia hazardous in patients with NF2. Lumbosacral imaging before performing regional anesthesia is recommended.

BACKGROUND: Foley catheterization is a simple procedure routinely performed during many obstetric and gynecologic procedures. Failure to adequately drain the bladder with catheter insertion should prompt further investigation to minimize morbidity to the patient.
CASE: After repeated attempts to place a Foley catheter during a cesarean section, the urinary bladder did not drain. Postoperatively, it was found that the catheter was positioned inside the left ureter, and cystoscopy confirmed an ectopic ureter inserting into the proximal urethra.
CONCLUSIONS: This case presents an unusual cause

Sixty patients with previous stillbirths were given active antepartum, intrapartum and early postnatal care. A majority (75%) had a history of repeated stillbirths, and responsible pathology was detected in 55% of the cases. In the present pregnancy, 90% of the patients suffered complications, each of which was diagnosed and treated. Most of the group were hospitalized. Tests for serial urinary estrogens were done for 75% of the women. Other special assessments of maturity with amniotic fluid, oxytocin challenges and fetal monitoring were carried out in selected cases. After confirming maturit

OBJECTIVE: Although the first report on cesarean myomectomy (CM) was a century ago, the management of a myomectomy during a cesarean section (CS) remains controversial. The objective of this study is to provide the latest data on this topic regarding the techniques and complications of CM.
METHODS: The authors consulted the most important scientific databases investigating the indications and contraindications for CM, the operational techniques, benefits and complications.
RESULTS: CM provides the benefits of two surgeries in one laparotomy, avoiding the risks of repeated anesthesia and rela

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were (1) to determine the success rate of induction of labor (IOL) in women with a prior cesarean section (CS) and (2) to compare the perinatal outcome of a trial of labor (TOL) in women with one prior CS who had an IOL, spontaneous onset of labor, or an elective repeated CS (ERCS).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study population was divided into three groups: women who had (1) ERCS (n = 1916), (2) spontaneous TOL (n = 4263), and (3) IOL (n = 1576).
RESULTS: (1) The rate of IOL in the study cohort was 20.3%; of these, 67.4% had a successful vaginal birth after

The diagnosis of premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is devastating in women of reproductive age because of the small chance of spontaneous pregnancy. Here, we report a very rare case with POI and repeated failure of in vitro fertilization (IVF) where the final result was natural fertilization following guidance to have sexual intercourse during menstruation as ovulation was monitored. Estradiol valerate was used to increase the thickness of the endometrium and stop the menstrual bleeding. There was a serum level of 208.44 IU/L of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) 14 days after the ovulatio

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine whether trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC) is associated with increased risk of adverse outcomes for small-for-gestational-age (SGA) neonates.
METHODS: This secondary analysis of a multicenter prospective observational study evaluated SGA neonates born to women with a single prior cesarean delivery. Nonanomalous, singleton pregnancies delivered at 24-41 weeks were included. The primary exposure was whether women underwent planned cesarean versus attempted TOLAC. Log-linear regression models were developed to characterize the relations

OBJECTIVE: To determine the success rate of trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC) in rural India.
METHODS: The present prospective observational study enrolled pregnant women attending Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Kangra, India, in 2013. Eligible women had a previous low-segment cesarean delivery and had a singleton pregnancy with cephalic presentation. Women in labor were managed as per the institutional protocol.
RESULTS: In total, 482 women were included. TOLAC led to a vaginal delivery in 383 (79.6%) women. Overall, 2 (0.4%) women had scar rupture, and 4 (0.8%) had scar

We report the anesthetic management of two cases with placenta percreta that caused massive hemorrhage during cesarean section. These pregnant women, with a past history of cesarean section underwent elective operation after being diagnosed with total placenta previa and suspected adhesion of the placenta. The placenta percreta became evident after laparotomy and the patients underwent total hysterectomy after infant expulsion. They went into serious hemorrhagic shock, and recovered after the application of intensive cardiovascular support and blood transfusion. In recent years, the incidence
