Still sons of the shaking earth: Mexicans and Guatemalans in the East Coast migrant labor stream.

The author reports on a survey of 375 undocumented migrants from Guatemala and Mexico working along the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast. The focus was on "documenting sojourning versus settling behaviors and intentions of migrants from Latin American homelands and assessing risk for acquiring and transmitting AIDS, sexual, and communicable diseases by internationally commuting migrants.... The researchers also sought to learn why migrants come to the east coast and how living here is different from [other] parts of the country...."

Review of economic modeling evidence from NICE appraisals of rare disease treatments for spinal muscular atrophy.

INTRODUCTION: The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in England has appraised three treatments for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), namely, nusinersen, onasemnogene abeparvovec, and risdiplam. As rare disease treatments (RDTs) commonly face challenges in health technology assessment (HTA) processes due to their clinical and economic uncertainties, an in-depth review of these appraisals is useful to enable a deeper understanding of economic modeling considerations for SMA. AREAS COVERED: This review is a detailed analysis of NICE appraisals for SMA and aims to compare the e

Air-Pollution Control in an Emergent Market: Does It Work? Evidence from Romania.

Economic development in a national and international context must be based on a sustainability strategy established on the systemic interaction between the economic, sociocultural, and ecological environments. Today, the world is confronted by many challenges related to climate change and natural-resource flows, including waste streams resulting from economic activity. The need for national and European environmental standards and the work of an environment monitoring authority to reduce air pollution are highlighted by economic and industrial activities. Thus, our research focused on determin…

Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Syndrome: Conceptualising an Approach to Health Economic Modelling.

AIMS: Cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome has developed into a global public health crisis. Although integrated care is increasingly used to treat patients with CKM, current health economic models fail to capture the value of considering the CKM syndrome as a unified condition. We present a conceptual framework to guide development of a new health economic model that captures value holistically across interconnected CKM domains. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following best-practice guidelines, we undertook a review of published literature to identify and connect the key biological drivers

Development and evaluation of a novel consensus in silico model within the OECD GL497 defined approach for skin sensitization prediction.

Skin sensitization is a key endpoint in chemical safety assessment, involving multiple key events (KEs) in the adverse outcome pathway. The integrated testing strategy defined approach (ITS-DA) in OECD GL497 combines non-animal methods addressing KE1 and KE3 with an in silico component to predict sensitization. We developed a novel consensus in silico model integrating a rule-based system with metabolic simulation and two statistical models trained on local lymph node assay (LLNA) and guinea pig maximization test (GPMT) data. When applied as the in silico element of the ITS-DA, the model achie

The economic burden of tuberculosis care for patients and households in Africa: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: To summarise the state of knowledge on the economic impact and consequences of tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis and treatment for patients/households in Africa, and to highlight any weaknesses in the work conducted to date. METHODS: We systematically searched for published articles in English between 1990 and June 2010 in eight databases and the World Health Organization (WHO) website. Broad search terms were used ('tuberculosis' OR 'tuberculosis/HIV' AND 'costs' AND 'Africa'). Only studies that reported any costs of TB care for patients/households were retained. All costs were convert
