Exploring Condom Use Among Adult Cisgender Black Women in Texas: a Qualitative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cisgender Black women (CBW) remain disproportionately affected by HIV in the United States. Condoms, when used consistently and correctly, are an effective and reliable method for reducing acquisition and transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). However, consistent condom use among CBW is mixed. This study aimed to garner a contemporary conceptualization of factors impacting condom use among CBW with male sexual partner(s) residing in large urban areas in Texas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between December 2020 and January 2022, CBW (N = 154) were recruited …

Condom use self-efficacy with Indigenous youth: the integration of factor analysis with participatory research.

Indigenous youth in the United States are at elevated risk of infection with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) compared to non-Indigenous youth populations. Condom use is an effective strategy to mitigate HIV and STI transmission, and condom use self-efficacy (CUSE) is a key focal point of sexual and reproductive health interventions for Indigenous youth. CUSE scales can be used to measure CUSE, but most CUSE scales have been validated with non-Indigenous youth. The current study utilized a community-based participatory research framework to in

Structural and psychosocial determinants of condom nonuse among people living with HIV: a qualitative approach.

This descriptive qualitative study analyzed the meanings attributed to condom use and nonuse among adults living with HIV who are receiving antiretroviral treatment in Mexico. Through in-depth interviews with forty-four adults, the narratives were situated from an ecological perspective, considering individual, relational, community, structural, and epidemiological factors. The findings show that the decision not to use condoms is mainly driven by subjective processes related to pleasure, perceptions of a partner's health, normalization of risk, and resignation in the face of the diagnosis. Am…

Gen Z and Safe Sex Practices: Drivers of Condom Purchase Intention in an Emerging Country.

Given the global importance of safe sex practices, understanding what drives condom purchase intention (CPI) among young people is especially critical in emerging regions. Drawing on the theory of planned behavior and protection motivation theory, this study scrutinizes the associations between self-efficacy (SE), perceived behavioral control (PBC), subjective norms (SNs), comfort in purchasing (CIP), information regarding sexually transmitted infections (IRSTIs), embarrassment about negotiation (EAN) and CPI among Generation Z. This study employed a mixed-methods design to examine these relat

OBJECTIVE: To model condom usage by jail-incarcerated women incarcerated in US local jails and understand results in terms of fundamental cause theory. DESIGN, SAMPLE, MEASUREMENTS: We surveyed 102 women in an urban jail in the Midwest United States. Chi-square tests and generalized linear modeling were used to identify factors of significance for women who used condoms during last sex compared with women who did not. Stepwise multiple logistic regression was conducted to estimate the relation between the outcome variable and variables linked to condom use in the literature. RESULTS: Logisti…

Poor Acceptability of Female Condom by Young Cameroonians: an Unmet Programmatic Agenda for HIV Prevention.

BACKGROUND: An important component of the response to the AIDS epidemic is the prevention of HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases through the use of condoms. In order to enhance HIV prevention programs and minimize the occurrence of unwanted pregnancies, female condoms have been introduced within the community, with the ultimate goal of reducing vulnerability of women. The success of such a program depends on its acceptance by the target population. METHODS: A survey was conducted among 426 respondents from different regions of Cameroon, to evaluate their perception of HIV/AI…

Color It Real: A Program to Increase Condom Use and Reduce Substance Abuse and Perceived Stress.

Few interventions have targeted perceived stress as a co-occurring construct central to substance use and subsequent HIV/AIDS risk reduction among African American urban young adults. The Color It Real Program was a seven session, weekly administered age-specific and culturally-tailored intervention designed to provide substance abuse and HIV education and reduce perceived stress among African Americans ages 18 to 24 in Atlanta, GA. Effectiveness was assessed through a quasi-experimental study design that consisted of intervention (n = 122) and comparison (n = 70) groups completing a pre- and
