Validation of a German translation of the CARE questionnaire and its implementation as electronic PROM to assess patient-reported postoperative convalescence and recovery after major urological surgery.

PURPOSE: To validate a German translation of the convalescence and recovery evaluation (CARE) as an electronic patient-reported outcome measure (ePROM) and use it to assess recovery after major urological surgery. METHODS: The CARE questionnaire was provided to patients scheduled for major urological surgery preoperatively, at discharge and 6 weeks postoperatively, using an ePROM system. Cronbach's alpha, inter-scale correlations and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to validate the translation. Mixed linear regression models were used to identify factors influencing CARE results, …

Potential involvement of persistently infected cells in protective immunity of grouper fish convalesced from nervous necrosis virus infection.

Nervous necrosis virus (NNV) is a simple RNA virus with high pathogenicity across over 170 fish species. Two experimental models have been developed to efficiently induce convalescent fish using live viruses: (1) pre-administering polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (poly(I:C)) to induce a non-specific antiviral state, and (2) maintaining fish at suboptimal temperatures for disease onset. Notably, these convalescent fish exhibit robust long-term protective immunity despite having undetectable levels of neutralizing antibodies. This study synthesizes established in vivo and in vitro data on the kin

Analysis of West Nile disease convalescents identifies human monoclonal antibodies protective against West Nile and related orthoflaviviruses.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne pathogen of global concern that can cause fatal neuroinvasive disease, and no specific prophylaxis or treatment exists for infections by WNV and most related orthoflaviviruses. Here, we isolated and characterized antibodies from WNV convalescent individuals and report that neutralizing autoantibodies against type I interferons did not impair antiviral antibody development. Among the monoclonal antibodies with potent neutralizing activity against WNV that were identified, W010 targeted a distinct epitope within the envelope protein domain III (EDIII) an

COVID-19 convalescent plasma for B-cell depleted patients: a systematic review and individual patient data meta-analysis.

COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) obtained from recently recovered people is safe and effective against SARS-CoV-2. Currently available CCP is a "hybrid" product with antibodies from individuals who had both infection and vaccination (vaccine-boosted CCP). B-cell depleted patients are at risk of not producing antibodies after either infection or vaccination, hence conceivably among those who would benefit the most from CCP. We thus conducted a systematic review and individual participant data meta-analysis to assess characteristics associated with 60-day survival in B-cell depleted patients t

Oral Health Status and Sleep-Disordered Breathing in Post-Stroke Patients in Convalescent Rehabilitation Wards: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: A bidirectional relationship exists between sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and stroke. Post-stroke patients have worse oral health status. OBJECTIVES: Post-stroke patients with worse SDB would also have worse oral health status. METHODS: Post-stroke patients in convalescent rehabilitation wards were enrolled in this study. An overnight sleep test using WatchPAT to measure the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) was conducted. Each oral health assessment tool (OHAT) score between three groups divided by SDB severity was compared, and binary logistic regression analysis was used to assess

Recurrent SARS-CoV-2 mutations at Spike D796 evade antibodies from pre-Omicron convalescent and vaccinated subjects.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) lineages of the Omicron variant rapidly became dominant in early 2022 and frequently cause human infections despite vaccination or prior infection with other variants. In addition to antibody-evading mutations in the receptor-binding domain, Omicron features amino acid mutations elsewhere in the Spike protein; however, their effects generally remain ill defined. The Spike D796Y substitution is present in all Omicron sub-variants and occurs at the same site as a mutation (D796H) selected during viral evolution in a chronically infecte

Influence of Local Vibration Therapy on the Mental State, Neurological Function, and Quality of Life of Convalescing Patients With Spinal Cord Injury.

CONTEXT: The clinical postoperative recovery of patients with a spinal cord injury (SCI) is relatively long. Good self-efficacy can help patients actively cooperate with treatment and rehabilitation and improve their functional recovery and QoL. Local vibration stimulation has emerged as a potential nondrug therapy for SCI patients. However, the use of local vibration therapy for SCI patients is still rare, and its efficacy isn't clear yet. OBJECTIVE: The study intended to analyze the combined effects of local vibration therapy and self-efficacy training on the psychological state and neurolo

Subcutaneous Emphysema Complicating the Convalescent Stage of Measles in a Malnourished Indigent Child: A Case Report From North-Western Nigeria.

Measles is a highly infectious, vaccine-preventable viral disease that runs a devastating course in developing countries due to its association with malnutrition and poor immunization coverage. Subcutaneous emphysema (SE) is a rare complication of measles that can be challenging to manage and may portend poor outcomes if untreated. We present a case of a two-year-old unimmunized rural dweller who presented with facial, neck, and chest swellings three days after being managed for measles exanthem from a referral hospital. Clinical findings were consistent with massive SE comorbid with malnutrit

High-titer convalescent plasma plus nirmatrelvir/ritonavir treatment for non-resolving COVID-19 in six immunocompromised patients.

OBJECTIVES: Immunocompromised patients have an increased risk of severe or prolonged COVID-19. Currently available drugs are registered to treat COVID-19 during the first 5 to 7 days after symptom onset. Data on the effectivity in immunocompromised patients with chronic non-resolving COVID-19 are urgently needed. Here, we report the outcome of patients treated with nirmatrelvir/ritonavir together with high-titer convalescent plasma (CP) in six immunocompromised patients with non-resolving COVID-19. METHODS: Immunocompromised patients with persisting COVID-19 (positive PCR with Ct values <30 f

SARS-CoV-2-Specific IgG and IgA response in maternal blood and breastmilk of vaccinated naïve and convalescent lactating participants.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown the presence of SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies in the milk of breastfeeding mothers vaccinated with mRNA and convalescent. However, limited information is available in lactating women receiving other vaccine platforms used in developing countries, such as the inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine BBIBP-CorV (Sinopharm) and the non-replicating adenovirus vaccines Sputnik V (Gamaleya Institute) and ChAdOx1-S (Oxford AstraZeneca). METHODS: Here, we evaluated anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG and IgA levels in both serum and milk samples using a longitudinal and a cross-sectional

Convalescent Plasma Therapy, Therapeutic Formulations of Repurposed Drugs in 20th Century Epidemics against COVID-19: A Systematic Review.

Coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19) represents one of the largest pandemics the world has faced, and it is producing a global health crisis. To date, the availability of drugs to treat COVID-19 infections remains limited to supportive care although therapeutic options are being explored. Some of them are old strategies for treating infectious diseases. convalescent plasma (CP) therapy has been used successfully in other viral outbreaks in the 20th century. In this study, we systematically evaluated the effect and safety of CP therapy on hospitalized COVID-19 patients. A structured search was c

Analysis of anti-SARS-CoV-2 Omicron-neutralizing antibody titers in different vaccinated and unvaccinated convalescent plasma sources.

The latest SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern Omicron, with its immune escape from therapeutic anti-Spike monoclonal antibodies and WA-1 vaccine-elicited sera, demonstrates the continued relevance of COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) therapies. Lessons learnt from previous usage of CCP suggests focusing on early outpatients and immunocompromised recipients, with high neutralizing antibody titer units. Here, we systematically review Omicron-neutralizing plasma activity data, and report that approximately 47% (424/902) of CCP samples from unvaccinated pre-Omicron donors neutralizes Omicron BA.1 with

Early Treatment with Monoclonal Antibodies or Convalescent Plasma Reduces Mortality in Non-Vaccinated COVID-19 High-Risk Patients.

Vulnerable patients such as immunosuppressed or elderly patients are at high risk for a severe course of COVID-19 upon SARS-CoV-2 infection. Immunotherapy with SARS-CoV-2 specific monoclonal antibodies (mAb) or convalescent plasma represents a considerable treatment option to protect these patients from a severe or lethal course of infection. However, monoclonal antibodies are not always available or less effective against emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants. Convalescent plasma is more commonly available and may represent a good treatment alternative in low-income countries. We retrospectively evalu

[Research on characteristics of brain functional network in stroke patients during convalescent period under transcranial direct current stimulation].

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is an emerging non-invasive brain stimulation technique. However, the rehabilitation effect of tDCS on stroke disease is unclear. In this paper, based on electroencephalogram (EEG) and complex network analysis methods, the effect of tDCS on brain function network of stroke patients during rehabilitation was investigated. The resting state EEG signals of 31 stroke rehabilitation patients were collected and divided into stimulation group (16 cases) and control group (15 cases). The Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated between the channel

Highly Neutralizing COVID-19 Convalescent Plasmas Potently Block SARS-CoV-2 Replication and Pneumonia in Syrian Hamsters.

Despite various attempts to treat severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-infected patients with COVID-19 convalescent plasmas, neither appropriate approach nor clinical utility has been established. We examined the efficacy of administration of highly neutralizing COVID-19 convalescent plasma (hn-plasmas) and such plasma-derived IgG administration using the Syrian hamster COVID-19 model. Two hn-plasmas, which were in the best 1% of 340 neutralizing activity-determined convalescent plasmas, were intraperitoneally administered to SARS-CoV-2-infected hamsters, resulting in a
