BACKGROUND: Obesity in the United States disproportionately affects children with disabilities, yet little is known about how their obesity rates change over time or differ across disability subgroups.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined changes in obesity rates in two nationally representative cohorts of children from kindergarten to grade five. Obesity rates were further disaggregated for four less examined disability subgroups: speech or language impairment (SLI), specific learning disability (SLD), intellectual disability (ID), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
METHODS: Data from the Early …

PURPOSE: Identifying subtypes within autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has often been attempted to better understand the significant heterogeneity within the spectrum. Profiles of cognitive functioning have frequently been investigated as possible subtype definitions, but most studies have relied on relatively small sample sizes and higher-functioning samples, and few have used advanced statistical techniques to obtain estimates of underlying profiles of IQ in ASD. The purpose of this study was to use latent profile analysis to identify possible subgroups of children with ASD and other neurodevel

Children with disabilities and chronic diseases experience intersecting health, developmental, psychosocial, educational, environmental, and family challenges, but their clinical trajectories and service needs are not interchangeable. This Guest Editorial accompanies the article collection "Children with Disabilities and Chronic Diseases: Perspectives, Challenges, and Opportunities" and provides an integrated thematic synthesis of its six empirical articles available on 29 May 2026, supplemented by contextual pediatric and WHO sources. We organize this heterogeneous evidence thematically rathe…

BACKGROUND: Families of children with learning disabilities often face multidimensional challenges that affect their economic stability, psychological well-being, and social functioning, yet limited empirical evidence exists on how these burdens vary across socioeconomic and educational contexts in developing settings. This study aimed to examine the level, prevalence, and determinants of family burden among mothers of children with learning disabilities, and to assess differences based on child disability severity, maternal education, and economic status.
METHODS: A quantitative cross-sectio

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Emotional and behavioural problems (EBPs) are the two main forms of mental health problems that hinder the social interactions, learning and daily living of children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities (ID). Studies have shown that sufficient moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is associated with mental health outcomes among children and adolescents with typically developing (TD). However, these associations have not been fully studied in children and adolescent with ID, especially in samples from China. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the as

Children and youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) face a high risk of victimization (including child abuse, neglect, bullying), yet prevention strategies for this population remain underrepresented and under-evaluated. This scoping review analyzes ten community-based victimization prevention programs for youth with IDD (ages 10-25) across North America, the Middle East, Europe, and Australia. Programs varied in structure, content, and teaching strategies, with all delivered over multiple sessions and most including evaluations of learning outcomes or implementation qual

BACKGROUND: Ventricular assist devices (VADs) can be associated with high rates of neurologic complications. This study investigated whether children with VADs continue to exhibit psychomotor impairment after heart transplantation (HTx).
METHODS: The United Network for Organ Sharing was queried for children who underwent VAD implantation and HTx (2008-2024). Cognitive or motor impairment was assessed using a 4-point Likert scale at the HTx center. Cognitive or motor impairments were defined as psychomotor impairments and were analyzed before and after HTx.
RESULTS: Of 1417 children bridged t

PURPOSE: Anterior drooling is a common comorbidity in children and young people (CYP) with neurodevelopmental disabilities. This study aimed to assess the social and emotional impact of drooling in CYP with a developmental age (DA) of 6 years and older, in whom this impact may differ from those with a lower DA due to their developing sense of self and awareness of their position within social groups.
METHODS: Questionnaire data collected for routine clinical care were used to assess parental perceptions of the impact of drooling on (1) social interaction; (2) satisfaction with social interact

The study investigated the impact of motor dual-task training on gait and mobility in children with intellectual disabilities. Performance was assessed using the Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT) and the 10-Meter Walking Test (TMWT) before and after an 8-week training period, with participants divided into a Trained Group (n=12) and a Control Group (n=14). Results indicated that, across both groups and regardless of session, TUGT and TMWT scores were significantly higher (p < 0.001) in the motor dual-task condition compared to the single-task condition. Post-training, TUGT scores significantly decre

Mothers of children with chronic conditions or disabilities have benefited from mindfulness programs, yet culturally relevant mindfulness programs for Spanish-speaking mothers are lacking. We aimed to explore how this population experienced a peer-led mindfulness program to inform adaptations. Sixteen mothers attended a 6-week program and completed semi-structured interviews. Using a realist evaluation framework, we explored relationships between participants' context, the program's mechanisms and outcomes. Our thematic analysis found that four contextual factors-faith, self-concept as a woman

There has been incremental progress in moving BCI out of the laboratory environment and into the homes of those who would benefit most, especially children living with severe physical disabilities. Practical issues, such as available computational resources and long calibration times, have slowed down the adoption of such systems. To develop an efficient and scalable machine learning framework consistent with early approaches that facilitate at-home BCI use, this study provides valuable insights into measuring the behavioral characteristics of a Raspberry Pi 4 (RPi4) during the operation and e
