[Computer tomography in the evaluation of the status of the ventricular system of the brain in hydrocephalic children].

The authors analysed computer-aided tomograms of 182 children of different age with occlusive and open forms of hydrocephalus in the progressive, subcompensated, and compensated stages. The main signs characteristic of the various forms of hydrocephalus and stages of its clinical course were revealed. The VBR and Evans indices and the indices of the anterior and posterior horns and medial fossa were calculated and analysed and their correlation determined. The regular features in the dilatation of various parts of ventricular system were determined according to the changes of these indices. In

Intrauterine ultrasound phenotyping, molecular characteristics, and postnatal follow-up of fetuses with the 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 microdeletion syndrome: a single-center, retrospective clinical study.

OBJECTIVES: The 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 microdeletion is associated with neurodevelopmental diseases. However, most studies on this microdeletion have focused on adults and children. Thus, in this study, we summarized the molecular characteristics of fetuses with the 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 microdeletion and their postnatal follow-up to guide prenatal diagnosis. METHODS: Ten thousand fetuses were retrospectively subjected to karyotype analysis and chromosome microarray analysis. RESULTS: Chromosome microarray analysis revealed that 37 (0.4%) of the 10,000 fetuses had 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 microdeletions. The frag

Prenatal Diagnosis of Central Nervous System Anomalies by High-Resolution Chromosomal Microarray Analysis.

The aims of this study were to evaluate the contribution of chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) in the prenatal diagnosis of fetuses with … ence (Fisher's exact test, P > 0.05). Pathogenic CNVs were detected most frequently in fetuses with Dandy-Walker syndrome (2/6, 33.3%) when compared with other types of neural malformations, and holoprosencephaly (2/7, 28.6%) ranked the second. CMA is valuable in prenatal genetic diagnosis of fetuses with CNS anomalies. It should be considered as part of prenatal diagn …

[The posterior cranium and its dysmorphisms].

The deformation of the posterior part of the skull (occipito-vertebral region) induced directly, occurs in numerous pathological situations. Its significance is frequently overlooked. Lesions of the cranial content, alterations of the lambdoid suture or other premature synostosis, abnormal constraint related to posture or to muscular activity can modify the posterior curvature of the skull, generally flattening it. The authors propose a classification based on three points: intracranial pathology, bone pathology and extrinsic pathology. Concerning intracranial pathology, alterations of the bra

A distinctive triad of malformations of the central nervous system in the Meckel-Gruber syndrome.

A distinct triad of central nervous system (CNS) malformations (prosencephalic dysgenesis, occipital exencephalocele and rhombic roof dysgenesis) was present in seven cases of the Meckel-Gruber syndrome examined at autopsy. We compared our findings with those previously described. Microcephaly, sloping forehead, posterior occipital exencephalocele, cerebellar hypoplasia, Chiari malformation, hydrocephalus, polymicrogyria, arhinencephaly, holoprosencephaly and anencephaly constituted a broad spectrum of the reported CNS anomalies. Few reports contained a comprehensive description of the observe

Mutated zinc finger protein of the cerebellum 1 leads to microcephaly, cortical malformation, callosal agenesis, cerebellar dysplasia, tethered cord and scoliosis.

Heterozygous gain of function mutations in the ZIC1 gene have been described with syndromic craniosynostosis, variable cerebral or cerebellar abnormalities and mild to moderate developmental delay. Deletion of chromosome 3q25.1 including both adjacent ZIC1 and ZIC4 genes have been described as a cause of variable cerebellar abnormalities including Dandy-Walker malformation. We report two siblings presenting with neonatal microcephaly, agenesis of the corpus callosum, brachycephaly with reduced volume of the posterior fossa, cerebellar and pons hypoplasia, scoliosis and tethered cord (closed ne

"Acquired" Dandy-Walker malformation and cerebellar hemorrhage: Usefulness of serial MRI.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Neuroimaging plays a fundamental role in the diagnosis of Dandy Walker malformation (DWM), a posterior fossa anomaly that is usually associated with genetic abnormalities, but may rarely be ascribed to acquired causes. Here, we report the clinical history and neuroimaging studies of a child with a complex cardiac malformation, developmental delay, and oculomotor anomalies whose neuroimaging findings were consistent with an acquired form of DWM. METHODS/RESULTS: Fetal MRI at gestational weeks 27 and 31 showed cerebellar and vermis hypoplasia and fourth ventricle enlargement

The role of ultrasonography in recognizing the cause of fetal cerebral ventriculomegaly.

Dilatation of the fetal cerebral ventricles (ventriculomegaly) is a generic sonographic sign common to several pathological entities carrying different prognoses. The main causes of fetal ventriculomegaly are aqueductal stenosis, Chiari II malformation, Dandy-Walker complex and agenesis of the corpus callosum. Ventriculomegaly is easily recognized by ultrasound by measuring the atrial width. This simple measure allows the recognition of mild forms of ventricular dilatation and is used as a screening method for ventriculomegaly. However, although the diagnosis of ventriculomegaly is easy, the p
