PURPOSE: Vein punctures are performed daily to sample blood. Ultrasound (US) offers an alternative to the blind landmark technique for difficult vascular access. A challenge for this procedure is the presence of US gel in the puncture area. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the ultraviolet (UV) transmittance spectra of different contact lenses and assess the effect of wear on UV transmittance values and ocular protection factor (PF).
METHODS: Transmittance in the UV range (200-400 nm) of 216 contact lenses was measured before and after wear, using a spectrophotometer. Patients with Temporomandibular Joint Ankylosis are among difficult airways and anesthesia and airway management of these patients encounter anesthesiologists with challenge. Herein we report a case of Temporomandibular Joint Ankylosis with difficult ventilation after failed attempts to intubate with fibroptic broncoscopy a disposable Laryngeal Mask Airway reestablishes the ventilation. The case suggests that the disposable Laryngeal Mask Airway may be useful in airway management of patients with a Temporomandibular Joint Ankylosis.

Colorimetric carbon dioxide detectors are useful indicators of proper endotracheal tube placement. We have found that they also are helpful during bag and mask ventilation as an indicator of a patent airway. In this report, we describe our experience with these devices for use during preintubation airway stabilization as observed during videotaped performances from a prospective, randomized trial of intubation premedication.

Epistaxsis and crustation are common problems associated with long-term use of oxygen through nasal prongs in patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The nasal prong can cause direct trauma to the septal mucosa. We describe a simple solution to this problem with use of the disposable ear tip used in tympanometry.

PURPOSE: Single-use, laser-cut, slow-flow nipples were evaluated for their effect on respiration and milk ingestion in 13 healthy preterm infants (32.7-37.1 weeks postmenstrual age) under nonlaboratory, clinical conditions.
METHOD: The primary outcomes of minute ventilation and overall milk transfer were measured by using integrated nasal airflow and volume-calibrated bottles during suck bursts and suck burst breaks during slow-flow and standard-flow nipple bottle feedings. BACKGROUND: Disposable pipette extraction with reversed-phase sorbent is proposed for the fast and simple GC determination of the antipsychotic drugs chlorpromazine, olanzapine, clozapine and biperiden - an anticholinergic drug - in human urine.
