Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome in an adolescent with epilepsy: Diagnostic and surgical challenges-first case report from Palestine.

Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome is a rare congenital Müllerian duct anomaly characterized by uterine duplication, obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis, and it should be considered in adolescents presenting with severe cyclical pelvic pain. We report the case of a 14-year-old female who presented with 6 months of progressively worsening dysmenorrhea and pelvic pain; imaging studies revealed uterus didelphys with an obstructed right hemivagina, a posterior pelvic collection, and right renal agenesis. The patient underwent transvaginal septal excision with evacuation of hematoc

Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome: A case report in a young woman, with literature review.

Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome is a rare complex congenital disorder, with combined Müllerian and mesonephric duct anomalies, presenting with uterus didelphys, unilateral blind hemivagina and ipsilateral renal agenesis. Hemivaginal obstruction usually leads to impairment of normal menstrual flow, resulting in symptoms after menarche, namely dysmenorrhea, pelvic pain or infertility. Age of presentation depends on the anatomical features of this anomaly. We report a case of a 21-year-old female presenting with few symptoms and incidental findings on transvaginal ultrasound, with typical findi

Laparoscopic en bloc resection of a para-cervical cancer with OHVIRA syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: There are some reports of cervical cancer with uterus didelphys but a case of clear cell carcinoma (CCCC) with Obstructed Hemivagina and Ipsilateral Renal Anomaly (OHVIRA) syndrome is extremely rare. The aim of this paper was to report a case of CCCC with OHVIRA syndrome and the difficulty in making a preoperative diagnosis. CASE REPORT: A 65 years old woman presented with postmenopausal bleeding and pelvic examination showed right paracervical mass. Preoperative confirmation of cervical carcinoma was difficult due to the location of the mass, which was inaccessible by cervical pun

A Case of Obstructed Hemivagina with Ectopic Ureter Leading to Severe Hydrocolpos and Contralateral Renal Outflow Tract Obstruction in a Neonate.

BACKGROUND: Renal and Müllerian anomalies are frequently associated. Young age at presentation can present challenges in diagnosis and management. We report a case with an unusual presentation and management of this association in the neonatal period. CASE: A 2-day-old girl had hydronephrosis with a large pelvic fluid collection. Magnetic resonance imaging of the pelvis demonstrated right hydronephrosis and uterine didelphys with an obstructed left hemivagina with hydrocolpos. A tube vaginostomy was used to decompress the vagina. Fluid was consistent with urine from an ectopic ureteral implan

Viable pregnancies in women with different mullerian duct anomalies.

Some of the fascinating developmental anomalies encountered by Obstetricians and Gynecologists are mullerian duct disorder of various types. The diagnosis is usually made during workup for infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss or cyclic pelvic pain. Because of embryologic developmental structural share and proximity, it is not uncommon to find mullerian duct, urinary tract and skeletal anomalies concurrently. Three parous women with different mullerian duct malformations preoperatively diagnosed as ovarian tumor, ectopic pregnancy and footling breech are reported Intraoperatively, the first ca

Imaging diagnosis of congenital uterine malformation.

Congenital anomaly of the female reproductive system is associated with higher rate of infertility, spontaneous abortion, intrauterine growth retardation, premature birth and postpartum bleed. Because of the variable clinical pictures of obstruction of menstrual flow in adolescence to hypomenorrhea, vaginal discharge, dyspareunia, and fertility problems in adult life, early and accurate diagnosis is difficult. Complete uterine and vaginal septum can be easily confused with uterus didelphys. Management of these two müllerian duct anomalies is different. With improved treatment methods for compl

Autopsy findings in a severely affected infant with a 2q terminal deletion.

We describe a 37-week gestation female infant who was born with a terminal 2q deletion. Both of her parents had normal chromosomes. This infant had multiple anomalies, including hypertelorism, short palpebral fissures, microphthalmia, cleft lip/cleft palate, and abnormal ears. Autopsy documented Dandy-Walker malformation with severe hydrocephalus, aortopulmonary window, secundum atrial septal defect, duodenal atresia, incomplete rotation of the bowel, gonadal dysgenesis, uterus didelphys, and musculoskeletal defects. Compared with the other 6 children with 2q terminal deletion documented in th

Congenital anomalies of the müllerian system.

Congenital anomalies of the müllerian system, the most common of which are uterine malformations, are associated with fertility problems. Multifactorial polygenic and familial factors are involved in their formation. The result may be deficient development (agenesis, rudimentary horn, unicornuate uterus), nonfusion (didelphys or bicornuate uterus), or defective canalization of the müllerian ducts (septate uterus). The principal diagnostic procedures include HSG, laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, and US. The clinical presentation varies from symptoms of obstruction of the menstrual flow in adolescence

On-host flea phenology and flea-borne pathogen surveillance among mammalian wildlife of the pineywoods of East Texas.

Flea-borne diseases are endemic in Texas, U.S.A., with an increasing incidence of flea-borne typhus and cat scratch disease. Knowledge of flea natural history could provide information to protect public health, yet many knowledge gaps remain outside of plague-endemic regions. Our objective was to characterize seasonal activity patterns of fleas on common mammalian wildlife species and test fleas and wildlife for Rickettsia and Bartonella pathogens. We performed one year of monthly trapping for rodents and medium-sized mammals in a national forest with high recreational use and urban encroachme

Murine Typhus: A Review of a Reemerging Flea-Borne Rickettsiosis with Potential for Neurologic Manifestations and Sequalae.

Murine typhus is an acute febrile illness caused by Rickettsia typhi, an obligately intracellular Gram-negative coccobacillus. Rats (Rattus species) and their fleas (Xenopsylla cheopis) serve as the reservoir and vector of R. typhi, respectively. Humans become infected when R. typhi-infected flea feces are rubbed into flea bite wounds or onto mucous membranes. The disease is endemic throughout much of the world, especially in tropical and subtropical seaboard regions where rats are common. Murine typhus is reemerging as an important cause of febrile illness in Texas and Southern California, wh

Toxoplasma gondii in domestic and wild animals from forest fragments of the municipality of Natal, northeastern Brazil.

Toxoplasmosis stands out as a global disease that has felines as definitive hosts. In the municipality of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil, two parks are notable for their ecological and social importance. This study aimed to investigate the presence of Toxoplasma gondii in short hair cats, bats and small non-volant mammals in these two ecological reserves. Altogether, biological samples were obtained from 154 mammals, 92 wild animals from both areas and 62 domestic cats of the Parque da Cidade. In total, 22 (53.7%) non-volant wild mammals, 11 (21.5%) bats and 28 (52.8%) cats were posi

Transmission, reservoir hosts and control of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis.

Zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL) caused by Leishmania infantum is an important disease of humans and dogs. Here we review aspects of the transmission and control of ZVL. Whilst there is clear evidence that ZVL is maintained by sandfly transmission, transmission may also occur by non-sandfly routes, such as congenital and sexual transmission. Dogs are the only confirmed primary reservoir of infection. Meta-analysis of dog studies confirms that infectiousness is higher in symptomatic infection; infectiousness is also higher in European than South American studies. A high prevalence of infec

Feeding success of Lutzomyia evansi (Diptera: Psychodidae) experimentally exposed to small mammal hosts in an endemic focus of Leishmania chagasi in northern Colombia.

Lutzomyia evansi is the vector of Leishmania chagasi in northern Colombia. Differences in feeding success were revealed, when this phlebotomine sand fly was fed on five species of small mammal hosts from an endemic focus of visceral leishmaniasis. In each trial, 50 female sand flies were provided access to similar-sized depilated areas of the hind foot of each of 44 individual mammals and allowed to feed for 30 minutes. The number of engorged sand flies was counted at the end of each trial and compared among host species by analysis of variance and Tukey's multiple comparisons test. Sand flies

Host-dependent differences in feeding and reproduction of Ixodes dammini (Acari: Ixodidae).

The frequencies with which adult Ixodes dammini Spielman, Clifford, Piesman and Corwin feed upon white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), raccoons (Procyon lotor), opossums (Didelphis virginiana), and domestic cats were compared in a wooded site in northeastern United States. By combining estimates of the quantity of ticks feeding on each host species with host densities, we derived the relative contribution made by each kind of host to the feeding of the tick population. To compare engorgement success and reproductive efficacy, we weighed ticks found on these hosts and compared tick weight

An alternative animal model for perinatal carcinogenesis.

The differences in developmental biology between marsupials and eutherian animals provide alternative approaches to major problems in perinatal carcinogenesis. The high susceptibility of the neonatal American marsupial, the opossum (Didelphis virginiana), during early postnatal development to oral, chemical induction of dysontogenetic tumors with a close morphologic and biologic resemblance to those in the human suggests that the neonatal marsupial may offer unique opportunities for the study of carcinogenesis during ontogenesis without placental interference and under a maternal influence lim

Vertebrate hosts and vectors of Trypanosoma rangeli in the Amazon Basin of Brazil.

A total of 46 Trypanosoma rangeli stocks were isolated from naturally infected mammals and triatomine vectors. Twenty-two stocks were from the common opossum (Didelphis marsupialis), one from the brown "4-eyed" opossum (Metachirus nudicaudatus), one from the anteater (Tamandua tetradactyla), one from the coati (Nasua nasua), seven from Rhodnius pictipes and 14 from Rhodnius robustus. Two stocks were also isolated from recently fed sandflies (Lutzomyia sp., Shannoni group). The stocks were identified as T. rangeli on the basis of natural or experimental salivary gland infections in Rhodnius, in

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum infections and associated factors in sheep from Costa Rica.

The presence of antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum were analyzed in 392 sheep sera from ten Costa Rican ovine flocks using indirect immuno-enzymatic assays. Additionally, general information about sheep management, environment, and clinical reproductive disorders was assessed through a questionnaire to inquire factors related to these apicomplexan parasites. A total of 161 (41.1%) serum samples reacted positive to T. gondii, 43 (10.9%) to N. caninum and 26 (6.63%) to both parasites. Toxoplasma gondii serorreactors were detected in all the analyzed flocks (100.0%), meanwh

Amblyomma auricularium (Ixodida: Ixodidae) in Florida: New Hosts and Distribution Records.

Previous published evidence for the occurrence of an exotic armadillo tick, Amblyomma auricularium (Conil), in Florida is scant, but we found it is fully established and integrated into the state's tick fauna. We collected 11,192 specimens of this tick from naturalized nine-banded armadillos, Dasypus novemcinctus L., and 14 other species of wild native mammals and birds in Florida, while sampling statewide during 2004 through 2007. In all, we document its specific presence only in 14 contiguous South Florida counties. Moreover, we report the first collections of A. auricularium from the Virgin
