Optimising tobacco control campaigns within a changing media landscape and among priority populations.

Reviews published over the past decade confirm tobacco control campaigns can be effective for influencing adult and youth tobacco use behaviours, with strengthening evidence for high cost-effectiveness. Evidence is also accumulating for positive campaign effects on interpersonal discussions, social norms and policy support that can help motivate and sustain quitting and reduce uptake. Research needs over the next decade centre on the rapidly changing media environment and the equity of campaign effects among high smoking prevalence communities. The field needs specific evidence on: how to meas

Internet Memes as Drivers of Health Narratives and Infodemics: Integrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Digital media memes have emerged as influential tools in health communication, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. While they offer opportunities for emotional engagement and community resilience, they also act as vectors for health misinformation, contributing to the global infodemic. Despite growing interest in their communicative power, the role of memes in shaping public perception and misinformation diffusion remains underexplored in infodemiology. OBJECTIVE: This integrative review aims to analyze how memes influence emotional, behavioral, and ideological responses to…

Aligning social media design with adolescent brain development: rationale and recommendations.

The human brain and its associated faculties develop in a non-linear, asynchronous way across childhood and adolescence. Current digital technology policies, especially those involving social media, have failed to adequately account for this in their design. To maximise efficacy and societal benefit, such policies must be biologically informed. Synthesising across existing neuroscientific evidence, we propose a developmentally staged framework for biologically informed social media design and regulation. If implemented, the resulting recommendations may help to safeguard young people during pa

Social media experiences of solo leisure travelers during the travel process: A phenomenological study.

The rise of solo travel has become a significant trend in the leisure sphere; nonetheless, there is limited understanding of how solo travelers utilize social media throughout their travel process. This lack of insight represents a research problem, as it hinders the ability to enhance solo travel experiences through social media engagement. Addressing this gap, this study investigates the specific ways in which solo leisure travelers experience and engage with social media during their journeys. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with 18 solo tra

Body image for boys and men in digital spaces: current findings and a conceptual reboot for future research.

Digital spaces - such as social media, video games, dating apps, virtual reality, online fitness communities, pornography, and online forums - are important sociocultural influences for appearance and body ideals. Boys and men frequently engage with these digital spaces, and their patterns of engagement can often differ from the use-patterns of girls and women. This paper aimed to provide an overview of the current findings investigating how the specific ways that boys and men engage with digital spaces can impact body image, including exposure to appearance ideals, online self-presentation, d

A harsher reality for adolescents with depression on social media.

Social media use is often highlighted as an important cause of the recent rise in depression among adolescents. However, this perspective overlooks a crucial reverse causality, namely that levels of depression might also shape adolescents' social media use. In a diary study among 479 adolescents (Mage = 15.98; 16.9% clinically depressed), we assessed their level of depression and then monitored their social media activities and experiences daily for 100 subsequent days. Depressed adolescents did not differ from their non-depressed peers in the frequency of posting and the time spent scrolling.

Characterizing In Vivo Exposure to Alcohol Content in the Media: Media Platform, Engagement, and Associations With Attitudes.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related content in media is overwhelmingly presented positively, and exposure to this content is linked to adolescent drinking. Yet, less is known about how often adolescents encounter alcohol content via media, how exposure varies across platforms, and how adolescents typically engage with such content. We used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methods to collect detailed, real-time data about alcohol-related content encountered across a variety of digital media sources. METHODS: High school students recruited through social media (N = 302; mean age = 16.2; 63.9% fema…

Empirical research on maladaptive daydreaming (MD), a clinically impairing form of compulsive immersive fantasy associated with attention dysregulation, emotional dysregulation and digital behavioural addictions, has expanded substantially over the past decade. Despite this growth, the intellectual structure, thematic evolution and collaborative networks of the MD literature indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) remain unmapped. This bibliometric study aimed to characterise the intellectual landscape of WoSCC-indexed MD research between 2009 and 2025. A total of 141 publication
