There is little agreement in the ophthalmic literature on the optimum length of time that silicone tubes should be left in place after lacrimal intubation for the treatment of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Various authors have recommended leaving the tubes in for 3 to 6 months. The authors of this article believe this to be an excessive amount of time. Lacrimal probing, inferior turbinate fracture, and silicone intubation were performed in children ranging in age from 3 months to 5 years. The tubes were removed after 6 weeks in all cases. Resolution of epiphora and dacryocystitis w…

PURPOSE: We present a case of hemolacria, which emerged as an unusual mass in the lacrimal sac.
CASE REPORT: A nine-year-old girl presented with intermittent unilateral hemolacria and episodes of dacryocystitis with no further remarkable medical or surgical history. CT scan indicated the presence of well-defined calcified tissue enclosed within the lacrimal sac. Following external dacryocystorhinostomy, well-formed firm tissue resembling bony tissue was extracted and sent for pathological evaluation, along with biopsies from the lacrimal sac. Histopathological analysis revealed heterotopic bo…

Lacrimal drainage disorders, encompassing pathologies such as nasolacrimal duct obstruction, dacryocystitis, and lacrimal sac neoplasms, are prevalent ophthalmic conditions characterized by epiphora and recurrent infection. While surgical intervention remains the cornerstone of management, the integration of advanced imaging modalities has revolutionized the diagnostic and therapeutic paradigm for lacrimal drainage disorders. This review synthesizes recent advances in imaging techniques and their multidimensional applications in etiological identification, preoperative planning, intraoperative…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This study is a review of recent literature in the diagnosis and management of preseptal cellulitis, orbital cellulitis and dacryocystitis, including causative organisms, diagnosis and medical or surgical therapy and potential complications.
RECENT FINDINGS: Advances in vaccination against Haemophilus influenzae B have resulted in a shift in the most common causative organisms of preseptal and orbital cellulitis. Management of orbital cellulitis has been advanced by adjuvant corticosteroids, and subperiosteal abscess volumes of more than 1250 ml has been shown as predictive…

Endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is a widely accepted treatment option for epiphora and dacryocystitis. To elucidate the cause of treatment failure after surgery, we analyzed patients' characteristics and perioperative background in association with poor outcome. We analyzed 165 patients with 213 sides who had endoscopic DCR. The influence of age, duration of symptoms, occlusion site and stent insertion were analyzed. Symptoms were completely cured in 85.0% (181/213) sides. Higher age (≥65 years) and proximal obstruction were associated with a poor prognosis while stent insertion and dur…

Atrophic rhinitis (AR) is a chronic debilitating nasal mucosal disease predominantly prevalent in tropical countries. In the present case a … nic rhinosinusitis (CRS), local and systemic spread of infection, atrophic pharyngitis, laryngitis, dacryocystitis and nasal myiasis have been reported in literature. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of AR presenting with ethmoidal mucocele. A case of AR with CRS is to be treated with caution as it can lead to complications as it is …

Dacryolith is a concretion within the nasolacrimal system. Dacryoliths may cause intermittent epiphora without inflammation, or recurrent dacryocystitis may develop. In this report, we present two patients with dacryoliths. The first patient had presented with a complaint of swelling and epiphora and had been told that she had lacrimal canal obstruction. This patient was unaware of the cause of obliteration and was asymptomatic. The second patient complained of headache, eye swelling and inflammation; dacryolith was diagnosed by clinical examination and dacryocystography. Dacryoliths were dete…

BACKGROUND: Acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction is a common cause of epiphora. The absolute or partial blockage of the nasolacrimal duct occurs most frequently in middle-aged and elderly women. In addition to the troublesome symptom of epiphora, acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction is predominantly the underlying cause of both acute and chronic dacryocystitis.
METHODS: The primary eye care provider plays an essential role in the diagnosis and management of the patient with epiphora. The potentially serious ramifications of acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction demand a thorough understa…

PURPOSE: To investigate the microstructure of the lacrimal canaliculus and the characteristics of lacrimal canalicular diseases by 80-MHz ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM).
METHODS: This study included 33 participants: 20 normal subjects (40 eyes), 2 patients with chronic lacrimal canaliculitis (4 eyes), 10 patients with chronic dacryocystitis (16 eyes), and 1 patient with lacrimal punctum atresia (2 eyes). All participants underwent 80-MHz UBM; disease-specific features were noted.
RESULTS: On 80-MHz UBM of the lacrimal canaliculi (vertical section) in normal subjects, low echo of the lacrimal…

Background: Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a slowly progressive disease most often affecting older patients. Although CLL is typically identified on routine blood work, unique manifestations of the disease have been described both at the time of diagnosis and in the setting of indolent disease. Methods: We present on 3 CLL patients with previously stable oncologic disease who presented with orbital pathologies including dacryocystitis, epiphora, proptosis, and diplopia. Results: All 3 cases were found to have recurrences of CLL confirmed on pathology and were managed both surgically and…

Bacteria were isolated 68% of the time from the conjunctival sacs of 120 dogs with conjunctivitis, blepharitis, dacryocystitis, or corneal ulcerations. Coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus was the most frequently isolated organism (68%); when both eyes were affected, S aureus was recovered from 29% of the dogs; and in dogs with 1 eye affected, S aureus was isolated from 23% of the affected eyes and in 18% of the nonaffected eyes. Other organisms recovered from eyes were coagulase-negative Staphylococcus epidermidis (27%), beta-hemolytic streptococcus (19%), alpha-hemolytic Streptococcus (1…

A 42-years-old male presented with left medial canthal swelling, accompanied with only mild epiphora. There was no history of dacryocystitis, mid-facial trauma, surgery, or bloody tears. On examination, there was an immobile, subcutaneous, non-inflammatory mass below the medial canthal tendon. Lacrimal irrigation showed blockade at the nasolacrimal duct. A computerized axial tomography (CAT) scan revealed a non-enhancing, low-density, cystic lesion at the inferomedial margin of the orbit. There were no signs of bony erosion, consistent with idiopathic acquired dacryocystocele. The patient unde…

Nasolabial cysts are rare non-odontogenic cystic lesions representing around 0.7% of all maxillofacial cysts. They usually present as unilateral painless swellings, sometimes with epiphora and dacryocystitis as well as pain in cases of rapid growth or infection. We have reviewed the literature and present an extremely rare case of bilateral nasolabial cysts in a young Afro-Caribbean man presenting with chronic nasal blockage, epiphora and rhinorrhoea. We describe our successful surgical management using a sublabial approach for complete excision, leading to a disease-free outcome at 6 months f…

AIM: The aim of the study is to describe intracanalicular antibiotic ointment loading as a treatment option for canaliculitis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: It was an interventional prospective study. The study was conducted over a 3 year period from June 2015 to June 2018. All patients of canaliculitis managed with intracanalicular antibiotic ointment loading and with a minimum follow up of 3 months were included in the study. The antibiotic ointment was loaded into the canaliculus based on the antibiotic sensitivity of the material expressed out from the canaliculus. Patients' demographics, clinica
