Allergic contact dermatitis caused by calcipotriol.

BACKGROUND: Calcipotriol, a synthetic vitamin D analogue, is widely used for the topical treatment of psoriasis. It often causes irritant reactions, whereas allergic contact dermatitis has less commonly been reported. OBJECTIVES: To report on 6 patients (among them an 11-year-old child) who presented with eczematous lesions complicating pre-existing dermatitis, observed in our tertiary referral patch test clinic between 2004 and 2016. METHODS: Patch tests were performed with the commercial preparation used by the patients and/or its ingredients, including calcipotriol (2 or 10 µg/ml in isopr

Allergic Contact Dermatitis to Eye Drops.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) occurs due to a milieu of allergens and involves different anatomical sites, including eyelids, and periorbital areas. Topically applied ophthalmic drugs are a potential cause of ACD of the periorbital region. Here we describe the report of a patient who developed ACD to eye drop preparations.

Immunological mechanisms in allergic contact dermatitis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Allergic contact dermatitis is a skin disease resulting from an adverse reaction of the immune system to low-molecular-weight organic chemicals or metal ions. This review summarizes recent findings that highlight new details of the complex orchestration of the cellular and molecular immune response to contact allergens. RECENT FINDINGS: Progress has been made in the characterization of the roles of natural killer T cells, natural killer cells, mast cells and neutrophils, as well as in the elucidation of signaling pathways triggered by contact allergens. Global technologies

Footwear contact dermatitis from dimethyl fumarate.

BACKGROUND: Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is an effective inhibitor of mold growth. In very low concentrations, DMF is a potent sensitizer that can cause severe allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). It has been identified as the agent responsible for furniture contact dermatitis in Europe. The aim of this study was to evaluate patients in Slovakia with footwear ACD associated with DMF, with regard to clinical manifestations, patch test results, and results of chemical analysis of their footwear. METHODS: Nine patients with suspected footwear contact dermatitis underwent patch testing with the followin

Why does allergic contact dermatitis exist?

The skin immune system's propensity to produce allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) to harmless chemicals, while otherwise being an efficient defence system, represents a dermatological paradox. We postulate that a major role in signalling in ACD is played by Toll-like receptor (TLR)2 and TLR4, and arises from their activation by extracellular danger-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). Ligand activation of TLR4/2 results in the expression of interleukins (ILs) IL-1β, IL-6, IL-12, IL-18 and IL-23, tumour necrosis factor-α and interferon-α. These cytokines promote acquisition of sensitization, a

Cheilitis, perioral dermatitis and contact allergy.

Cheilitis is a superficial inflammatory condition of the lip. It can occur either alone or be associated with stomatitis or perioral eczema. Contact hypersensitivity reactions are a frequent cause of cheilitis. Cosmetic and hygiene products are the most usual causes. Less frequently, allergic cheilitis is caused by contact with musical instruments, topical medicines or food allergens. Cases of cheilitis induced by dental material are rare and debated. The diagnosis relies on patch tests, which start with the European baseline series and the patient's personal cosmetic and topical products. Thi

Shock treatment: swimming pool contact dermatitis.

Allergic contact dermatitis to potassium peroxymonosulfate, used as a chemical shock treatment for hot tubs and swimming pools, should be in the differential diagnosis for patients presenting with dermatitis triggered by swimming pool or hot tub exposure. We report the first pediatric case of allergic contact dermatitis to potassium peroxymonosulfate after swimming exposure.
