Antifungal activities of quince seed mucilage hydrogel decorated with essential oils of Nigella sativa, Citrus sinensis and Cinnamon verum.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Candidiasis and pityriasis versicolor are opportunistic fungal infections that are caused by Candida spp. and Malassezia spp. yeasts. Conventional drugs like azole and amino derivatives are known to treat fungal skin diseases. However, drawbacks like long-term side effects and drug resistance lead to investigate on antifungal properties of phytochemicals as an alternative to available synthetic drugs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The herbal nano hydrogel was successfully synthesized from Quince Seed extract followed by ultrasonic treatment and it has been formulated using

Changes in Maxillary Sinus Volume and It's Walls Thickness Due to Chronic Rhinosinusitis: A Prospective Study.

OBJECTIVE: Antihypertensive drugs influence the neurohumoral cardiovascular system and the concentration of hormones involved in blood pressure regulation. Little is known, however, about the extent to which various antihypertensive drugs influence cardiovascular hormone concentrations and thus disturb the differential diagnosis of hypertension in clinical practice. In this study we compare the impact of different antihypertensive medicaments on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in patients with essential hypertension who are screened for primary aldosteronism. DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: We

Genome-wide identification of conditionally essential genes for growth in the presence of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim in sulfamethoxazole- and trimethoprim-resistant Escherichia coli.

UNLABELLED: Resistance to sulfonamides (SULs) and trimethoprim (TMP) in Escherichia coli threatens their clinical relevance. Beyond known resistance mechanisms, little is understood about the cellular responses that enable resistant E. coli to grow under these antibiotic stresses. This study aimed to identify genes that support bacterial growth under SUL and TMP stress. Two saturated transposon mutant libraries were constructed in resistant E. coli MG1655 harboring either dfrA1 or sul2. They were grown with and without 1/2 and 1/4 minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of sulfamethoxazole (SMX

Burden of alcohol use and inclusion of alcohol use disorder medications in the essential medicine lists across 132 countries: An observational study.

Harmful use of alcohol affects the health of the population. The treatment coverage of alcohol use disorders (AUD) varies among countries. The study aimed to determine the inclusion of AUD medicines in various national Essential Medicine Lists (EMLs) and its association with alcohol consumption. It was a secondary data analysis of alcohol consumptions and AUD-related medicines in EML. Data were extracted from the WHO Global Essential Medicines database and the WHO Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health 2018. Data were extracted for 194 countries. Only 132 of 194 countries (68.0%) had EML,

Availability of two essential medicines for mental health in Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Nepal, Malawi, Senegal, and Tanzania: Evidence from nationally representative samples of 7958 health facilities.

BACKGROUND: Access to effective mental health services in low- and- middle income countries (LMICs) is limited, leading to a substantial global treatment gap. Amitriptyline, an anti-depressant, and diazepam, an anxiolytic drug, are classified as essential medications by the World Health Organization (WHO). They are the only psychotropic medications whose availability in health facilities is documented as part of Service Provision Assessment surveys. Our objective was to characterize the availability of these medicines in seven countries. METHODS: We pooled nationally representative data from

Target identification in Fusobacterium nucleatum by subtractive genomics approach and enrichment analysis of host-pathogen protein-protein interactions.

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium nucleatum, a well studied bacterium in periodontal diseases, appendicitis, gingivitis, osteomyelitis and pregnancy complications has recently gained attention due to its association with colorectal cancer (CRC) progression. Treatment with berberine was shown to reverse F. nucleatum-induced CRC progression in mice by balancing the growth of opportunistic pathogens in tumor microenvironment. Intestinal microbiota imbalance and the infections caused by F. nucleatum might be regulated by therapeutic intervention. Hence, we aimed to predict drug target proteins in F. nucle

Octanoic acid suppresses harmaline-induced tremor in mouse model of essential tremor.

Recent work exploring the use of high-molecular weight alcohols to treat essential tremor (ET) has identified octanoic acid as a potential novel tremor-suppressing agent. We used an established harmaline-based mouse model of ET to compare tremor suppression by 1-octanol and octanoic acid. The dose-related effect on digitized motion power within the tremor bandwidth as a fraction of overall motion power was analyzed. Both 1-octanol and octanoic acid provided significant reductions in harmaline tremor. An 8-carbon alkyl alcohol and carboxylic acid each suppress tremor in a pre-clinical mouse mod

Treatment of essential thrombocythemia with anagrelide.

Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a myeloproliferative disorder characterized by persistent elevation in platelet count. It is a rare disorder in children, and children who have symptoms require treatment. We report the successful use of anagrelide, with few toxic effects, in the treatment of three children with ET.

Evidence of increased odds of essential tremor in Parkinson's disease.

In a case control study using a standardized protocol, 600 subjects were evaluated for essential tremor (ET). We demonstrated that ET was significantly more frequent in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) (12/204, 5.9%) compared to diseased controls (2/206, 1%) and healthy controls (1/190, 0.5%). A regression analysis with ET as outcome and group (either PD or healthy controls or diseased controls) as independent variable (adjusting for age and sex) revealed that PD had higher odds of having ET than diseased controls (OR = 5.43, 95% CI = 1.16, 25.39, P < 0.001) and healthy controls (OR = 10

Family Perspectives on Stigma Toward Women Who Use Drugs in Tanzania.

The stigma surrounding drug use adversely affects the health and wellbeing of people who use drugs. With projected increases in drug use in Africa over the next decade, understanding public perceptions of drug use is critical. This study explores perceptions and attitudes toward illicit drug use from the viewpoint of the families of women who use drugs. In March 2019, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 19 family members of women who use drugs in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The interviews included a closed-ended survey and open-ended questions about drug use attitudes. We thematically an

Drug-induced Parkinson-like events: a real-world study from 2004 to the first quarter of 2024 based on FAERS.

BACKGROUND: Timely identification of drug-induced Parkinson-like events is essential to improve clinical management and enhance patients' quality of life. However, there is a significant lack of studies addressing these events in real-world settings. METHODS: To bridge this gap, we analyzed adverse event (AE) reports related to Parkinson-like events from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database from the first quarter of 2004 to the first quarter of 2024. Our objective was to summarize a list of potential drugs at high risk for Parkinson-like events and their corresponding propo

Evaluation of Function and Features of Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Small Intestinal Epithelial Cells for Analyzing Peptide Drug Intestinal Absorption Profiles.

Caco-2 cell monolayers are widely employed as an in vitro model of the intestinal barrier, capable of accurately predicting the absorption of conventional small-molecule drugs. However, this model may not be applicable to all drugs, and the accuracy of absorption prediction is typically poor for high molecular weight drugs. Recently, human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell-derived small intestinal epithelial cells (hiPSC-SIECs), exhibiting properties similar to those of the small intestine when compared with Caco-2 cells, have been developed and are considered a novel candidate model for in
