In this study thymol (THY) and carvacrol (CAR), two monoterpenic phenol produced by various aromatic plants, was tested for their antibacterial and efflux pump inhibitors potencies against a panel of clinical and foodborne pathogenes. Our results demonstrated a substantial susceptibility of the tested bacteria toward THY and CAR. Especially, THY displayed a strong inhibitory activity (MIC's values ranged from 32 to 64 μg/mL) against the majority of the tested strains compared to CAR. Moreover, a significant reduction in MIC's of TET and benzalkonium chloride (QAC) were noticed when tested in c

Six pure phenolic compounds (hydroquinone, thymol, carvacrol, butylated hydroxyanisole, gallic acid, and octyl gallate) were tested for their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) against several strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from dairy and meat products. In addition, S. aureus reference strains (American Type Culture Collection) for antimicrobial studies and/or isolated from human infections and outbreaks of food poisoning were included in the study. Of the compounds tested, octyl gallate and hydroquinone were the most effective agains

Vasculogenic mimicry (VM) contributes significantly to tumor aggressiveness and resistance to anti-angiogenic therapies. Simultaneous inhibition of both angiogenesis and VM represents a promising strategy to improve therapeutic outcomes in aggressive cancers, such as triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), which responds poorly to anti-angiogenic therapies. In this study, we identified carvacrol, a natural monoterpenoid phenol widely used as a food additive, as a dual inhibitor of angiogenesis and VM in TNBC. Carvacrol preferentially inhibited angiogenesis in endothelial cells (ECs) and VM in TN

Mixed vaginitis due to bacterial vaginosis (BV) and vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is the most prevalent form and presents a significant therapeutic challenge globally. Since, the administration of monotherapy leads to subsequent recurrent infections, synergistic therapy that completely eradicates both pathogens is of dire need to manage mixed vaginities scenario and to prevent its recurrence. The current investigation was focused on exploring the synergistic inhibitory efficacy of phytochemicals against the virulence traits of individual and mixed species of C. albicans and G. vaginalis in vi

OBJECTIVE: The increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections led to identify alternative strategies for a novel therapeutic approach. In this study, we synthesized ten carvacrol codrugs - obtained linking the carvacrol hydroxyl group to the carboxyl moiety of sulphur-containing amino acids via an ester bond - to develop novel compounds with improved antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities and reduced toxicity respect to carvacrol alone.
METHOD: All carvacrol codrugs were screened against a representative panel of Gram positive (S. aureus and S. epidermidis), Gram negativ

Candida albicans biofilms are a major cause of device-associated infections and treatment failure due to high antifungal tolerance. Here, we evaluated the synergistic antibiofilm activity of quercetin and carvacrol against a catheter-derived C. albicans isolate (CRL7) and delineated the underlying cellular and structure-based mechanisms. Combination therapy markedly enhanced antifungal potency, reducing MICs from 200 μg/mL (carvacrol) and 240 μg/mL (quercetin) to 17 μg/mL and 10.9 μg/mL, respectively (FICI = 0.13), indicating strong synergy. The quercetin-carvacrol combination reduced biofilm

Commercial aromatic herbs sold under the names thyme and oregano may encompass heterogeneous plant materials, making chemical-profile screening important even when botanical identity is unknown. This study characterized 110 commercial products marketed in Türkiye and evaluated whether portable near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy could predict chemical-profile classes derived independently from GC-FID/MS data. Commercial labels were recorded but were not treated as verified species identities. Essential oils were measured in technical duplicate for 23 volatile compounds; replicate means were subje
