The photocatalytic oxidation of high levels of volatile chlorinated organic compounds in gas phase has been studied using a specially designed photoreactor. The influence of light intensity, initial water vapour concentration, temperature, inlet contaminant concentration and flow rate on destruction efficiency has been investigated. The performance of the titanium catalyst was strongly affected by the presence of water in the air stream. Experiments have been most successfully conducted at room temperature, low initial contaminant concentrations, low flow rates and high light intensities. Seve

The effects of 11 chlorinated hydrocarbons on toxicological parameters and lipid peroxidation were examined in cultured rat hepatocytes. The cytotoxicity was evaluated by measuring the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) released and the protein amount in cells attached to culture dishes. Phosphatidylcholine hydroperoxide (PCOOH) and phosphatidylethanolamine hydroperoxide (PEOOH) levels were determined by HPLC with chemiluminescence detection (CL-HPLC). Severe cytotoxicity was observed under the presence of the carbon tetrachloride, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, tetrachloroethylene and 1,3-dichloropropene in

The anaerobic metabolism of chlorinated benzenes and toluenes was evaluated in soil slurry microcosms under methanogenic conditions. A mixtu … CT-->toluene. Among DCTs tested, 2,4-DCT and 3,4-DCT were dechlorinated via the removal of o- and m-chlorine, respectively, to 4-CT and subsequently to toluene via p-chlorine removal. Likewise, 2,5-DCT was dechlorinated via 2-CT to toluene. Evidently, microorganisms capable of removing o-, m-, and p-chlorines are present in the soil system, as reflected by …

Reports in the literature concerning the acute neurobehavioral effects of trichloroethylene (TCE) and trichloroethane (TCA) conflict as to whether or not cognitive deficits ensue. Our study of two patients acutely exposed to low concentrations of TCE suggests that (a) acute, low-dose exposures are sufficient to produce the mild to moderate impairments in psychomotor speed, attention and memory also reported after chronic exposures; (b) these memory impairments may be characterized by storage and/or retrieval difficulties; (c) the neural damage produced by TCE exposure is likely to be diffuse,

Chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons such as trichloroethylene and trichloroethane cause acute and chronic cardiotoxicities via mechanisms that are still obscure. Some of these toxic effects may result from free-radical-induced membrane damage to the vascular tissues. The pro-oxidant effects of carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, 1,2-dichloroethane, and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene were assessed in cultured arterial endothelial and aortic smooth muscle cells. Exposure of the cells to the above chemicals alone did not increase the formation of thiobarbiturate reactive pr

The aim was to determine if isolated suspended hepatocytes could differentiate between the effects of four chlorinated hydrocarbons that are hepatotoxic in vivo and four that are not. Membrane integrity was assessed by measuring alanine aminotransferase (ALT) release after 30- to 180-min incubations in vitro. From the results, the chlorinated hydrocarbons fell into three groups: tetrachloroethylene and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane were the most potent cytotoxicants; CCl4, 1,1,2-trichloroethane, and trichloroethylene exhibited intermediate cytotoxicity; and low cytotoxicity was observed with CHCl3

The major initial metabolites of the chlorinated ethylenes in hepatocyte suspensions isolated from phenobarbital treated rats were as follows (rates of metabolite production in nmol/10(6) cells/min are given in brackets): vinylidene chloride, dichloroacetic acid (0.015); cis-1,2-dichloroethylene, 2,2-dichloroethanol (0.24); trans-1,2-dichloroethylene, dichloroacetic acid (0.005); trichloroethylene, chloral hydrate (2.7); tetrachloroethylene, trichloroacetic acid (0.08). Comparison of the metabolism of the chlorinated ethylenes by isolated hepatocyte suspensions and hepatic microsomes indicates

In concentrates of water produced in a laboratory simulation of a drinking water treatment process, direct-acting, nonvolatile mutagens were readily detected by means of the Ames Salmonella test. The mutagens were shown to be produced by the chlorination process. Treatment of the water with chloramine resulted in less mutagenic activity than treatment with free chlorine. Dechlorination of drinking water with sulfite sharply reduced the mutagenic activity. Treatment with sulfur dioxide is proposed as an effective, inexpensive method of reducing the direct-acting mutagenic activity of drinking w…

Toxicology and carcinogenesis studies of chlorinated paraffins (C23, 43% chlorine), an extreme-pressure lubricant and flame retardant, were conducted by administering the chemical in corn oil by gavage to groups of 50 F344/N rats and 50 B6C3F1 mice of each sex, 5 days per week for 103 weeks. Additional groups of 10 rats per sex and dose were examined at 6 and at 12 months. Male rats received doses of 0, 1,875, or 3,750 mg/kg body weight; female rats were given 0, 100, 300, or 900 mg/kg. Male and female mice received 0, 2,500, or 5,000 mg/kg. Doses selected for the 2-year studies were based on …

Metal single-atom catalysts (SACs) with near-100% metal utilization and flexible coordination environments are promising candidates for electrochemical chlorine evolution reaction (CER) to produce valuable Cl2-a key raw material for plastics manufacturing, water treatment, and pharmaceuticals. However, it remains challenging to assess specific coordination environments for structure-activity relationships and monitor their dynamic structural evolution under catalytic reaction conditions. Herein, operando X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) revealed distinct dynamic structural evolution on t…

Both hydroxyl radical (•OH) and chlorine radical (Cl•) are recognized as significant reactive species in aquatic and atmospheric sciences. While •OH can be readily detected with the conventional spin trap, 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO), Cl• is often considered difficult to detect by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique and has therefore been largely underexploited. In this work, we clarify the complicated reactions of Cl• with DMPO, which pose challenges for the direct detection of Cl•. To overcome this limitation, we take advantage of the differences in the products forme…

Reactive chlorine species (RCS) are alternatives to reactive oxygen species (ROS) in tumor therapeutics. Unlike ROS, whose generation is limited by hypoxic conditions or insufficient H2O2 levels in the tumor, RCS can be generated through the electrochemical oxidation of abundant Cl- present in body fluids. However, traditional electrochemical therapy modalities have shown suboptimal outcomes. Herein, a flexible anodic electrode is fabricated by growing a carbon nanowire network (C-NWN) onto carbon cloth (CC). Attributing to its excellent hydrophilicity, high specific surface area, and electroc…
