Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have garnered attention in research for their potential as biochemical transporters and immune modulators, crucial for regulating the host immune system. The present study was conducted to isolate and characterize EVs from Gram negative bacteria Edwardsiella piscicida (EpEVs) and investigate their proteomic profile and immune responses. Isolation of EpEVs was carried out using ultracentrifugation method. Transmission electron microscopy results confirmed the spherical shape of EpEVs. The average size and zeta potential were 85.3 ± 1.8 nm and -8.28 ± 0.41 mV, respec

A novel virus from moribund European chub (Squalius cephalus) was isolated on epithelioma papulosum cyprini (EPC) cells. Transmission electron microscopic examination revealed abundant non-enveloped, hexagonal virus particles in the cytoplasm of infected EPC cells consistent with an iridovirus. Illumina MiSeq sequence data enabled the assembly and annotation of the full genome (128,216 bp encoding 108 open reading frames) of the suspected iridovirus. Maximum Likelihood phylogenetic analyses based on 25 iridovirus core genes supported the European chub iridovirus (ECIV) as being the sister spec

The world-class Alaskan Bristol Bay salmon fishery and vast deposits of copper (Cu) and other metals in the watershed warrant further investigation into the potential toxicity of Cu to salmonids under the low water-hardness conditions that occur in the watershed. Therefore we investigated the acute toxicity of Cu to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) in low-hardness water (∼ 30 mg/L as CaCO3 ) formulated in the laboratory and collected from the Bristol Bay watershed. The median lethal concentration (LC50) for rainbow trout exposed to Cu in low-hardnes

Mercury (Hg) is a ubiquitous environmental contaminant and potent neurotoxin, which may be transformed by bacteria in aquatic ecosystems to methylmercury (MeHg), an organic form which bioaccumulates and biomagnifies. Consequently, long-lived organisms at the top of the food web are at risk of dietary MeHg exposure, which can be actively transferred from mother to offspring. Exposure during neurodevelopment can lead to serious, irreversible neurological dysfunction, associated with a variety of cognitive and motor abnormalities. At low dietary concentrations, MeHg exposure has been associated w

The purposes of this study are to investigate the concentration of mercury in edible muscle tissues of two popular edible fish species: the Shirbot (Barbus grypus) and Hemri (Barbus luteus), from the Maroon River, Khuzestan Province, Iran, and to assess the risk of their toxicity on human health. We collected 20 samples of each species from the river, and after biometry and determination of their age and sex, concentration of total mercury (assumed to be about 100% methylmercury) was measured. For B. grypus, mercury averaged 0.16 ± 0.02 μg g(-1) wet weight, and for B. luteus, it averaged 0.08

Fish pedicure has become a popular cosmetic procedure involving immersion of the feet in a tank with freshwater fish (Garra rufa) that nibble off dead skin. There are concerns about the potential transmission of pathogens, but no cases of infections after this procedure have been published so far. We present a patient who developed foot infection with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) after fish pedicure.

Arsenic is a naturally occurring, highly toxic environmental pollutant. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy is a non-disturbing technique which provides quantitative information about the molecular composition of biological samples. The aim of this work is to study the compositional and structural changes at the molecular level occurring in gill tissues of Labeo rohita fingerlings due to arsenic exposure for various exposure periods by using FT-IR spectroscopic technique. The results of the present study suggest that arsenic exposure causes significant changes on the major biochemi

The presence of many human pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment is now a worldwide concern, yet little is known of the chronic effects that these bioactive substances may be having on aquatic organisms. Propranolol, a non-specific beta adrenoreceptor blocker (beta-blocker), is used to treat high blood pressure and heart disease in humans. Propranolol has been found in surface waters worldwide at concentrations ranging from 12 to 590ng/L. To test the potential for ecologically relevant effects in fish in receiving waters, short-term (21 days) adult reproduction studies were conducted, in

In Oregon's Willamette River Basin, health advisories currently limit consumption of fish that have accumulated methylmercury to levels posing a potential health risk for humans. Under the Clean Water Act, these advisories represent an impairment of the beneficial use of fish consumption and create the requirement for a mercury total maximum daily load. A percent load reduction for total mercury was determined by comparing mercury levels in surface water to a water column guidance value linked to the protection of specified beneficial uses. In this case study, we discuss how probabilistic (Mon

Opisthorchis viverrini is a food borne trematode, important because of the sheer numbers of people infected and its serious morbidities such as hepatobiliary diseases and cholangiocarcinoma (CHCA). Although infections are identified throughout Southeast Asia, the epi-center is northeast Thailand, where high prevalence coexists with a high incidence of CHCA. In this review, we present the basic population features and the factors influencing transmission between the different hosts.

Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were randomly assigned to one of the following dietary exposure conditions: lead (Pb) solvent (2% nitric acid), meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) solvent (0.1 N NaOH), Pb, DMSA, Pb followed by Pb solvent, or Pb followed by DMSA. Medulla, cerebellum, and optic tectum homogenates were analyzed for dopamine (DA), homovanillic acid (HVA), and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC). DA levels in all brain regions tended to be highest for trout exposed to dietary Pb followed by dietary DMSA. DA levels were elevated for trout exposed to dietary DMSA and Pb fo

Cobaltous-lysine applied to the goldfish optic nerve backfilled retinal ganglion cells and their axons. Confined to the ventronasal and ventrotemporal retina was a small population of retinal ganglion cells whose axons traveled dorsally and parallel to the retinal margin. On reaching the boundary between dorsal and ventral retina, the axons arched, joined radially oriented bundles of axons, and traveled toward the optic disk. Control studies showed that the axons came from retinal ganglion cells rather than from retinopetal cells. The somatic area of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) with circumfe

Ultrastructural morphometry was used to test firstly, whether regenerating optic axons in goldfish tectum will form connections in adjacent denervated foreign territory and secondly, whether intact optic axons will collaterally sprout to innervate this territory. The stratum fibrosum marginale of the tectum was partially denervated by removing the torus longitudinalis and cutting the tectal commissure. Optic axons do not normally synapse in this layer. Thirty days after partial denervation and optic tract section the numbers of normal synapses in a micron 2 column through the stratum fibrosum

Synthetic polyester microfibers (PES-MFs) are emerging contaminants that pose a serious risk to aquatic organisms. This study evaluated the toxicological effects of PES-MFs on the freshwater Juvenile fish Labeo rohita, which were exposed for 21 days to environmentally relevant concentrations. Toxicity was assessed through ingestion rates, behavioural response, and biochemical biomarkers, including oxidative stress enzymes (SOD, CAT, LPO, GPx, GSH), and brain Acetylcholinesterase (AchE). Results revealed significant physiological stress, with elevated LPO and enzymatic imbalances in the gills a

Sodium butyrate (SB) is gaining attention as a dietary supplement in aquaculture because of its potential benefits for fish health and growth. This research was conducted to assess the impacts of SB concentrations on the growth, antioxidant status, digestive enzyme activities, gut morphology, hepatic enzyme activities and survival against Aeromonas hydrophila in rohu (Labeo rohita). For this purpose, SB was supplemented at 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 g/kg in the basal diet (30.16% crude protein). Thirty acclimatized fingerlings (15.15 ± 0.03 g) were distributed in each of 15 glass aquaria and f

Aquatic herbicides are commonly used to control a variety of non-native plants. One common active ingredient used in commercial herbicide formulations globally is 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). Though 2,4-D is used in aquatic ecosystems, no studies have investigated cellular, biochemical, and transcriptional effects or mechanisms of 2,4-D exposure on fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) throughout juvenile development. Herein, we aim to evaluate the impacts of chronic ecologically relevant 2,4-D exposure on reproductive systems of fathead minnow. Juvenile fathead minnows were exposed

BACKGROUND: Argulosis, caused by Argulus, is a significant parasitic disease affecting freshwater aquaculture, leading to severe economic losses and compromised fish health. This study investigates the antiparasitic efficacy of green-synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) synthesized using Bauhinia racemosa leaf extract against A. siamensis in Labeo rohita. The nanoparticles exhibited a spherical morphology with an average size of 157.60 ± 41.59 nm and a zeta potential of -11.3 mV, ensuring moderate stability.
RESULT: The in vivo trial confirmed the antiparasitic efficacy of biogenic IO

Fish nocardiosis is a chronic systemic granulomatous disease, and Nocardia seriolae is the main pathogen. The pathogenesis and virulence factors of N. seriolae are not fully understood. Secreted superoxide dismutase (SOD) may be a virulence factor found by a comparative bioinformatics analysis of the whole genome sequence of N. seriolae and the virulence factor database (VFDB). In order to determine the subcellular localization and study the preliminary function of SOD from N. seriolae (NsSOD), gene cloning, secreted protein identification, subcellular localization in fish cells, and apoptosis

Many endemic fish species are threatened with extinction. Conservation strategies and the restoration of endemic fish after extinction must therefore be investigated. Although sperm cryopreservation is indispensable for the conservation of endangered fishes, the limited number of mature fish and limited availability (volume and period) of sperm from small endemic fish hinders the optimization and practical use of this material. In this report, we demonstrate the in vitro differentiation of fertile sperm from cryopreserved spermatogonia of juveniles of the endangered small cyprinid honmoroko (G
