Association between Giardia duodenalis and coinfection with other diarrhea-causing pathogens in India.

Giardia duodenalis, is often seen as an opportunistic pathogen and one of the major food and waterborne parasites. Some insights of Giardia … his parasite. Moreover, the age distribution of the diarrhoeal cases was very much dependent on the coinfection rate of Giardia infection. As per our findings, Giardia infection rate seems to play a vital role in regulation of the whole diarrhoeal disease spectrum in this endemic region.

Giant-cell glioblastoma of childhood associated with HIV-1 and JC virus coinfection.

PURPOSE: John Cunningham (JC) viral DNA sequence has seldom been reported in patients with brain tumors such as high grade gliomas and medulloblastomas, pointing to a role in the etiopathogenesis of such tumors. RESULTS: We present a unique clinical case of an HIV-positive pediatric patient with multifocal leukoencephalopathy and confirmed JC virus (JCV) infection that developed a giant-cell glioblastoma. CONCLUSIONS: Experimental data with infected primates has previously hypothesized an association of human giant-cell glioblastoma with JCV or progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, tho

Outcomes of liver transplant recipients with hepatitis C and human immunodeficiency virus coinfection.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a controversial indication for liver transplantation (LT) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients because of reportedly poor outcomes. This prospective, multicenter US cohort study compared patient and graft survival for 89 HCV/HIV-coinfected patients and 2 control groups: 235 HCV-monoinfected LT controls and all US transplant recipients who were 65 years old or older. The 3-year patient and graft survival rates were 60% [95% confidence interval (CI) = 47%-71%] and 53% (95% CI = 40%-64%) for the HCV/HIV patients and 79% (95% CI = 72%-84%) and 74% (95%

Severe coinfection of melioidosis and dengue fever in Northeastern Brazil: first case report.

This report focuses on a fatality involving severe dengue fever and melioidosis in a 28-year-old truck driver residing in Pacoti in northeastern Brazil. He exhibited long-term respiratory symptoms (48 days) and went through a wide-ranging clinical investigation at three hospitals, after initial clinical diagnoses of pneumonia, visceral leishmaniasis, tuberculosis, and fungal sepsis. After death, Burkholderia pseudomallei was isolated in a culture of ascitic fluid. Dengue virus type 1 was detected by polymerase chain reaction in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF); this infection was the cause of death.

Schistosomiasis coinfection in children influences acquired immune response against Plasmodium falciparum malaria antigens.

BACKGROUND: Malaria and schistosomiasis coinfection frequently occurs in tropical countries. This study evaluates the influence of Schistosoma haematobium infection on specific antibody responses and cytokine production to recombinant merozoite surface protein-1-19 (MSP1-(19)) and schizont extract of Plasmodium falciparum in malaria-infected children. METHODOLOGY: Specific IgG1 to MSP1-(19), as well as IgG1 and IgG3 to schizont extract were significantly increased in coinfected children compared to P. falciparum mono-infected children. Stimulation with MSP1-(19) lead to a specific production …

[Cyclospora cayetanensis and Cryptosporidium parvum coinfection in a pregnant woman with prolonged diarrhoea].

Cyclospora cayetanensis which is a recently described pathogen, is associated with prolonged diarrheae and history of travelling to tropical regions and intake of suspicious food and water. Cryptosporidium parvum is another pathogen that causes severe diarrhea defined initially in especially AIDS patients since 1980's. Cases of cyclosporiasis are frequently missed, since it is difficult to detect the parasite in human fecal samples, despite an increasing amount of data regarding this parasite. To identify both of these coccidian protozoa, faeces should be examined by modified acid-fast stain.

Helicobacter pylori coinfection is a confounder, modulating mucosal inflammation in oral submucous fibrosis.

UNLABELLED: The oral cavity has been considered a potential reservoir for Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) , from where the organism causes recurrent gastric infections. AIM: With this case-control study we tried to evaluate the role of H pylori in the etiology of mucosal inflammation, a condition that compounds the morbid state associated with oral submucous fibrosis (OSF). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects ( n = 150) were selected following institutional regulations on sample collection and grouped into test cases and positive and negative controls based on the presence of mucosal fibrosis and

Coinfection of Leptospira spp and Toxoplasma gondii among stray dogs in Bangkok, Thailand.

Leptospirosis and toxoplasmosis are zoonotic diseases with global importance. Asymptomatic animals harboring these pathogens may act as carriers to other animals including humans. The objective of this study was to investigate the seroprevalence of Leptospira and Toxoplasma infections in stray dogs in Bangkok. A total of 230 stray dogs from monasteries in a Bangkok district were examined for specific antibodies to T. gondii and Leptospira. The seroprevalence of T. gondii was determined by a modified latex agglutination test (cut off 1 > or = 64). A microscopic agglutination test was performed

A cross-sectional study of HIV and tuberculosis coinfection cases in mainland China.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis (TB) within mainland China is unprecedented and the convergence of these two infectious diseases is increasingly and significantly endangering human health for socioeconomic development. To date, the clinical manifestations, laboratory presentation, and epidemiologic features of HIV/TB coinfection cases in mainland China have not been described in detail. To assess the incidence, clinical characteristics and outcome of coinfection with HIV and TB, we conducted a cross-sectional study of coinfected cases reported from nine domestic hospita…

The epidemiology, natural history and prevention of hepatitis B: implications of HIV coinfection.

Approximately 350 million people have chronic hepatitis B infection, a leading cause of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Patients who are infected through parenteral or sexual transmission are also at risk for acquisition of HIV. Concomitant HIV infection can lead to an increased risk of morbidity and mortality from hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related cirrhosis, end-stage liver disease and HCC. This review will focus on the epidemiology, natural history and prevention of HBV infection and the modulating effect of HIV on the clinical expression of HBV disease.

Multinodular polymyositis in a patient with human immunodeficiency and hepatitis C virus coinfection.

We report a patient who developed multiple inflammatory muscle masses and generalized polymyositis in the setting of combined human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of muscles showed patchy edema which was particularly intense within the nodular masses. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) showed no evidence of either virus within muscle. This report reviews earlier literature on muscle nodules associated with myositis and discusses the differential diagnosis of muscle masses in HIV infection.

Screening for coinfection with Cryptosporidium and Giardia in Oregon public health clinic patients.

During 1984, we screened 1,710 local public health clinic patients for Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Six patients (0.35 per cent) were positive for Cryptosporidium, and 214 (12.5 per cent) were positive for Giardia. One patient was positive for both parasites. In contrast to other reported studies, no evidence was found for an association between the two parasites (odds ratio = 1.39, 95 per cent CI 0.16, 11.8). The apparent prevalence of Cryptosporidium in our study population was lower than has been reported previously. More laboratory screening could contribute to a better understanding of th

Coinfection with a rhabdovirus: vesicular stomatitis virus of Indiana and New-Jersey serotypes.

Coinfection of cells with vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) of Indiana and New-Jersey serotypes were performed. Thermosensitive mutants (ts) of VSV Indiana and the wild type strain (+) of New-Jersey were used. Harvests and titrations were made at permissive(PT) and nonpermissive (NPT) temperatures. It was shown that the harvest was mainly composed of one parental-like infectious particles. The dominance of one serotype over the other was shown to be a function of the relative multiplicity of the two viruses; the presence of a thermosensitive lesion imparts a disadvantage to the corresponding se…

Coinfection with infectious bronchitis virus exacerbates the pathogenicity of Riemerella anatipestifer in chickens.

INTRODUCTION: Since its initial isolation from chickens, Riemerella anatipestifer has emerged as an increasingly prevalent pathogen in major poultry-producing regions, causing substantial economic losses, particularly through reduced egg production. METHODS: In the present study, an epidemiological investigation was conducted to detect coinfected pathogens in R. anatipestifer-positive clinical samples. Based on the epidemiological findings, the impact of coinfection with infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) on the pathogenicity of R. anatipestifer was evaluated in specific-pathogen-free (SPF) ch…
