Endemic skeletal fluorosis is characterized by bone, joint and muscle pain, progressive ankylosis of various joints and crippling deformities. Whole body skeletal scintigraphy with 99Tcm-methylene diphosphonate was performed for 17 symptomatic subjects suffering from this disorder. The fluoride content of drinking water ranged from 4.1 to 12.9 mg l-1 (normal < 1 mg l-1). Urinary and serum fluoride levels were markedly elevated. Serum calcium (total and ionized), inorganic phosphorus, creatinine and albumin were essentially normal while serum alkaline phosphatase was elevated in six subjects (m

A prospective study of randomized analysis treatment of 50 cases of frozen shoulder was carried out in 3 Swiss medical centres. Three separate aetiological groups were studied: post-traumatic (40%), neurological (14%) and idiopathic (46%). An increased radioisotope bone scan (99 mTc diphosphonate) was found in 96% of cases, regardless of aetiology. The so-called idiopathic frozen shoulder showed a scapulo-humeral increase in radioisotope uptake in several areas (in 82% of cases) without involvement of the ipsilateral carpus. Clinically, the neurological type was associated with a shoulder-hand

Technetium-99m HSA (human serum albumin) is a nanometer-sized albumin-based inert colloid, which has a specific ability to accumulate in inflamed soft tissue lesions. With a particle size smaller than 30 nm, Tc-99m HSA spills into the extravascular space in the sites of inflammation because of the changed capillary permeability. The conventional tracer in joint scintigraphy, technetium-99m methylene diphosphonate (Tc-99m-MDP) is a boneseeking compound, which strongly accumulates in the epiphyseal area of growing bones. This makes the estimation of the inflammatory process in the joints of grow

The pathogenesis, clinical features, indications for therapy, and current pharamacologic management of Paget's disease are reviewed. Paget's disease is a bone disorder of unknown etiology primarily affecting the elderly. Overactive bone resorption leads to the accelerated formation of disorganized, weak bone. Pain and fractures are common clinical features. Neurologic, cardiovascular, metabolic, and neoplastic complications are also reported. Because most patients are asymptomatic, the disease is often detected during routine roentgenography or laboratory tests. Primary indications for pharmac

Amyloidosis is a local or systemic disease caused by the deposition of misfolded proteins outside the cell, with rapid progression, and dire prognosis. Common types of cardiac amyloidosis are monoclonal immunoglobulin light chain amyloidosis (AL-CA) and transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CA). Nuclear medicine examinations can be accurate, rapid, and non-invasive to help diagnose diseases and can effectively predict the prognosis of patients with CA. Technetium (99Tcm)-labeled bisphosphonate imaging has been included in the consensus of experts and has become the first-line imaging method

Maslach and Jackson. Results: In the field of examined dimensions of burnout syndrome, the most characteristic was emotional exhaustion, which has occurred with a frequency of nearly 30% and with typically high intensity among professionals working in neonatal intensive care units (N = 278). In addition, one-fifth were characterized by a high frequency and intensity of depersonalization. At the same time, nearly a third of them experienced a decrease in personal effectiveness. Workplace and time spent in healthcare did not show a significant connection with the incidence of burnout syndrome, h

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical features of patients with bisphosphonate related ocular side effects (BROSE).
METHODS: The medical records of all patients with BROSE between January 2009 and December 2019 were reviewed.
RESULTS: Nine cases with BROSE were identified. All subjects were female. Median age at diagnosis was of 69 years. The leading indication for bisphosphonate treatment was osteoporosis (n=7), Paget's disease of bone (n=1) and breast cancer (n=1). Six (66.67%) patients presented with uveitis, one (11%) episcleritis and two (22%) with orbital inflammation. Five events (55.5%

BACKGROUND/AIM: Replantation of avulsed teeth may lead to root resorption. Bisphosphonates (BPs), a class of drugs of used to treat resorptive diseases of the bone such as osteoporosis and Paget's disease, have been observed to exert an antiresorptive effect on periodontal bone as well. The antiresorptive properties of BPs could prove them useful in preventing root resorption of replanted avulsed teeth. The aim of this systematic review was to analyze and summarize the currently available literature concerning the use of BPs in preventing root resorption of avulsed teeth.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this review was to study risk factors involved in osteonecrosis of the jaw after oral surgery in patients treated with bisphosphonates due to primary osteoporosis.
METHODS: In order to find relevant related publications, we conducted a systematic search in specialized (Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Trip Database) and general (Medline, Embase, Isi Web of Knowledge) bibliographical databases. The search strategy included the terms osteonecrosis, adults and oral surgery. It was limited to papers focused on human adults undergoing dentoalveolar surgery while bein

Bone metastases is a serious complication of patients with tumor. It is associated with substantial morbidity, including bone pain, pathological fracture, neurological deficit and (or) hypercalcemia. Thus, the management of bone metastasis is a clinically significant issue. Bisphosphonates have now become a part of standard therapy to treat and prevent skeletal-related events (SRE), it could inhibit osteoclast-mediated bone resorption and demonstrate antitumor activity in preclinical models. Bisphosphonates are the most effective agent for treating and (or) preventing complications of bone meta

Bisphosphonate prevents the fracture by controlling the function of osteoclasts and inhibiting bone absorption powerfully for osteoporosis. It is shown clinically that both alendronate and risedronate reduce postmenopausal osteoporosis patient's vertebral and nonvertebral fractures. Recently it became clear that bisphosphonate not only reduces bone absorption, but also improves bone quality such as bone microarchitecture and material properties. Furthermore, we showed using finite element analysis that internal use of bisphosphonate reduces strain of the cancellous bone inside vertebral body w

A 66-year-old man with multiple myeloma treated with zoledronic acid, melphalan, and prednisone after a tooth extraction developed severe osteonecrosis of the mandible that was nonresponsive to antibiotic therapy. A CT scan showed innumerable fragmented sequestra in the mandible and some adjacent soft tissue fullness around the mandible. The association between the use of bisphosphonates and osteonecrosis of the jaw has been described only recently.

Parathyroidectomy is the only option available for the cure of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), which is a common endocrine disorder and often causes secondary osteoporosis. This disease is now recognized as a disorder with few overt manifestations, presenting most often as mild or asymptomatic hypercalcemia. There are accumulating PHPT patients who are unwilling or are unsuitable for surgery. In these patients, bisphosphonate is a most useful candidate as supportive therapy. Bisphosphonates are the most potent class of antiresorpitve drugs used in the treatment of bone diseases with enhanced resorption, like malignant osteolysis, osteoporosis and Paget's disease. Multiple myeloma is commonly associated with skeletal morbidity, including osteolysis, bone fractures, pain and hypercalcemia. These clinical complications result from increased osteoclast number and function which is due to release of osteoclast-stimulating factors by myeloma cells and the tumoral environment. By inhibition of osteoclast activity and inducing cell apoptosis, bisphosphonates can prevent d

The bisphosphonates are chemically simple compounds that have been used mainly for the treatment of osteoporotic conditions and for hypercalcaemia. They have had relatively limited use in children. Their action is principally to interfere with the activity of osteoclasts by causing apoptosis. Their use in children has been for problems of soft tissue calcification (e.g. idiopathic arterial calcification, myositis ossificans progressiva and dermatomyositis), hypercalcaemia (e.g. caused by malignancy, immobilisation or hyperparathyroidism), generalised bone disease (e.g. osteogenesis imperfecta,

1. Hypercalcaemia is a common disorder, which frequently requires specific treatment either to control symptoms, or to prevent the development of irreversible organ damage or death. Although the best and most effective way of controlling hypercalcaemia in the long-term is to treat the underlying cause, medical antihypercalcaemic therapy is often required in clinical practice, either as a holding measure, or because the primary disease cannot itself be treated. 2. The mainstays of medical antihypercalcaemic therapy are firstly, to promote calcium excretion by the kidney by restoring extracellul
