This review summarizes the latest findings, from animal models and clinical studies, regarding the cardiovascular and metabolic consequences in adult life of zinc deficiency (ZD) during prenatal and early postnatal life. The effect of zinc supplementation (ZS) and new insights about sex differences in the phenotype and severity of cardiovascular and metabolic alterations are also discussed. Zinc has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic properties and regulates the activity of enzymes involved in regulation of the metabolic, cardiovascular, and renal systems. Maternal ZD is associa

INTRODUCTION: Patients with neurogenic orthostatic hypotension in the setting of Lewy body diseases (LBnOH) typically have baroreflex failure and peripheral noradrenergic deficiency. Either or both of these abnormalities might determine the magnitude of OH in individual patients. We retrospectively correlated the orthostatic fall in systolic blood pressure (∆BPs) during active standing or 5 min of head-up tilt at 90° from horizontal as a function of several baroreflex and sympathetic noradrenergic indices.
METHODS: Physiological, neurochemical, and sympathetic neuroimaging data from the Valsa

The Italian Society for Osteoporosis, Mineral Metabolism and Bone Diseases (SIOMMMS) has elaborated the following guidelines about the definition, prevention and treatment of inadequate vitamin D status. The highlights are presented here. Daily vitamin D allowance ranges from 1,500 IU (healthy adults) to 2,300 IU (elderly with low calcium intake). Since the average Italian diet includes around 300 IU/day, subjects with no effective sun exposure should be supplemented with 1,200-2,000 IU vitamin D per day. The serum 25-hydroxy-vitamin D [25(OH)D] levels represents the most accurate way to asses

Thyroid function was assessed in thirty two patients with growth hormone deficiency (GHD) by clinical examination and by measurement of T4-levels, free T4-indices, basal TSH values and TSH responses to TRH (100 mu/m2). Sixteen patients (50%) were hypothyroid. In thirteen patients, the endocrine disorders were considered to be of hypothalamic origin. Ten of them showed prolonged responses to TRH and in the other three the responses were exaggerated. In three patients hypothyroidism was due to a primary pituitary disorder. Sixteen patients were euthyroid although three of them showed impaired TS

The prevalence of complement deficiency was studied among 111 survivors of sporadic meningococcal disease located through the medical records of 10 Israeli hospitals. There were 11 patients with CH50 = 0: one with systemic lupus erythematosus and 10 with hereditary terminal complement deficiency (four with homozygous C7 and six with C8 deficiency). There was no hereditary complement deficiency among 39 Ashkenazi subjects as against 18 per cent among 38 Sephardi subjects and 40 per cent among 15 of Moroccan ancestry (p less than 0.05). The age at first presentation of meningococcal disease in c

The phenotype of primary immunodeficiency disorders (PID), and especially common variable immunodeficiency (CVID), may be dominated by symptoms of autoimmune disorders. Furthermore, autoimmunity may be the first manifestation of PID, frequently preceding infections and the diagnosis of hypogammaglobulinemia, which occurs later on. In this case, distinguishing PID from hypogammaglobulinemia secondary to anti-inflammatory treatment of autoimmunity may become challenging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of peripheral blood lymphocyte phenotyping in resolving the diag

The deficiency of vitamins, a condition known as "hidden hunger", causes comprehensive pathological states. Research over the years has identified a relationship between liver diseases and hypovitaminosis or defects in vitamin metabolism. The exact mechanisms remain elusive; however, the crucial involvement of specific vitamins in metabolic functions, alongside the reclassification of liver disease as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), has prompted researchers to investigate the potential cause-effect dynamics between vitamin deficiency and liver disease. Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) associated with gastrointestinal diseases is the second most common etiology of IDA in Japan, and is most often caused by gastrointestinal bleeding. A multicenter, single-arm (2 groups), open-label, phase III study was conducted to assess the efficacy and safety of ferric derisomaltose (FDI) when administered by intravenous (IV) bolus injection (n = 30) or drip infusion (n = 10) in Japanese patients with IDA associated with gastrointestinal diseases. The primary endpoint, which was the mean maximum change in hemoglobin (Hb) concentration from baseline, was 4.33 (95

Total lactosyl ceramide beta-galactosidase (LC) activity from normal and pathologic human leukocytes and tissues was subdivided into LC I (EC 3.2.1.46) and LC II (EC 3.2.1.23) activity by means of specific inhibition of LC II with 5 mM p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-galactoside (Ki = 1.5 mM). In globoid-cell leudodystrophy, inhibition of total LC was nearly complete (only LC II is active), whereas in GM1-gangliosidosis Type 1, very little inhibition was found (only LC I is actict). Total LC activity was not significantly low in either of the diseases, which have different genetic origins. The ratio of L

The Faeroe Islands has a high incidence of glycogen storage disease type III A, carnitine transporter deficiency and holocarboxylase synthetase deficiency. In the article the incidence, symptoms and gene mutations for these three inborn errors of metabolism are reviewed both in general and in specific for children in the Faeroe Islands. None of the mutations for the three diseases is particularly frequent, but all children in the Faeroe Islands with one of the three metabolic diseases are homozygous for one specific mutation, which must be due to a founder effect.

Degenerative mitral valve disease causing mitral valve prolapse is the most common cause of primary mitral regurgitation, with two distinct phenotypes generally recognized with some major differences, i.e., fibroelastic deficiency (FED) and Barlow's disease. The aim of this review was to describe the main histological, clinical and echocardiographic features of patients with FED and Barlow's disease, highlighting the differences in diagnosis, risk stratification and patient management, but also the still significant gaps in understanding the exact pathophysiology of these two phenotypes.

A study of serum zinc and plasma vitamin A concentrations in 54 patients with Crohn's disease was performed. Compared with controls the patients had significantly lowered zinc and vitamin A concentrations. There was a marked correlation between zinc and vitamin A and the activity of the disease, as measured by the Crohn's disease activity index, and a weaker correlation with serum proteins considered to be indicators of disease activity. No correlation was found to vitamin B12 absorption, to the localization of the disease, or to previous ileal resection. The results suggest that zinc and vita
