Children's Uncertain Responses when Testifying about Alleged Sexual Abuse in Scottish Courts.

This study examined the uncertain responses of 56 alleged sexual abuse victims, aged 5-17 years, testifying in Scottish criminal court trials. Don't know/remember ground rules were explained to 38% of the children and each child reported uncertainty in response to 15% of the questions on average. Uncertain responding was associated with expressions of resistance and confusion, questioning context (proportionally more regarding substantive than non-substantive issues), question content (least to disclosure-focused questions), utterance type (more to directives, particularly those posed by defen

Family Group Conferences as an alternative to Initial Child Protection Conferences for families on the Child Protection pathway: Synopsis.

BACKGROUND: When children are at risk of significant harm due to abuse or neglect, local authority children's services in the United Kingdom intervene to protect them and support families. This usually involves an initial child protection conference, a multiagency meeting that includes parents but rarely children or extended family. Families often experience initial child protection conferences as shaming and exclusionary, with limited focus on building sustainable plans. Family Group Conferences are a strengths-based, family-led forum used widely in children's social care. Safeguarding Family

Universal Pre-Kindergarten for Child Maltreatment Prevention.

IMPORTANCE: Universal pre-kindergarten (UPK) programs are expanding across the US. Given the detrimental consequences of child maltreatment on children's health and well-being, it is important to assess whether high-quality, full-time UPK programs can function as a population-level child maltreatment prevention strategy. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between provision of a full-time UPK program and child protective services (CPS) investigation rates by leveraging the implementation of New York City's Pre-K for All program. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study…

Verified Human Trafficking Allegations Among Single and Dual System-Involved Children: Predicting Initial and Repeat Victimization.

There is a dearth of research examining repeat human trafficking victimization among children involved with the child welfare system (i.e., single system involvement) and children involved with both the child welfare and juvenile justice systems (i.e., dual system involvement). This study uses longitudinal statewide linked administrative data from the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) and Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) to investigate both initial and subsequent verified human trafficking allegations among single and dual system-involved children. We conducted logi

End-of-life medical decision-making for children in custody: A collaborative, multi-stakeholder practical approach.

BACKGROUND: Parents have a constitutionally-protected, fundamental right to make decisions concerning the health and well-being of their children, afforded by the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. However, parental rights are not absolute, and may be curtailed after a finding of parental "unfitness" including perpetration of egregious child abuse/neglect. Court intervention may be necessary to assert "parens patriae" authority to protect a child's well-being. Disagreements over medical care for a child (particularly when parent maltreatment resulted in life-altering clinical cond

The impact of COVID-19 on Canadian child maltreatment workers.

As cases of child maltreatment become an increasing concern during the COVID-19 pandemic, the perspectives of those charged with protecting and supporting children and families is an important area of inquiry. We sought to examine the experiences of child maltreatment workers during the first wave of the pandemic (i.e., May-July 2020). We specifically aimed to examine child maltreatment experiences related to the following: (1) their work practices during the pandemic, (2) their perceived safety during the pandemic, and (3) their perceptions on the safety of the children and families with whom

Determinants of vertical transmission of HIV infection in Kilifi County, Kenya: a case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: mother-to-child transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) remains a significant contributor to pediatric HIV infections in Kenya despite expanded prevention services. Persistent gaps along the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) cascade continue to undermine elimination efforts. METHODS: we conducted a retrospective, unmatched case-control study using routinely collected PMTCT data from selected health facilities in Kilifi County, Kenya. The cases were HIV-positive mothers whose HIV-exposed infants tested HIV-positive by deoxyribonucleic acid polymerase c

Concerns about child maltreatment in hospitalized children.

This study examined factors associated with clinicians' concerns about abuse and neglect and reporting hospitalized children to Child Protective Services (CPS). Data came from a cross-sectional chart review from a random sample of pediatric hospitalizations 1988-1990 in three cities for five condition groups (n = 5,446), and included evidence of clinicians' concerns about physical abuse or neglect and reports to CPS, family income, ethnicity, family structure, child's age, and illness severity at admission. Concerns about abuse were noted in 2.5% of the total sample, concerns about neglect in …

Scaling Up Housing Services Within the Child Welfare System: Policy Insights From Simulation Modeling.

OBJECTIVES: Housing insecurity and homelessness contribute to risk of maltreatment among one in five of the nearly 3.5 million children annually investigated for maltreatment in the United States. The Family Unification Program (FUP)-a federal initiative-connects inadequately housed families involved in child welfare with long-term rental subsidies to avoid foster placement. However, FUP remains understudied and underutilized with funding levels that serve only a fraction of eligible households. The present study uses system dynamics modeling to inform decision-making by testing policies for s

Assessing and Improving Access to Health and Social Care Services for Children Rendered Vulnerable by Abuse: Protocol for a Cross-Sectoral Longitudinal, Mixed Methods, Multi-Country Study Using Nationwide Data in Europe.

Child maltreatment (CM) is a widespread and underreported public health concern with long-term health and wellbeing outcomes. In Europe, access to timely, effective support remains limited. Inadequate responses exacerbate long-term outcomes and influence life course trajectories, with substantial societal and economic costs. The EU-funded SERENA project aims to improve access to health and social care (HSC) services for individuals who experience CM throughout Europe by enhancing detection and interventions, limiting consequences, and reducing societal burdens. SERENA takes an early life cours

Uncomfortable yet necessary: The impact of PPE on communication in emergency medicine.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of pre-hospital emergency services is heavily dependent on the effective communication of care providers. This effective communication occurs between providers as part of a team and also among providers interacting with family members and patients. The COVID-19 pandemic introduced a number of communication challenges to emergency care, which are primarily linked to the increased use of personal protective equipment (PPE). OBJECTIVE: We sought to analyze the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on emergency medical service (EMS) workers and pre-hospital care delivery. MET
