Prevalence and risk factors of postpartum depression and adjustment disorder during puerperium - a retrospective research.

OBJECTIVE: This observational study was designed to evaluate risk factors and distribution of Adjustment Disorder (AD) and Postnatal Depression (PPD), after delivery and a positive screening at Camposampiero Hospital (2012-2017). BACKGROUND: After childbirth, women are vulnerable to develop psychological disorders. Since the effects of psychopathology are relevant, prevention and early intervention are of paramount importance. Recognising risk factors is therefore necessary. METHODS: Women were screened after delivery, between the 6th and 8th week, using EPDS. Depressive symptoms were examin

Depression as a mediator between intimate partner violence and postpartum sexual issues: a structural analysis.

INTRODUCTION: No studies were found that evaluate the association between intimate partner violence (IPV) before childbirth and sexual issues in the postpartum period. METHOD: A cross-sectional study with 700 women who received prenatal care in a basic health unit in São Paulo, between 2006 and 2007. Sexual issues were assessed through a questionnaire created by the authors, and intimate partner violence was evaluated using a structured questionnaire developed by the WHO. Postpartum depression was evaluated using the SRQ-20 instrument, with a cut-off point of 7/8 considered to be the mediatin

Maternal childhood trauma, postpartum depression, and infant outcomes: Avoidant affective processing as a potential mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Women who have experienced childhood trauma may be at risk for postpartum depression, increasing the likelihood of negative outcomes among their children. Predictive pathways from maternal childhood trauma to child outcomes, as mediated by postpartum depression, require investigation. METHODS: A longitudinal sample of South African women (N=150) was followed through pregnancy and postpartum. Measures included maternal trauma history reported during pregnancy; postpartum depression through six months; and maternal-infant bonding, infant development, and infant physical growth at on

Peripartum neuroactive steroid and γ-aminobutyric acid profiles in women at-risk for postpartum depression.

Neuroactive steroids (NAS) are allosteric modulators of the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) system. NAS and GABA are implicated in depression. The peripartum period involves physiologic changes in NAS which may be associated with peripartum depression and anxiety. We measured peripartum plasma NAS and GABA in healthy comparison subjects (HCS) and those at-risk for postpartum depression (AR-PPD) due to current mild depressive or anxiety symptoms or a history of depression. We evaluated 56 peripartum medication-free subjects. We measured symptoms with the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D17), H

Antidepressant-like effects of omega-3 fatty acids in postpartum model of depression in rats.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a psychiatric disorder that occurs in 10-15% of childbearing women. It is hypothesized that omega-3 fatty acids, which are components of fish oil, may attenuate depression symptoms. In order to examine this hypothesis, the animal model of postpartum depression was established in the present study. Ovariectomized female rats underwent hormone-simulated pregnancy (HSP) regimen and received progesterone and estradiol benzoate or vehicle for 23 days, mimicking the actual rat's pregnancy. The days after hormone termination were considered as the postpartum period. For

Genetic variation in oxytocin rs2740210 and early adversity associated with postpartum depression and breastfeeding duration.

Mothers vary in duration of breastfeeding. These individual differences are related to a variety of demographic and individual maternal factors including maternal hormones, mood and early experiences. However, little is known about the role of genetic factors. We studied single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the OXT peptide gene (rs2740210; rs4813627) and the OXT receptor gene (OXTR rs237885) in two samples of mothers from the Maternal adversity, Vulnerability and Neurodevelopment study (MAVAN), a multicenter (Hamilton and Montreal, Canada) study following mothers and their children from p

The microbiota-gut-brain-epigenome axis as a novel therapeutic target for decoding postpartum depression.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a psychological disorder affecting approximately 10-15% of women following childbirth, with significant implications for maternal and infant well-being. While hormonal fluctuations and psychosocial factors have long been considered primary contributors, recent reports demonstrated that gut microbiome is implicated in modulating maternal mood and behavior. The bidirectional communication between the gut and brain, mediated by microbiota-gut-brain axis, along with genetic and epigenetic modifications, has gained increasing attention as a potential mecha

Trends in postpartum depression and anxiety diagnoses among U.S. active component service women, 2010-2024.

This retrospective cohort study evaluated trends in postpartum depression (PPD) and postpartum anxiety (PPA) diagnoses among 138,588 active component service women with live births (2010-2024). Period prevalence of PPD/PPA remained relatively constant from 2010 to 2017 (2.4%) and began increasing in 2018, with a peak in 2022 (13.4%). Multivariable logistic regression (2021-2024) demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in adjusted odds of PPD/PPA diagnosis in 2023-2024 (adjusted odds ratio 0.89), following the pandemic peak. The most significant risk factors for PPD/PPA diagnosis were

Building Strong Foundations in the NICU: Reducing Risk Factors of Postpartum Depression Through Occupational Therapy.

PURPOSE: Giving birth to a premature infant is a major risk factor for maternal postpartum depression (PPD), which may negatively impact parent-child bonding and result in long lasting behavioral and neurodevelopmental risks for the infant. Strong Foundations: An Occupational Therapist-Led, Activity-Based Support Group was developed to address the increased risk of PPD for mothers in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The objectives of this formative pilot program evaluation were to assess the feasibility and potential effectiveness of this unique program. METHODS: Participants were sel

Hypericin: A potential gut microbiota-based therapeutic for postpartum depression via modulating bile acid metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a mental disorder that occurs in a special period of time, but its pathophysiological mechanism is still unclear. Although hypericin has been shown to have therapeutic effects in previous studies, the underlying mechanisms of its treatment of PPD, especially its interaction with the gut-brain axis, remain to be explored. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism of hypericin in the treatment of PPD. METHODS: The PPD rat model was established by ovariectomy and hormone withdrawal after simulating pregnancy. Postpartum depression-like beha

Association between the effectiveness of labor epidural analgesia and postpartum depression: a prospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a major health issue affecting maternal and neonatal well-being. Labor pain is a significant psychophysiological stressor, and its association with PPD is not completely understood. This study investigated the relationship between the effectiveness of labor epidural analgesia (LEA), measured as percentage improvement in pain (PIP), and the risk of PPD at six weeks postpartum. METHODS: In this prospective observational cohort study, 156 women were enrolled. Participants self-selected whether to receive LEA. Pain intensity was assessed using the Numerical

Prospective Economic Evaluation Alongside the Telephone-Based Nurse-Delivered Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Postpartum Depression Trial.

OBJECTIVE: In a previously reported, multi-site, randomized controlled trial in women with postpartum depression (PPD), telephone-based, nurse-delivered, interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) compared with standard postpartum care showed a reduction of 24% in the incidence of PPD (Dennis et al, British Journal of Psychiatry, 2020). The economic implications of this therapy have not been explored. We aimed to determine the cost-effectiveness of telephone-based, nurse-delivered IPT compared with standard postpartum care, using resource utilization data collected alongside the clinical study.
