Challenges in the veterinary microbiology diagnostic laboratory: a novel Acinetobacter species as presumptive cause for feline unilateral conjunctivitis.

The present study highlights challenges in the veterinary microbiology diagnostic laboratory in the identification of bacteria responsible for infections in veterinary settings, particularly when evidence-based data is lacking. A 1.8-year-old neutered male domestic cat (FIV/FeLV negative) was presented to a veterinary practice in April 2016 with a history of left unilateral mild conjunctivitis that was empirically treated with fusidic acid and chloramphenicol. In January 2017, the same animal was presented with chronic left unilateral conjunctivitis and an eye swab was submitted for microbiolo

Infection reduces anti-predator behaviors in house finches.

Infectious diseases can cause host mortality through direct or indirect mechanisms, including altered behavior. Diminished anti-predator behavior is among the most-studied causes of indirect mortality during infection, particularly for systems in which a parasite's life-cycle requires transmission from prey to predator. Significantly less work has examined whether directly-transmitted parasites and pathogens also reduce anti-predator behaviors. Here we test whether the directly-transmitted bacterial pathogen, Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG), reduces responses to predation-related stimuli in hous

Paediatric Strabismus Surgery: a Retrospective Analysis of Different Postoperative Treatment Regimes to Prevent Infections.

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Povidone iodine (PVI) has been reported to surpass topical antibiotics in antibacterial effectiveness. Consequently, we changed the regimen post strabismus surgery in 2017 from a one-week course of topical antibiotic eye drops to PVI given once at the end of surgery. In an adult population, this resulted in no significant change in infection rate and healing. In paediatric patients, the immune system is not mature and children may be exposed to different pathogens. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate these two regimens in regard to their efficacy to prevent i

[Quantitative study and typization of aerobic bacteria in the conjunctival sacs of healthy eyes].

We carried out a qualitative and quantitative bacteriological research into the conjunctives of 220 subjects in good health mostly women (180) exempt from recent or previous eyes diseases. In order to gather conjunctival bacteria we employed with a few variations Hadley's et al. (1973 [12]) method. Among the calculated bacterial flora we found as the most numerous ones Staphylococcus epidermidis (mean valor 1960/ml), then Streptococci (480/ml), Micrococci (465/ml), Diphteroides (360/ml), Enterococci (77/ml) and numerous (700/ml) Gram-positives Cocci like Sarcina, Micrococcus tetragenes, Diploc

Infectious causes for feline upper respiratory tract disease--a case-control study.

The aim of this case-control study was to investigate the prevalence of microorganisms in group-living cats with clinical signs of upper respiratory tract disease (URTD), in in-contact cats and in cats in groups without URTD problems. Samples were taken from the ventral conjunctival fornix for analysis of feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV), Mycoplasma felis and Chlamydiaceae using a real-time polymerase chain reaction technique. The oropharynx was sampled for bacteriological culture and viral isolation. Specific infectious agents were identified in 11/20 (55%) of the case households, in 7/20 (35%) of

The lack of specificity of tracheal aspirates in the diagnosis of pulmonary infection in intubated children.

OBJECTIVES: Ventilator-associated pneumonia is the first or second most commonly diagnosed nosocomial infection in the PICU. Centers for Disease Control diagnostic criteria include clinical signs or symptoms in conjunction with a "positive" tracheal aspirate, defined as more than 10 colony-forming units/mL of bacteria on quantitative culture and/or more than 25 polymorphonuclear neutrophils per low-power field on Gram stain. We hypothesized that tracheal aspirate cultures and Gram stains would not correlate with clinical signs and symptoms and would therefore not distinguish between colonizati

Excellent outcome of primary Neisseria meningitidis keratoconjunctivitis.

Infectious conjunctivitis is a very common presentation to medical professional and ophthalmologist all over the world. Although its typically self-limiting and treatable in almost all of the cases, but we need to be aware of the rare and potentially life threatening if the cause is not promptly identified and treated accordingly. In our case report, we highlighted the rare case of Neisseria meningitidis as a primary cause of keratoconjunctivitis. Neisseria meningitidis is a rare etiology of keratoconjunctivitis and its ocular presentations are quite similar with other bacterial or viral infec

Relative impact of clinical evidence and over-the-counter prescribing on topical antibiotic use for acute infective conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: Acute infective conjunctivitis is a common presentation in general practice. In 2005, three placebo-controlled clinical trials showed that use of topical antibiotics had a small effect on time to clinical resolution. In the same year, chloramphenicol eye drops were made available for sale over the counter. AIM: To compare the relative impact of clinical trial evidence and a change to over-the-counter availability on community use of topical chloramphenicol. DESIGN OF STUDY: Observational study using mainly routinely collected data for England. SETTING: National prescribing data

Treatment of chlamydial conjunctivitis.

Adult inclusion conjunctivitis and neonatal inclusion conjunctivitis are important infectious diseases commonly encountered by ophthalmologists in industrialized countries. Patients with inclusion conjunctivitis are frequently complicated by genitourinary and epipharyngeal chlamydial infections. Thus, treatment of chlamydial conjunctivitis must include systemic antibiotics and not be limited to topical application of antibiotics to the eye. Effective anti-chlamydial agents include tetracyclines, macrolides, and some of the fluoroquinolones. Prolonged and frequent application of ophthalmic agen

Conjunctivitis associated with a Mycoplasma-like organism in swine.

A midwestern producer reported high incidence of conjunctivitis and keratoconjunctivitis in a herd of crossbred finishing swine. Complete necropsy was performed on 3 pigs with bilateral mucopurulent conjunctivitis and chemosis; other gross lesions were not seen. Mycoplasma sp was isolated from conjunctival swab specimens obtained from 1 pig; small numbers of streptococci and coagulase-negative staphylococci were isolated from conjunctival swab specimens from all 3 pigs. Neither swine influenza virus nor pseudorabies virus was isolated from conjunctival swab specimens. Histologically, the 3 pig

Non-congenital HSV-1 Keratitis in an Immunocompetent 9-Month-Old Infant.

Isolated, non-congenital herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) keratitis in immunocompetent infants is exceedingly rare and may be easily misdiagnosed, leading to delays in appropriate antiviral therapy. This case is unique in that it describes HSV-1 keratitis in a healthy 9-month-old infant presenting without systemic illness, initially treated as bacterial conjunctivitis. The patient presented with unilateral eye pain, redness, and corneal opacification. Subsequent evaluation revealed HSV-1 keratitis, and the patient was treated with intravenous acyclovir in combination with topical moxifloxac

[Reactive arthritis].

Reactive arthritis Abstract. Reactive Arthritis is a sterile, inflammatory arthritis that is typically preceded by a bacterial gastrointestinal or urogenital infection occurring one to four weeks previously. The typical pattern is an asymmetric oligoarthritis most common affecting the lower extremities. Similar to other spondyloarthropathies, enthesitis, dactylitis, and sacroiliitis can occur as well as extra-articular manifestations, such as conjunctivitis, anterior uveitis, oral ulcers, circinate balanitis, and keratoderma blennorrhagicum. The treatment of "triggering" infection with antibio

Host-pathogen interactions of nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae: from commensal to pathogen.

Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is a commensal microbe often isolated from the upper and lower respiratory tract. This bacterial species can cause sinusitis, acute otitis media in preschool children, exacerbations in patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well as conjunctivitis and bacteremia. Since the introduction of a vaccine against H. influenzae serotype b in the 1990s, the burden of H. influenzae-related infections has been increasingly dominated by NTHi. Understanding the ability of NTHi to cause infection is currently an expanding area of study. NTH

[Lyme disease--a relatively new entity].

PURPOSE: To bring in the attention of the medical personnel a relatively new discovered disease with serious consequences, that is often mistaken with a great multitude of miscellaneous syndromes. Also we want to highlight that it is not a rare disease taken into account its endemicity in Europe and consequently in Romania. SUMMARY: Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by a spirochete named "Borrelia Burgdorferi" transmitted to humans by a minuscule tick. It is a multi-systemic illness with ocular involvement as well. The disease mimics other pathologic conditions and because of this

Avipox sp. in a colony of gray-crowned rosy finches (Leucosticte tephrocotis).

Members of a wild-caught colony of 16 gray-crowned rosy finches (Leucosticte tephrocotis) were presented with dermal and mucosal lesions, anorexia, emaciation, lethargy, and sudden death. Lesions included dermatitis, conjunctivitis, and glossitis. Skin scrapings from and bacterial culture of dermal lesions yielded Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Necropsy and histologic examination revealed characteristic epidermal and mucosal pox lesions, with the presence of characteristic Bollinger body intracellular inclusions. Electron microscopy (EM) provided confirmation of pox virus infectio
