A 51-year-old woman with a medical history of poorly controlled type 1 diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism, and tobacco abuse was admitted to the hospital with persistent nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, dry cough, rhinorrhea, and sore throat. She denied fevers, chills, rigors, shortness of breath, hemoptysis, nasal congestion, postnasal drip, and facial pain. She denied any sick contacts, and there was no recent travel outside of Chicago.

Neonatal aortic thrombus is a rare and critical condition that can present mimicking severe coarctation of the aorta or interrupted aortic arch. Transcatheter thrombectomy for this lesion has not been well described. We report a premature neonate with an occlusive proximal descending aorta thrombus, who underwent transcatheter mechanical thrombectomy using an Amplatzer Piccolo PDA occluder (Abbott, North Chicago, IL, USA). The procedure was successful with no subsequent distal thromboembolic events.

Blastomyces species (spp) can cause clinical disease affecting nearly every organ system, including the skeletal system. However, isolated joint involvement without concurrent osteomyelitis is rare, especially in children. We present a pediatric case from a tertiary care center in urban Chicago of disseminated blastomycosis caused by Blastomyces dermatitidis presenting as oligoarthritis (in the absence of osteomyelitis), pneumonia, and skin involvement, with clinical improvement on IV amphotericin and oral azole treatment.

The menstrual histories of 218 patients exposed in utero to diethylstilbestrol (DES) were compared with those of 158 control subjects. No significant differences were revealed in the complaint of menstrual irregularities at either the initial or follow-up examination. Age at menarche was the same in both groups, and was the same as found in the United States as a whole. These findings differ from the report of a controlled trial in Chicago which suggests that there is a specific pattern of oligomenorrhea associated with DES exposure.
