The digestive tract has a special immune system where predominate the secretory factors of IgA. The IgA secreted by the plasma cells of the digestive mucosa is dimeric and is poured into the intestinal lumen after being attached to a protein of epithelial orgin. These facts lead to defence reactions of a special type. The digestive consequences of a quantitative abnormality of this system (hypogammaglobulinemia) or qualitative abnormality such as alpha heavy chain disease or Whipple's disease, are briefly reviewed. The consequences of an abnormal response of this system are considered in the l

In our hospital the incidence of upper digestive hemorhage [UDH] is greater after the 4th decade of age and predominantes in the male sex. The patients' clinical data was important in the diagnosis of the lesion. In 63% of our cases a close relation was found between the previous intake of substances considered ulcerogenous and the hemorrhagic episode, as well as the presence of stress situations. In our experiences the causes of UDH in order of their frequency are: 1. Acute lesions of the gastric mucosa. 2. Duodenal ulcer. 3. Gastric ulcer. 4. Stomal ulcer. 5. Bleeding esophagitis. 6. Others.

In about 5-6% of all patients with malignant myeloproliferative disorders the gastrointestinal tract is involved with macroscopic lesions. The most common sites of digestive manifestations are stomach, small bowel, pancreas and colon. Multiple irregular ulcers, doughy infiltration of the bowel wall, multiple nodules and diffuse polyposis of the colon are classic patterns of secondary lymphoma of the gut. Prognosis is considerably impaired by gastroenterological symptoms.

1. The carbohydrase activities of homogenates of mucosa from the abomasum, small intestine, caecum and colon, and of the pancreas of cattle were studied. 2. The disaccharidase activities were located mainly in the small intestine and showed a non-uniform pattern of distribution along the small intestine; trehalase activity was highest in the proximal part, lactase and cellobiase activities were highest in the proximal and middle parts and maltase activity was highest in the distal part. 3. The intestinal lactase and cellobiase activities were highest in the young calf and decreased with age, w
