Incentivized collaborative care to disseminate and enhance contingency-management services.

Contingency management is especially effective in supporting medication adherence and drug abstinence among people with opioid use disorder. However, the incorporation of contingency management into clinical practice has been slow. The present study was designed to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and usability of incentives for providers as a means of accelerating collaborative care with contingency management. Thirteen buprenorphine prescribers served as participants in a nonexperimental study. The prescribers who referred patients to a contingency-management service received monetar

A collaborative approach to adopting/adapting guidelines - The Australian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for the early years (Birth to 5 years): an integration of physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep.

BACKGROUND: In 2017, the Australian Government funded the update of the National Physical Activity Recommendations for Children 0-5 years, with the intention that they be an integration of movement behaviours across the 24-h period. The benefit for Australia was that it could leverage research in Canada in the development of their 24-h guidelines for the early years. Concurrently, the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) working group published a model to produce guidelines based on adoption, adaption and/or de novo development using the GRADE evidence-to-d

Evaluating the impact of conflict resolution on urban children's violence-related attitudes and behaviors in New Haven, Connecticut, through a community-academic partnership.

Numerous schools are implementing youth violence prevention interventions aimed at enhancing conflict resolution skills without evaluating their effectiveness. Consequently, we formed a community-academic partnership between a New Haven community-based organization and Yale's School of Public Health and Prevention Research Center to examine the impact of an ongoing conflict resolution curriculum in New Haven elementary schools, which had yet to be evaluated. Throughout the 2007-08 school year, 191 children in three schools participated in a universal conflict resolution intervention. We used a

Neighborhood cohesion as a buffer against hostile maternal parenting.

This study explored the moderating effects of children's neighborhoods on the link between hostile parenting and externalizing behavior. Participants were 1st- or 2nd-grade children in an urban northeastern community. Children were administered the Parenting and Neighborhood scales of the Child Puppet Interview, and mothers completed questionnaires on neighborhood quality and parenting practices. Census tract measures of neighborhood quality and teachers' reports of children's externalizing behavior also were obtained. Results indicated that children's and mothers' perceptions of neighborhood

Psychological aspects in paediatric dentistry: parental presence.

AIM: The scope of the present study has been the analysis of the main psychological approaches used during a first dental visit of a child to gain the necessary collaboration, focusing on the influence of parental presence during the visit. METHODS: The study was conducted on a group of 200 children divided into two sub-groups. In Group I the child was seen without the parent's presence and in Group II the parent was present throughout the visit. Assessment of behaviour was by a simple 'co-operative' or 'non-cooperative' in achieving a dental examination and prophylaxis. Statistical analysis

Propensity to Punish in High Psychopathy may Promote Cooperation: Human and Computer Prisoner Dilemma Experiments.

We tested the adaptive hypothesis of psychopathy in human and computer Prisoner Dilemma (PD) matches. From a cohort of 448 male undergraduates who completed the Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy Scale (LSRP), 31 high psychopathic (PP) and 29 low PP students, sampled from upper and lower quartiles of the cohort, played a 40-round PD match in which real money was at stake. The human matches were of three kinds: Low PP versus Low PP, Low PP versus High PP, and High PP versus High PP. In computer simulations, the empirical defection probabilities from High and Low PP human players were entered in a

Compulsive Buying Behavior: Clinical Comparison with Other Behavioral Addictions.

Compulsive buying behavior (CBB) has been recognized as a prevalent mental health disorder, yet its categorization into classification systems remains unsettled. The objective of this study was to assess the sociodemographic and clinic variables related to the CBB phenotype compared to other behavioral addictions. Three thousand three hundred and twenty four treatment-seeking patients were classified in five groups: CBB, sexual addiction, Internet gaming disorder, Internet addiction, and gambling disorder. CBB was characterized by a higher proportion of women, higher levels of psychopathology,

Addiction Research Consortium: Losing and regaining control over drug intake (ReCoDe)-From trajectories to mechanisms and interventions.

One of the major risk factors for global death and disability is alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug use. While there is increasing knowledge with respect to individual factors promoting the initiation and maintenance of substance use disorders (SUDs), disease trajectories involved in losing and regaining control over drug intake (ReCoDe) are still not well described. Our newly formed German Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) on ReCoDe has an interdisciplinary approach funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) with a 12-year perspective. The main goals of our research consortium are (i) t

Cortisol mediates cleaner wrasse switch from cooperation to cheating and tactical deception.

Recent empirical research, mostly done on humans, recognizes that individuals' physiological state affects levels of cooperation. An individual's internal state may affect the payoffs of behavioural alternatives, which in turn could influence the decision to either cooperate or to defect. However, little is known about the physiology underlying condition dependent cooperation. Here, we demonstrate that shifts in cortisol levels affect levels of cooperation in wild cleaner wrasse Labroides dimidiatus. These cleaners cooperate by removing ectoparasites from visiting 'client' reef fishes but pref

Diagnostic efficiency of symptoms for oppositional defiant disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

We examined the diagnostic efficiency of symptoms for experimentally diagnosed oppositional defiant disorder (OD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and for their differential diagnosis, in a nonreferred sample. More specifically, we used four conditional probability indices--positive predictive power, negative predictive power, sensitivity, and specificity--in an attempt to evaluate the diagnostic efficiency of these symptoms. Teacher ratings of OD and ADHD symptoms were gathered on 102 boys, ages 8 to 12. On average, ADHD symptoms were as useful as OD symptoms as exclusion

Comparison of chloral hydrate-hydroxyzine with and without meperidine for management of the difficult pediatric patient.

This study attempted to examine the impact of low doses of meperidine on the effectiveness of two doses of CH for management of highly resistive young pediatric dental patients. The results suggest patient manageability was enhanced by the addition of oral meperidine. As an alternative to a parenteral technique or general anesthetic, the clinician may wish to consider this regimen after having experienced failure of CH either alone, or in combination with an antiemetic, to produce an adequate level of sedation. The extent to which application of physical restraint is considered necessary or ac

Cooperation, Trust, and Antagonism: How Public Goods Are Promoted.

One of the most continually vexing problems in society is the variability with which citizens support endeavors that are designed to help a great number of people. In this article, we examine the twin roles of cooperative and antagonistic behavior in this variability. We find that each plays an important role, though their contributions are, understandably, at odds. It is this opposition that produces seeming unpredictability in citizen response to collective need. In fact, we suggest that careful consideration of the research allows one to often predict when efforts to provide a collectively

Compensatory and impaired trust updating in mild cognitive impairment: Evidence from computational modeling and fMRI.

Trust dynamics, how trust is formed, maintained, and adjusted, are essential to interpersonal functioning. Older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are known to exhibit social vulnerabilities, but the dynamic updating of trust during social interactions and its neural basis in this population remain unclear. Here, we combined computational modeling with task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate trust updating in 39 older adults with MCI (mean age = 67.8 years) compared to 45 normal healthy controls (NHC, mean age = 67.2 years). At the behavioral level, MCI

Structural basis of nearest-neighbor cooperativity in the ring-shaped gene regulatory protein TRAP from protein engineering and cryo-EM.

The homo-dodecameric ring-shaped trp RNA binding attenuation protein (TRAP) from Alkalihalobacillus halodurans (Aha) binds up to twelve tryptophan ligands (Trp) and becomes activated to bind a specific sequence in the 5' leader region of the trp operon mRNA, thereby downregulating biosynthesis of Trp. Thermodynamic measurements of Trp binding have revealed a range of cooperative behavior for different TRAP variants, even if the averaged apparent affinities for Trp have been found to be similar. Proximity between the ligand binding sites, and the ligand-coupled disorder-to-order transition has …

Effects of maternal mood on mother-son interaction patterns.

This study evaluated the impact of maternal mood on mother-son interaction patterns. Forty boys between the ages of 46 and 72 months and their mothers participated. A within-subject experimental design was employed so that all mothers participated in both a positive and a negative mood induction. Observations of mother-son interactions were conducted immediately following the mood inductions. During the negative mood condition, mothers issued fewer positive statements toward their children and engaged in less general verbal interaction. In addition, children were less complaint with maternal c

The pathophysiology, medical management and dental implications of fragile X, Rett, and Prader-Willi syndromes.

Fragile X, Rett, and Prader-Willi syndromes are a group of inherited disorders that often present with varying degrees of mental retardation and challenging behaviors. Dentists caring for individuals with these disorders must be familiar with the manifestations of these diseases and their associated features so they can garner the maximum level of cooperation from the patient. They must also be familiar with the medications (anticonvulsants, antihypertensives, antidepressants, antipsychotics, and central nervous system stimulants) used to treat the associated behaviors, because many of these p

Male-Male Greeting Behavior Observed in Chacma Baboons (Papio ursinus griseipes) in Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique.

OBJECTIVES: Male-male greetings have been described across many primate species, with varying forms and functions. Within Papio, their study has been of particular interest as baboons show variation in greeting, male-male cooperation, philopatry, and social systems. The function of greetings in Papio may differ by species, including facilitating cooperative behavior, negotiating rank, and maintaining social relationships. Chacma baboons, a species that generally exhibits limited to no coalition formation and low male-male tolerance, remain understudied regarding their male-male greeting behavi…

The Role of Behavioral Management in Enhancing Clinical Care and Efficiency, Minimizing Social Disruption, and Promoting Welfare in Captive Primates.

Medical procedures necessary for routine care can induce stress in both the veterinary and human clinical situations. In the research environment, nonhuman primates undergo procedures like physical examination, blood sampling, and intravenous drug or fluid administration either as a part of routine veterinary care or during the modeling of clinical disease and interventions under study. Behavioral management techniques, such as training for cooperation, allow caregivers to train primates to voluntarily engage in various medical procedures. This approach reduces stress and anxiety associated wi
