Multiple skin sites and the gastrointestinal tract of 57 infants with otitis media were cultured quantitatively for Candida albicans before and after antibiotic therapy. Ten days of systemic therapy with amoxicillin was associated with a twofold increase in the recovery of C. albicans from the rectum and skin. Infants who developed diaper dermatitis had a significant increase in the number of C. albicans organisms recovered from these sites. We conclude that the use of amoxicillin increases the risk for developing diaper dermatitis.

Hand eczema among 50 caterers was occupational in 47 and endogenous in 3 cases. Irritants were considered more important than sensitisers. There was a correlation between atopy and sensitisation to type-I but not type-IV allergens. The commonest type-I sensitiser was fish and for type-IV was garlic. Dilutions of garlic and of onion 50% in arachis oil were not irritant and seemed effective patch test materials. The prognosis was not good and the hand eczema continued even in some of those who changed their jobs.

18 cases of hand dermatitis in hairdressers seen over a 5-year period are reviewed. The diagnoses in these patients are discussed with reference to other studies of hand dermatitis in hairdressers. Contact allergy due to paraphenylenediamine and related hair dyes was the presenting complaint in younger hairdressers, while formaldehyde allergy occurred in those who were older. Atopic dermatitis is clearly characterized by altered cutaneous physiologic responses. There is a tendency to acral vasoconstriction. Rubbing causes skin pallor and white dermographism. A 36-year-old woman developed vitiligo in areas with active dermatitis herpetiformis. Both diseases have been associated with autoimmune disorders. However, in the present case the vitiligo is believed to be an isomorphic reaction to the dermatitis herpetiformis lesions.
