In thirty cases of synovial osteochondromatosis studied clinically and pathologically, the process appeared to follow a temporal sequence characterized by three recognizable phases (1) active intrasynovial disease only, with no loose bodies; (2) transitional lesions with both active intrasynovial proliferation and free loose bodies; and (3) multiple free osteochondral bodies with no demonstrable intrasynovial disease. If gross examination at the time of surgery shows that the disease is in the third phase, it would appear that synovectomy may not be necessary. However, extrasynovial intra-arti…

BACKGROUND: Ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumour (ECT) is a rare, benign neoplasm of uncertain histogenesis, which appears to exclusively involve the oral cavity, particularly the tongue.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 27-year-old woman with a 0.7 cm tumoral lesion of 3 months' duration on the dorsum of the tongue. Histologically, it comprised well-circumscribed, unencapsulated lobular proliferations of fusiform and polygonal cells, with varying degrees of cellularity, with neoplastic cells often set in a myxoid, chondroid or hyalinized background. Immunohistochemistry revealed positivi

Tophaceous pseudogout is a rare manifestation of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) deposition disease that particularly affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). We describe a case of tophaceous pseudogout and review the literature. Thirty-four cases of chronic CPPD deposition disease affecting the TMJ are described. Symptoms usually included pain and swelling. Most patients required surgery because of extensive crystal deposits, usually localized to the joint and adjacent structures but occasionally invasive. For many patients, malignancy was the preoperative diagnosis. Although patient

Enchondroma is the second most common benign bone tumour and the most common tumour affecting the bones of the hand. In the hand, they are most frequently found in the proximal phalanges. The case presented here is that of an expansive enchondroma in the distal phalanx of the thumb, which is rare. By operative treatment (curettage, reduction plastic and cancellous bone allografting) we were able to correct the deformity of the distal phalanx and the thumbnail almost completely, as well as improving the stability and achieving a good cosmetic result.

Long-term follow-up reports on chondroid lesions of the skull base are rarely presented in the literature. There are virtually no data on natural growth rates of these tumors based on MRI obtained over a period of 10 years or longer. We followed a patient who has had such a lesion for more than 12 years. A non-progressive, slight abducens palsy has been the only associated symptom so far. Even though the patient was operated on for an additional intracranial arterio-venous malformation, clinical features and chromosomal testing excluded Maffucci's syndrome. The MRI follow-up in this case provi

This paper presents the clinically most efficient MRI method at the present stage of development. The method combines a multi-echo sequence with TEs between 30 and 240 ms with an isotrope or anisotrope data acquisition mode known as 3DME-MRI. Both conventional head or whole body receiver coils can be used, or, for a better spatial resolution, surface coils. The theoretical background of this method is discussed and results of application in the region of the brain are presented.

Clinical features and X-rays of thirty-four cases with cubitus varus deformity were analysed in order to explain the occurrence of tardy ulnar nerve palsy caused by cubitus varus deformity. Cubitus varus cases with tardy ulnar nerve palsy, compared to cases without it, were older at the first visit to the clinic for cubitus varus deformity. There were no other differences between the two groups in clinical features. Computed tomography showed that the olecranon moved to the ulnar side against the olecranon fossa. Operative findings showed that the medial head of triceps brachii shifted mediall

This is believed to be the first report in the orthopaedic literature on the value of computerized axial tomography in the diagnosis of synovial osteochondromatosis. The disease, rare in young children, is described in a young girl in whom it was first diagnosed at the age of nine and who was followed for 11 years. The role of CAT scan and arthrogram in the diagnosis and management of the disease and of frozen section histology in determining its surgical correction are discussed.

Chordomas are malignant tumors with lobulated structure which usually consists of vacuolated physaliferous cells in a mucoid stroma (Enzinger et al. 1969). These cells originate from remnants of the chorda dorsalis. Most chordomas are located either at the end of the vertebral column, i.e., in the sacrococcygeal region or at the base of the skull near the sphenooccipital synchondrosis. More than half of all tumors are located in the sacrococcygeal region. In contrast to most cases of sacrococcygeal chordomas which show a predominant presacral tumor infiltration we report on a patient suffering

BACKGROUND: Maffucci syndrome (MS) and Ollier disease (OD) are rare diseases characterized by multiple benign enchondromas. The incidence of skull base (SB) enchondromas and the risk of malignant transformation remain unknown. Most SB lesions are asymptomatic, and surgical resection carries significant morbidity. Observation may be a reasonable strategy. We report our experience with observation of probable SB enchondromas in MS/OD patients.
METHODS: Retrospective review of OD/MS patients with cranial imaging between 1995 and 2018 at 1 institution.
RESULTS: 14 patients were included: 3 with …

A 2-year-old boy presented with a giant mass in the masticatory space. The mass exhibited a lobulating ossification, with no attachment to the adjacent normal bone. An enucleation was performed under the tentative diagnosis of extra-articular synovial chondromatosis, benign ossifying neoplasm, non-neoplastic heterotopic ossification, or low-grade malignancy. Upon microscopic examination, the excised mass was composed of multiple osteocartilaginous areas. We hereby present detailed clinicopathological findings.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) and aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are rare bone tumors and even rarer in the spine. To date, no report has been made of CMF with secondary ABC in the cervical spine.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the diagnosis and surgical treatment of a case of CMF with secondary ABC of C6, a rare occurrence in an uncommon location.
STUDY DESIGN: The study design is a case report.
METHODS: A 27-year-old woman presented with numbness with paresthesias of the right upper extremity. Diagnostic imaging revealed diffuse enlargement of the right

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the long-term results of treatment with curettage followed by an autograft or allograft application in patients with enchondroma of the hand.
METHODS: Within a 15-year period, 76 patients (41 males, 35 females; mean age 32 years; range 14 to 47 years) were operated on for enchondroma of the hand. Following curettage of the lesion, reconstruction of the defect was made either by an autograft obtained from the iliac crest (n=76) or by a dehydrated cancellous allograft (n=15). The diagnosis was histologically confirmed in all the cases. Functional and radiographic result…

A 28-year-old man with chondroid chordoma, an uncommon variant of chordoma, is reported. The patient presented with visual disturbance and hypopituitarism. The latter is a rare complication of intracranial chordoma. The preoperative diagnosis of chondroid chordoma of the skull base was based on unique findings on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging studies. The development of the tumor over six years suggests that the prognosis of chondroid chordoma may be poor in younger patients, as recently reported. Although chondroid chordoma is very rare, it should be included in the diffe
