Twenty-one adult outpatients with dyspepsia and endoscopically proven duodenitis without chronic ulceration completed a double-blind trial of either cimetidine (1 g/day) or placebo. Treatment with cimetidine for 6 weeks resulted in a significant improvement in symptoms and in the endoscopic appearance of the duodenitis when compared to treatment with placebo. The symptomatic and endoscopic improvement, however, was not associated with any significant change in the histological grading of the duodenitis.

This paper has been aimed at an evaluation of the prevalence of upper alimentary duct pathologies in an industrial population, as well as at an attempt to evaluate the value of subjective symptoms in screening tests. Altogether 975 subjects have been examined, but only 235 of them underwent endoscopic studies. The data on subjective symptoms have been collected from all the subjects, by way of a special questionnaire. The specificity of abnormal radiomorphological patterns in the endoscopic retrograde pancreatogram (ERCP) has been studied. Out of 3,000 ERCPs 381 contained pathological findings in the pancreatic duct, all of which was subsequently checked by histology.
