Spatial Characterization of Woody Species Diversity in Tropical Savannas Using GEDI and Optical Data.

Developing the capacity to monitor species diversity worldwide is of great importance in halting biodiversity loss. To this end, remote sensing plays a unique role. In this study, we evaluate the potential of Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) data, combined with conventional satellite optical imagery and climate reanalysis data, to predict in situ alpha diversity (Species richness, Simpson index, and Shannon index) among tree species. Data from Sentinel-2 optical imagery, ERA-5 climate data, SRTM-DEM imagery, and simulated GEDI data were selected for the characterization of divers

Using an autologistic regression model to identify spatial risk factors and spatial risk patterns of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in Mainland China.

BACKGROUND: There have been large-scale outbreaks of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in Mainland China over the last decade. These events varied greatly across the country. It is necessary to identify the spatial risk factors and spatial distribution patterns of HFMD for public health control and prevention. Climate risk factors associated with HFMD occurrence have been recognized. However, few studies discussed the socio-economic determinants of HFMD risk at a space scale. METHODS: HFMD records in Mainland China in May 2008 were collected. Both climate and socio-economic factors were sel

Estimation of sinking velocity using free-falling dynamically scaled models: Foraminifera as a test case.

The velocity of settling particles is an important determinant of distribution in extinct and extant species with passive dispersal mechanisms, such as plants, corals and phytoplankton. Here, we adapted dynamic scaling, borrowed from engineering, to determine settling velocity. Dynamic scaling leverages physical models with relevant dimensionless numbers matched to achieve similar dynamics to the original object. Previous studies have used flumes, wind tunnels or towed models to examine fluid flow around objects with known velocities. Our novel application uses free-falling models to determine

Communicating sentiment and outlook reverses inaction against collective risks.

Collective risks permeate society, triggering social dilemmas in which working toward a common goal is impeded by selfish interests. One such dilemma is mitigating runaway climate change. To study the social aspects of climate-change mitigation, we organized an experimental game and asked volunteer groups of three different sizes to invest toward a common mitigation goal. If investments reached a preset target, volunteers would avoid all consequences and convert their remaining capital into monetary payouts. In the opposite case, however, volunteers would lose all their capital with 50% probab

Impacts of climate change on urban stormwater runoff quantity and quality in a cold region.

Climate change poses significant challenges to urban environments affecting both flood risks and stormwater pollutant loadings. However, studies on variations in stormwater runoff quantity and quality in cold regions, which are highly sensitive to climate change, are notably limited. Integrating climatic, hydrologic, and hydraulic modelling, the study assesses the potential impacts of climate change on stormwater runoff volume and pollutant dynamics in a Canadian urban watershed (Calgary). A two-year field program was conducted to support the calibration and validation of the Storm Water Manag

Impacts of climate change on the potential distribution of Pulex simulans and Polygenis gwyni.

Pulex simulans and Polygenis gwyni are vectors of many flea-borne diseases. They were widely recorded in the United States and Mexico between 1970 and 2000. Maximum entropy models were used to explore the habitats of both fleas under different climate scenarios to provide the scientific basis for the surveillance and control of flea-borne diseases. We screened climate variables by principal component analysis and Pearson's correlation test and evaluated model performance by ROC curve. ArcMap was used to visualize expressions. Under current climatic conditions, the medium and highly suitable ar

Predicting current and future high-risk areas for vectors and reservoirs of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Iran.

Climate change will affect the distribution of species in the future. To determine the vulnerable areas relating to CL in Iran, we applied two models, MaxEnt and RF, for the projection of the future distribution of the main vectors and reservoirs of CL. The results of the models were compared in terms of performance, species distribution maps, and the gain, loss, and stable areas. The models provided a reasonable estimate of species distribution. The results showed that the Northern and Southern counties of Iran, which currently do not have a high incidence of CL may witness new foci in the fu

Geospatial suitability of cacao in Amazonas (Peru): An ensemble predictive modeling approach (BIOMOD2) integrating multisource data, territorial management, and plant health.

Identifying climatically suitable areas for cacao cultivation (Theobroma cacao L.) is essential to guide sustainable intensification, territorial planning, and compliance with emerging environmental standards in tropical regions. This study assessed the current climatic suitability of cacao in the Amazonas department (northwestern Peru) using an ensemble modeling approach implemented in biomod2, integrating bioclimatic, topographic, and edaphic predictors with spatial biophysical exclusion criteria, legal conservation constraints, regulatory eligibility associated with the European Union Defor

Associations between dietary patterns and adequate intake of climate-sensitive micronutrients among young children living in Siaya County, Kenya: Findings from the ALIMUS study baseline data.

BACKGROUND: Climate change impacts food security in sub-Saharan Africa due to harvest losses and micronutrient reductions in staple foods. We aimed at identifying dietary patterns and their associations with climate-sensitive micronutrients (iron, zinc, selenium, vitamin A) among young children in rural Kenya. METHODS: We analyzed baseline data (N = 626; age range: 6-23 months, male sex: 54%) of a cluster-randomized controlled trial for nutrition interventions in Siaya county. Nutrient adequacy ratios (NARs) were calculated from semi-quantitative food frequency data. Dietary patterns were der

Spatially Heterogeneous Responses of Body Growth to El Niño-Southern Oscillation Signal During Different Life Stages in Jumbo Squid (Dosidicus gigas).

Climate variability can affect growth differently across life stages, but whether these effects vary among spatially distinct groups remains poorly understood. We investigated how climate variability experienced at different life stages interacts with spatial context to shape the growth trajectories of jumbo squid (Dosidicus gigas) in the eastern Pacific Ocean. We analyzed a dataset comprising statolith-based age estimates for 1415 female jumbo squid collected over multiple years. Spatial growth patterns were modeled using nonlinear mixed-effects growth models, and life stage-specific effects

Whether curse or blessing: A counterintuitive perspective on global pest thrips infestation under climatic change with implications to agricultural economics.

The improvement and application of pest models to predict yield losses is still a challenge for the scientific community. However, pest models were targeted chiefly towards scheduling scouting or pesticide applications to deal with pest infestation. Thysanoptera (thrips) significantly impact the productivity of many economically important crops worldwide. Until now, no comprehensive study is available on the global distribution of pest thrips, as well as on the extent of cropland vulnerability worldwide. Further, nothing is known about the climate change impacts on these insects. Thus the pres

Do risk perceptions and constraints influence the adoption of climate change practices among small livestock herders in Punjab, Pakistan?

Climate change is severely damaging the agricultural system of many food producing regions worldwide. Small/subsistent livestock herders are the most vulnerable and less resilient group towards climatic disasters within South Asian region including Pakistan. The adoption of climate-smart practices would be beneficial for small livestock herders because of its potential to ensure food security, improve income, and sustain development simultaneously. The purpose of this paper is to investigate factors influencing small livestock herders' adaptation decisions towards changing climate by conductin

Investigating a deterministic canonical model for tropical influenza.

Mechanistic infectious disease models are crucial for understanding the forces driving epidemics. Many epidemic models naturally produce equilibrium or stationary behaviors readily seen in epidemiological surveillance. However, respiratory viruses in tropical locations exhibit non-equilibrium behavior without consistent timing. This prevents standard models that commonly produce cycles and equilibria from describing their true dynamics. To evaluate deterministic model structures that can create asynchronous nonannual epidemic patterns seen with tropical influenza, we parameterized 30 variation

An excel-based tool to support decisions on the selection of outflow devices for blue roofs using historical maximum rain events.

Distributed infrastructures play a key role in urban stormwater management by reducing flood risks. Over the past decade, green and blue roofs have emerged as effective distributed solutions, especially as roofs cover a large share of urban land and climate change intensifies storm events that centralized systems often struggle to manage. Designing these infrastructures poses challenges, particularly in selecting an appropriate design hyetograph based on rainfall duration and return period. Simulating water storage and release dynamics enables the optimal selection of outflow devices, ensuring

Spatiotemporal clustering, climate periodicity, and social-ecological risk factors for dengue during an outbreak in Machala, Ecuador, in 2010.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral disease, is a rapidly emerging public health problem in Ecuador and throughout the tropics. However, we have a limited understanding of the disease transmission dynamics in these regions. Previous studies in southern coastal Ecuador have demonstrated the potential to develop a dengue early warning system (EWS) that incorporates climate and non-climate information. The objective of this study was to characterize the spatiotemporal dynamics and climatic and social-ecological risk factors associated with the largest dengue epidemic to date in Macha

The Mediating and Moderating Roles of Innovation Climate in the Relationship Between Nurses' Attitudes Toward Artificial Intelligence, Creative Self-Efficacy, and Clinical Competence.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into health care; however, how nurses' attitudes toward AI and creative self-efficacy are associated with perceived clinical competence within different organizational contexts remains unclear. AIM: To examine whether perceived climate for innovation statistically mediates the association between nurses' attitudes toward AI and perceived clinical competence and moderates the association between creative self-efficacy and perceived clinical competence. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 233 nurses recruited online b

Small-Scale Stabilizing Effect of Asynchrony in Vital Rate Responses to Climate in an Imperiled Dune Thistle.

Changes in population responses to climate are usually studied at broad spatial grains, such as across species ranges. Only a handful of studies have investigated how small-scale variation, for example driven by soil conditions and microtopography, can mediate the responses of population vital rates to climate. Here, we examine responses of Cirsium pitcheri vital rates to climate across five subpopulations occurring in coastal dune locations that range from the foredune to the backdune. We consider five vital rates: seedling survival, adult survival, growth, flowering probability, and the size

Diffusion of medications for opioid use disorder treatment in jail settings: a convergent mixed methods study of jail staff perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Implementation of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in jails varies by facility and across states. Organizational climate, including staff attitudes toward change and exposure to education, can influence perceptions of innovations like MOUD in jails. Using a mixed methods design, we aimed to understand the association between organizational climate and jail staff perceptions of MOUD. METHODS: Jail staff (n = 111) who operate MOUD programs in 6 Massachusetts jails completed surveys that included the Organizational Readiness for Implementing Change (ORIC) survey. Random eff

Environmental, climatic, and social risk factors of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome and the implications of climate change.

BACKGROUND: SFTS is a tick-borne infectious disease with a high case fatality ratio with geographic expansion. While there have been some studies exploring the link between environmental and climatic factors on SFTS, we further test a hypothesis that social factors may play a role in the increasing burden. METHODS: Using data from Zhejiang Province, China (2011-2023), we estimated the effects of environmental, climatic, and social factors on SFTS incidence using a Bayesian negative binomial regression model.
