Familial Exudative Vitreoretinopathy With Neurodevelopmental Delay and Hypoplasia of the Corpus Callosum.

A 2-year-old child was referred to the authors' pediatric retina service for bilateral retinal folds, strabismus, and psychomotor retardation, as well as marked thinning of the corpus callosum. Family history was unremarkable and genetic testing revealed a previously undescribed mutation in the LRP5 gene. Widefield fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography were used to image the retinal fundus. The authors' case suggests a correlation between LRP5 and neurological development, since its variants may lead to a syndromic condition characterized…

Agenesis of the corpus callosum: a rare association with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a rare congenital disorder of connective tissues which involves the skin and musculoskeletal system. There are also some reports for the involvement of the central and peripheral nervous systems. We want to present a very rare coassociation of EDS, spondylolisthesis, and Agenesis of the corpus callosum in an Iranian lady.

Attention and corpus callosum volumes in individuals with mucopolysaccharidosis type I.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research suggests attention and white matter (WM) abnormalities in individuals with mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I); this cross-sectional comparison is one of the first to examine the relationship of WM structural abnormalities as measured by corpus callosum (CC) volumes with attention scores to evaluate this relationship in a larger sample of patients with MPS I. METHODS: Volumetric MRI data and performance on a computerized measure of sustained attention were compared for 18 participants with the severe form of MPS I (MPS IH), 18 participants with the attenuated for…

Corpus callosum shape and morphology in youth across the psychosis Spectrum.

The corpus callosum is the largest white matter tract in the human brain connecting and coordinating homologous regions of the right and left hemispheres and has been strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of psychosis. We investigated corpus callosum morphology in a large community cohort of 917 individuals (aged 8-21), including 267 endorsing subsyndromal or threshold psychotic symptoms (207 on the psychosis spectrum and 60 with limited psychosis based on previously published criteria) and 650 non-psychotic volunteers. We used a highly reliable and previously published algorithm to automati…

The use of diffusion tractography to characterize a corpus callosum malformation in a dog.

INTRODUCTION: The pathogenesis of corpus callosum malformations (CCM) is not well defined in the dog because of inherent limitations of structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to evaluate the white matter. We used the advanced neuroimaging technique of tractography to virtually dissect the white matter projections in a dog with a CCM and in a normal control dog. METHODS: A 9-month-old male Coonhound that had a previous structural MRI diagnosis of CCM and a normal control dog underwent anesthesia and 3-Tesla MRI. Diffusion-tensor imaging and 3D T1-weighted and 2D T2-weighted sequences were…

Agenesis of the corpus callosum with interhemispheric cyst: clinical implications and outcome.

We describe two cases of agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) with interhemispheric cyst (IHC). Case 1: a male infant was born at 36 weeks gestation with a history of second trimester fetal ultrasound (US) scan and MRI showing ACC with IHC. His head circumference at birth and 5 months was at 90th centile. He developed infantile spasm and electroencephalogram showed hypsarrhythmia at 5 months of age. Seizures were controlled. He is under evaluation for surgical treatment. Case 2: ACC with a midline cyst was reported in the midtrimester US scan of a male infant. Subsequent fetal scans showed in…

Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum and Aicardi Syndrome: A Neuroimaging and Clinical Comparison.

BACKGROUND: Agenesis of the corpus callosum can occur in individuals with epilepsy, either in isolation or as part of various neurological conditions, such as Aicardi syndrome. In this study, we evaluated the clinical and neuroradiological differences between children with nonsyndromic agenesis of the corpus callosum and those with Aicardi syndrome. METHODS: We evaluated 31 children with epilepsy and agenesis of the corpus callosum (11 males, 20 females), 14 of whom had Aicardi syndrome (all females). We compared their clinical evaluations, radiological and electrophysiological findings, trea…

Neurodevelopmental outcome in prenatally diagnosed isolated agenesis of the corpus callosum.

UNLABELLED: Neurodevelopmental outcome in children with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) is correlated with the presence or absence of associated brain abnormalities. Indeed, neurodevelopmental outcome shows severe disabilities when the ACC is not isolated whereas in isolated forms, the neurologic development is mainly normal. Contrary to data in several published studies, the prognosis remains uncertain even in isolated forms, which may lead in France to medical termination of pregnancy. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate long-term neurodevelopmental outcome in children with prenatally diagnosed is…

Microsurgical treatment for arteriovenous malformation of the corpus callosum and choroidal fissure.

The management of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the corpus callosum and choroidal fissure is challenging because they commonly receive arterial feeders from the anterior and posterior circulation, and drain to deep veins. In this video the authors present the case of a 20-year-old man who presented with acute onset of headache, loss of consciousness, and nuchal rigidity. Computed tomography, MRI, and cerebral angiography performed in tandem revealed a ruptured, large, Grade IV AVM of the corpus callosum and choroidal fissure with two groups of arterial feeders: one from the pericallosa…

MKS1 mutations cause Joubert syndrome with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Joubert syndrome (JS) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous ciliopathy characterized by episodic hyperpnea and apnea, hypotonia, ataxia, cognitive impairment and ocular motor apraxia. The "molar tooth sign" is pathognomonic of this condition. Mutations in the MKS1 gene are a major cause of Meckel-Gruber syndrome (MKS), the most common form of syndromic neural tube defects, frequently resulting in perinatal lethality. We present the phenotype and genotype of a child with severe JS and agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC). In our patient, a next generation sequencing (NGS) approach reve…

Bilateral cleft lip and palate, hypertelorism with agenesis of corpus callosum.

Agenesis of corpus callosum (ACC) can have various development abnormalities spectrum. These include delay in milestones to complex neuropsychiatric manifestations. Following case report highlights the case of a young infant presenting with associated features including bilateral cleft lip and palate and hypertelorism. The kid was refused treatment at several centers owing to the central nervous system abnormality. This case reports highlight the ACC as a comorbid diagnosis in cleft lip and palate patient with hypertelorism perhaps owing to ignorance and fear of this apparently innocuous conge…

Transient lesion in the splenium of the corpus callosum due to rotavirus infection.

Transient signal changes in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the splenium of the corpus callosum (SCC) can result from many different reasons, including encephalitis and encephalopathy caused by infection, seizures, metabolic disorders and asphyxia. We report a case of a 6-year-old Polish girl with rotavirus infection demonstrating a reversible SCC lesion on diffusion-weighted MRI images. She presented six episodes of generalized tonic seizures with mild acute gastroenteritis. Stool test for rotavirus antigen was positive. At the time of admission imaging showed the hyperintense region in T…

Haploinsufficiency of ZNF238 is associated with corpus callosum abnormalities in 1q44 deletions.

A variety of candidate genes have been proposed to cause corpus callosum abnormalities (CCAs) in patients with terminal chromosome 1q deletions. Recent data excluded AKT3 and implicated ZNF238 and/or CEP170 as genes causative of corpus callosum anomalies in patients with 1q43-1q44 deletions. We report on a girl with dysmorphic features, seizures beginning in infancy, hypotonia, marked developmental delay, and dysgenesis of the corpus callosum. Chromosomal microarray analysis detected a de novo 1.47 Mb deletion at 1q44. The deleted interval encompasses the ZNF238 gene but not the CEP170 or AKT3…

Agenesis of the corpus callosum: classifying functional manifestations with the ICF-CY.

PURPOSE: Agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) is a congenital condition in which the corpus callosum fails to develop fully. In the literature, ACC has been broadly conceptualized and inconsistently described. This article demonstrates how the universal language of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health-Children and Youth can increase the specificity with which researchers and clinicians describe the variable manifestations of ACC. METHODS: The database for this article was based on a review of 83 studies on developmental and neuropsychological manifestations …
