An Investigation of the Effects of the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in Groups on the Cognitive Strategies of Emotion Regulation and Self-Control in Coronary Heart Disease Patients.

Coronary heart diseases are amongst the most common and severe diseases; also, the prevalence and emergence of these diseases are largely af … tudy using a convenience sampling method. They were then divided randomly into two experimental and control groups, with 15 participants in each group. The patients in the experimental group participated in eight 60-minute sessions of the Hayes' Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) (2002). However, no intervention was applied to the control group. The partici …

Sex-based differences in Plasmodium infection in the control groups of controlled human malaria infection trials in malaria-naive populations in the USA and the Netherlands: a pooled analysis.

BACKGROUND: Before infecting red blood cells and causing the clinical manifestations of malaria, the hepatotropic parasite Plasmodium falciparum completes a complex liver stage. Sex-based differences in pathogenesis by hepatotropic micro-organisms are well documented but unstudied for P falciparum in humans. We aimed to evaluate the effect of sex on the time to blood-stage positivity and initial blood-stage parasite densities as indicators of liver-stage dynamics and parasite replication. METHODS: We conducted a pooled analysis of data from malaria-naive participants in control groups from co…

Effectiveness of a scalable group-based education and monitoring program, delivered by health workers, to improve control of hypertension in rural India: A cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: New methods are required to manage hypertension in resource-poor settings. We hypothesised that a community health worker (CHW)-led group-based education and monitoring intervention would improve control of blood pressure (BP). METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a baseline community-based survey followed by a cluster randomised controlled trial of people with hypertension in 3 rural regions of South India, each at differing stages of epidemiological transition. Participants with hypertension, defined as BP ≥ 140/90 mm Hg or taking antihypertensive medication, were advised to visit

Comparative antimicrobial activity of gatifloxacin tested against Streptococcus spp. including quality control guidelines and etest method validation. Quality Control Study Group.

Gatifloxacin (formerly AM-1155 or CG 5501) is a new 8-methoxy fluoroquinolone with enhanced activity against Gram-positive cocci, especially Streptococcus pneumoniae and other streptococci. Recent clinical strains (599 isolates) were tested against gatifloxacin, three comparison fluoroquinolones, and penicillin by the reference broth microdilution, Etest (AB BIODISK, Solna, Sweden) and standardized disk diffusion methods (5 micrograms gatifloxacin disk). Gatifloxacin (MIC90, 0.5 microgram/ml) activity was generally comparable to that of trovafloxacin (MIC90, 0.25 microgram/ml), or sparfloxacin

A randomized controlled trial of a Group psychological intervention to increase locus of control for alcohol consumption among Alcohol-Misusing Short-term (male) Prisoners (GASP).

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Reducing alcohol misuse by male prisoners is an important global issue. Control of drinking behaviour could be a useful target for intervention in this population, and locus of control could be a causal factor in this. We aimed to assess the effect of a clinical psychologist-facilitated group intervention on male prisoners' locus of control of drinking behaviour. DESIGN: A two-arm, single-site, open, randomized controlled trial. SETTING: A category B local training prison in South Wales, housing about 770 mainly sentenced men. PARTICIPANTS: Prisoners serving less than 2

Cost-effectiveness of transdiagnostic group cognitive behavioural therapy versus group relaxation therapy for emotional disorders in primary care (PsicAP-Costs2): Protocol for a multicentre randomised controlled trial.

Several randomised controlled trials (RCT) have demonstrated the superiority of transdiagnostic group cognitive-behavioural therapy (TD-CBT) to treatment as usual (TAU) for emotional disorders in primary care. To date, however, no RCTs have been conducted to compare TD-CBT to another active intervention in this setting. Our aim is to conduct a single-blind RCT to compare group TD-CBT plus TAU to progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) plus TAU in adults (age 18 to 65 years) with a suspected emotional disorder. We expect that TD-CBT + TAU will be more cost-effective than TAU + PMR, and that these g

Immunogenicity of the UK group B meningococcal vaccine (4CMenB) schedule against groups B and C meningococcal strains (Sched3): outcomes of a multicentre, open-label, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The use of the multicomponent meningococcal vaccine 4CMenB in the UK schedule at 2, 4, and 12 months of age has been shown to be 59·1% effective at preventing invasive group B meningococcal disease. Here, we report the first data on the immunogenicity of this reduced-dose schedule to help to interpret this effectiveness estimate. METHODS: In this multicentre, parallel-group, open-label, randomised clinical trial, infants aged up to 13 weeks due to receive their primary immunisations were recruited via child health database mailouts in Oxfordshire and via general practice surgeries

Pendant alkyl and aryl groups on tin control complex geometry and reactivity with H2/D2 in Pt(SnR3)2(CNBu(t))2 (R = Bu(t), Pr(i), Ph, mesityl).

The complex Pt(SnBu(t)3)2(CNBu(t))2(H)2, 1, was obtained from the reaction of Pt(COD)2 and Bu(t)3SnH, followed by addition of CNBu(t). The two hydride ligands in 1 can be eliminated, both in solution and in the solid state, to yield Pt(SnBu(t)3)2(CNBu(t))2, 2. Addition of hydrogen to 2 at room temperature in solution and in the solid state regenerates 1. Complex 2 catalyzes H2-D2 exchange in solution to give HD. The proposed mechanism of exchange involves reductive elimination of Bu(t)3SnH from 1 to afford vacant sites on the Pt center, thus facilitating the exchange process. This is supported

Distribution of maternal age and birth order groups in cases with unclassified multiple congenital abnormalities according to the number of component abnormalities: a national population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple congenital abnormalities are caused by chromosomal aberrations, mutant major genes and teratogens. A minor proportion of these patients are identified as syndromes but the major part belonging to the group of unclassified multiple CAs (UMCAs). The main objective of this study was to evaluate the maternal age and birth order in pregnant women who had offspring affected with UMCA. The strong association between numerical chromosomal aberrations, e.g., Down syndrome and advanced maternal age is well-known and tested here. METHODS: The Hungarian Case-Control Surveillance of C
