The present study summarizes our experience in treating a patient with a suspected granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)-producing squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lower gingiva, which is a rather rare entity. A 56-year-old woman underwent surgical excision of palate leukoplakia in 1996. In 2009, however, a leukoplakic superficial tumor was detected in the lower left gingiva, for which the patient underwent gingivectomy. This was subsequently diagnosed as SCC. The patient also underwent superselective arterial injection chemotherapy combined with radiotherapy, after local recurrenc

OBJECTIVE: The authors performed a randomised trial in very preterm small-for-gestational age (SGA) babies to determine if prophylaxis with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) improves outcomes (the PROGRAMS trial). Despite increased neutrophil counts following GM-CSF, the authors reported no significant difference in neonatal sepsis-free survival.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 280 babies born <31 weeks of gestation and SGA were entered into the trial. Outcome was determined at 2 years to determine neurodevelopmental and general health outcomes, including economic costs.

The radioprotective effects of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GCSF) were further investigated with respect to the testicular system. Recombinant human GCSF (100 μg kg(-1) body weight/day) was administrated to male C3H/HeN mice by subcutaneous injection for three consecutive days before pelvic irradiation (5 Gy) and histopathological parameters were assessed at 12 h and 21 days post-irradiation (pi). The GCSF protected the germ cells from radiation induced- apoptosis (P < 0.01 vs. irradiated group at 12 h pi). GCSF remarkably attenuated radiation-induced reduction in testis weight, semi

INTRODUCTION: Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) is used routinely in clinical practice for the treatment of neutropenia and to increase generation of hematopoietic stem cells in bone marrow donors. A growing body of literature on the neurotrophic effects of G-CSF has led to clinical trials in stroke, Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD).
OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study was to determine if G-CSF administration would rescue the nigro-striatal system and restore locomotor function after completion of a sub-acute course of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tet

BACKGROUND: Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) has been implicated as an important mediator in the pathogenesis of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the expression of GM-CSF and its receptor in airway samples in asthma and COPD across disease severity needs to be further defined.
METHODS: Sputum GM-CSF was measured in 18 control subjects, 45 subjects with asthma and 47 subjects with COPD. Enumeration of GM-CSF+ cells in the bronchial submucosa and airway smooth muscle bundle was performed in 29 control subjects, 36 subjects with asthma an

Recent advances in the knowledge of the EGFR pathway have revealed its contribution to distinct immune/inflammatory functions of the epidermis. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the role of EGFR in the regulation of keratinocyte GM-CSF expression. In cultured human keratinocytes, proinflammatory cytokines synergized with TGF-alpha to induce GM-CSF expression. Accordingly, high epidermal levels of EGFR activation are associated with enhanced expression of GM-CSF in lesional skin of patients with psoriasis or allergic contact dermatitis. In cultured keratinocytes, pharmacological inhibiti

We report a case of urinary bladder cancer that produced granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF). A 56-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with the chief complaint of macroscopic hematuria. Cystoscopy demonstrated a thumb tip-sized bladder tumor. Computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed muscular invasion in the bladder, but no distant metastases. The complete blood count and laboratory examination showed leukocytosis of 25,200/mm3 and a high G-CSF level of 145 pg/ml in the peripheral blood. Although he underwent total cystectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy using

PURPOSE: The use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) in the treatment of non-chemotherapy drug- induced agranulocytosis is controversial. We aimed at assessing the effect of G-CSF on the duration of agranulocytosis.
METHODS: To assess the effect of G-CSF on the duration of agranulocytosis, a Cox proportional hazard model with an estimated propensity score covariate adjusting for several prognostic factors was used.
RESULTS: One hundred and forty-five episodes of agranulocytosis were prospectively collected from January 1994 to December 2000 in Barcelona (Spain). No differences w

BackgroundWe report the case of a 56-year-old male with multiple myeloma in whom recurrent fevers and leukocytosis delayed potentially effective chemotherapy due to concern for active infection.Design and measurementsA thorough infectious workup, including CT and PET scans, was negative. The patient was eventually found to have an elevated serum granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) of 113 pg/ml (normal range 0.0 - 39.1 pg/ml), which was likely the cause of his persistent leukocytosis and fevers. Multiagent chemotherapy was initiated, and the fevers resolved in the next 4 days.ResultsL

The neuroimmunomodulatory effects of opiates during microbial infections are now well known; however, not much is known during leishmaniasis. Here, we report the effects of morphine on purified approximately 12-kDa component of Leishmania donovani amastigote antigen (LDAA-12)-induced colony-stimulating factor (CSF) production by mouse peritoneal macrophages (PMs) in vitro. Low concentrations (1 x 10(-9) and 1 x 10(-11) M) of morphine significantly (P < 0.05) augmented the production of CSFs, whereas high concentrations (1 x 10(-3) and 1 x 10(-5) M) inhibited CSF production. Morphine exerted a

A 68-year-old man was diagnosed as having bronchial asthma in November 1996. He presented with leukocytosis in June 2002. The WBC count was 29,900/microliter with 82% mature neutrophils showing toxic granules. The neutrophil alkaline phosphatase score and serum level of vitamin B12 were elevated. Bone marrow demonstrated myeloid hyperplasia and plasmacytosis. Cytogenetic and molecular analyses were negative for Philadelphia chromosome and BCR/ABL fusion gene. Lambda-type Bence-Jones protein was detected on the serum and urinary immunoelectrophoresis. The coexistence of chronic neutrophilic leu

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) levels in serum were determined by a highly-sensitive chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (limit of detection, 0.5 pg/ml) in 54 patients with Graves' disease including 6 patients complicated with methimazole-induced agranulocytosis. Serum G-CSF levels in patients with Graves' disease were not different from normal subjects and did not correlate with serum FT4 level or circulating neutrophil counts. Before the onset of agranulocytosis, there was no difference in serum G-CSF level between the patients complicated with agranulocytosis and the uncompli

BACKGROUND: Better understanding of embryology, histopathology and genetics of dysraphic conditions have lead to an expansion of this concept to entities with a similar microscopic appearance (e.g. enterogenous cysts, colloid cyst of the III-rd ventricle) or rated among neoplasms (e.g. mature teratoma), creating a certain conceptual confusion. Currently the diagnosis of "teratoma" is being substituted by "enterogenous cyst" or "teratomatous cyst".
AIM OF PAPER: Clarification of concepts in this field and presentation of the experience of the Department of Neurosurgery of the Children's Memori
