Audiological and genealogical examination of 658 patients with congenital deafness. All of them were citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan. It was found that 236 (35.8%) probands had a family history of blood relatives marriage with a high inbreeding coefficient (F=0.0105). Marriages between cousin sibs by a parallel type prevailed. Marriages between blood relatives promote a rise in homozygosis of the pathological recessive genes increasing the risk of beath of handicapped babies.

Authors highlight the difficulties of syndrome identification through reporting the first case of DOOR syndrome in Hungary (the 28th case worldwide). The awareness and appropriate weighing of the importance of vestigial nails (onychodystrophy) was crucial for the correct diagnosis. Based on the normal level of 2-oxoglutarate excretion, the patient can be categorized as type 2. This is associated with better survival, which does not mean a substantial difference in quality of life. Although, prenatal diagnosis is not possible at present, knowledge of the enzyme defect and detection of the reduc

Central deafness has been linked historically to bihemispheric involvement of the temporal lobe, with more recent findings suggesting that compromise of other cortical and subcortical structures can also result in this disorder. The present investigation extends our understanding of the potential anatomical correlates to central deafness by demonstrating that bilateral involvement of an auditory structure within the midbrain can additionally result in this condition. Our subject was a 21-year-old male with a subarachnoid bleed affecting both inferior colliculi. Significant auditory deficits we…

Since 1970 a progressive aging of the world population, mainly in the most developed countries, has been observed. Spain could have, around 2050, the most aged human population of the world. Therefore, scientist show an increasing interest on the study of the aging-related pathologies (i.e. deafness linked to aging process: presbycusis). The deep analysis of the presbycusis physiopathology will be based on the study of patients, but also on animal models. This report summarizes our results obtained on the analysis of the deafness linked to aging on the C57/BL/6 mice.

This article discusses the latest research in the molecular biology and genetics of hearing impairment and its importance to otolaryngologists. Recent research has led to the discovery of many of the genes and gene products that are responsible for hereditary hearing impairment. State mandated screening of newborn infants for hearing loss ensures that a large number of hearing-impaired children will be detected at a very early age. Additionally, these children often will be referred to the otolaryngologist for evaluation of the hearing impairment. It is the otolaryngologist who must gather a d

Two previous case reports described two sibs affected with both sensorineural hearing loss and oligodontia. Here, we report a similar syndrome in a male patient with an, as yet, undescribed vestibular aqueduct enlargement on tomodensitometry. The analysis of the parent's audiograms is consistent with the suggested autosomal recessive mode of inheritance of this disorder.

UNLABELLED: The etiology of sudden hearing loss is still not known. Among other pathomechanisms, vascular disorders have been proposed as an underlying cause. We investigated patients with sudden hearing loss for signs of microcirculation disorders.
PATIENTS: Thirty-one patients (15 males and 16 females, mean age 37.5 years) were admitted because of sudden hearing loss. In addition, all patients underwent thorough ophthalmologic examination.
RESULTS: Refraction, vision, intraocular pressure and excavation of the optic nerve were normal. In 81% of all cases abnormal conjunctival vascular ecta

The clinical and cytologic examinations in 6 deaf patients from 2 genealogical trees with chromosomal 15 satellite enlargement, karyotype 46 … suffer from dysaudia in both ears without any cause and with rapid exacerbation of the disease and deafness at last, 1 to 2 years after birth. Based on the fact that they had similar clinical phenotype and karyotype, their delayed deaf-mutism may be related to the structural abnormality of chromosome 15. An examination of the proband's grandparents showed …

We present a patient with slowly progressing optic atrophy, sensorineural deafness and sensory neuropathy. Clinical examination and testing revealed the exclusively sensorineural nature of this syndrome. Nerve biopsy pointed to primary degeneration. Our review of the literature indicates that this syndrome is categorized as heredo-degenerative.

The diagnosis of the ossicular condition, fixation or interruption, is often not achieved by the tympanometry, because the overlap of the distribution of the static compliance (SC) is so great with the normal group in these two groups. Therefore, it has been said that SC, by itself, has little diagnostic value for differentiating the ossicular lesion. The overlap of the distribution of SC, however, was much smaller between the group with ossicular fixation and the one with ossicular discontinuity. So, apart from deviation from the normal range of SC, the limiting value of SC for discriminating

Wegener's granulomatosis may present with deafness or other aural symptoms. This report describes two patients with histological evidence of Wegener's granulomatosis who developed reversible sensorineural hearing loss during the course of their illness. The first patient showed complete recovery of a sensorineural hearing loss averaging 50 dB after ten months treatment with cyclophosphamide and high-dose prednisolone. The second patient, who was on maintenance haemodialysis, achieved a 40 dB improvement in sensorineural hearing loss within two weeks of adding cyclophosphamide to pre-existing c…

The study was carried out in children born during the four year period 1981-1984 in the Greater Manchester County. The children were investigated for possible congenital infections. Perinatal assessment was carried out for adverse aetiological factors. Family histories were obtained and parents and siblings were examined for any hearing impairment. A total of 164 cases were investigated. Various aetiological groups were formed which showed the following distribution: cause unknown 36.5 per cent; genetic group 20.1 per cent; adverse perinatal factors 14.6 per cent; congenital infections 9.8 per

A case of cortical deafness is reported, which was caused by two episodes of bilateral hypertensive putaminal hemorrhage. Such a case has not appeared in literature up to this time. The patient was a right-handed, 69-year-old man, admitted to us after the stroke with right hemiparesis and disturbance of consciousness. CT scans showed right putaminal hemorrhage. After recovery of consciousness, the patient complained of hearing difficulty of the right ear. The right hemiparesis improved and he was followed ambulatorily after two months hospitalization. He returned to his work and was able to dr…

Vitamin D deficiency has been diagnosed in 27 patients with bilateral deafness in a period of just over 3 years. It should be considered in the differential diagnosis of unexplained bilateral cochlear deafness and may be important in the origin of some cases of otosclerosis, presbyacusis, and the deafness associated with chronic renal failure. Treatment should prevent progressive hearing loss, which may occasionally be partly reversible, and the development of clinical osteomalacia with more generalized skeletal symptoms.

A survey was conducted of deaf children in the Glasgow area diagnosed between 1965 and 1979 to assess the relative incidences of the known aetiological factors. This took the form of a review of case records supplemented by the use of questionnaires. The results showed small variations from earlier published figures but were broadly similar. The effectiveness of rubella and anti-Rhesus immunization were also evaluated. It was found that more than half of all cases of profound deafness in childhood are acquired rather than inherited and are therefore potentially preventable.
