Dimensions of health-related quality of life in spinal cord injury: Including economic benefits and disease-related barriers in a grounded theory framework.

CONTEXT: Spinal cord injury is a complex and long-term condition that profoundly affects individuals across physical, emotional, social, and economic domains. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the multidimensional structure of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI), incorporating patients' perspectives and extending the scope to include economic benefits and disease-related barriers. METHODS: Using a grounded theory approach, we conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with 32 adult patients receiving care at a public physiotherapy hospi

Longitudinal measures of neighborhood poverty and income inequality are associated with adverse birth outcomes in Texas.

BACKGROUND: Inequity in adverse birth outcomes between black and white women in the U.S. is persistent, despite decades of research and prevention efforts. Neighborhood environments are plausibly related to pre-pregnancy health and other risk factors for adverse birth outcomes and may help explain black/white inequities. Despite the fact that neighborhoods change over time, most prior work has relied upon cross-sectional measures of neighborhood economic contexts. METHODS: We used birth certificates for non-Hispanic black and white women in Texas (2009-2011, N = 470,896) to examine whether lo

Higher socio-economic status of parents may increase risk for bipolar disorder in the offspring.

BACKGROUND: There are conflicting data regarding the socio-economic risk factors for bipolar disorders. The aim of the present study was to explore the association between the socio-economic status of an individual or the parent and the risk for bipolar disorder. METHOD: Two Danish registers were merged. From the data source, we extracted those born in 1960 or later, and those with a first-ever admission to, or contact with, Danish psychiatric facilities during 1981-1998 with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Fifty time-matched controls per case were chosen by the incidence-density sampling me

Risk factors for the development of triple-negative breast cancer versus non-triple-negative breast cancer: a case-control study.

The risk factors for breast cancer have been defined in several studies but there is deficient data for specific subtypes. We report here the pathological characteristics of a breast cancer cohort and risk factors for patients with triple-negative disease. In this case-control study, a prospective breast cancer cohort was evaluated for demographic, reproductive, obesity-related and other risk factors using a validated questionnaire. Tumors were characterized for routine pathological characteristics and immunohistochemical markers of basal-like breast cancer. Patients with triple-negative breas

Rates and predictors of anti-depressant prescribing in Northern Ireland 2011-2015: a data linkage study using the Administrative Data Research Centre (NI).

OBJECTIVES: Research indicates that anti-depressant prescribing is higher in Northern Ireland (NI) than in the rest of the UK, and that socio-economic and area-level factors may contribute to this. The current study provides comprehensive population-based estimates of the prevalence of anti-depressant prescription prescribing in NI from 2011 to 2015, and examined the associations between socio-demographic, socio-economic, self-reported health and area-level factors and anti-depressant prescription. METHODS: Data were derived from the 2011 NI Census (N = 1 588 355) and the Enhanced Prescribing

Socio-economic differences in the health-related quality of life impact of cardiovascular conditions.

BACKGROUND: Those responsible for planning and commissioning health services require a method of assessing the benefits and costs of interventions. Quality-adjusted life years, based on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) estimates, can be used as part of this commissioning process. The purpose of this study was to generate nationally representative HRQoL estimates for cardiovascular disease (heart attack, angina and stroke) and predisposing conditions (diabetes, hypertension and obesity) and assess differential impacts by socio-economic position using data from the Health Survey for Englan

Cost-effectiveness and evidence gaps of advanced technologies in lumbar spine surgery: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Robotic guidance, augmented reality (AR), and emerging artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are increasingly integrated into lumbar spine surgery. While improvements in technical accuracy and perioperative metrics have been widely reported, the economic value and feasibility of adopting these technologies remain uncertain. This scoping review aimed to map and synthesize evidence on cost-effectiveness, economic evaluation approaches, and adoption-related gaps associated with robotic-, AR-, and AI-assisted lumbar spine surgery. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted in accorda

Climate change and malaria in Chiredzi District, Zimbabwe: emerging evidence and pathways towards malaria prevention.

BACKGROUND: Climate change can influence malaria incidence directly and indirectly, impacting vector and parasite dynamics, along with socioeconomic factors influencing malaria risk. In Zimbabwe there is a paucity of research linking climate change, environmental factors, and malaria incidence, hindering coordinated efforts for malaria elimination. Accordingly, the aim of the study was to explore the link between climate change, environmental factors, and malaria incidences, from 2010 to 2022, in Chiredzi district, Zimbabwe. METHODS: A transdisciplinary approach was applied, combining quantit…

Association between health beliefs and patient delay in oral cancer diagnosis in Pakistan: An exploratory factor analysis.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The Health Belief Model (HBM) has been applied to study help-seeking behaviors for various chronic diseases, but the association between HBM and patient delay in oral cancer (OC) diagnosis remains under-explored. The objectives of this study were to describe sociocultural perceptions of OC using the HBM framework and the association between sociocultural perceptions and patient delay in Pakistan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a multicenter cross-sectional study among 152 patients diagnosed with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). We collected data by structured, que

Meta-Resolve of Risk Factors for Nosocomial Infection in Patients Undergoing Thoracic Surgery.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

As we all know, various complications may occur after surgery, and postoperative bleeding and infection are the most common in clinical practice. Postoperative infection mainly manifests as abdominal abscess, peritonitis, and fungal infection. Thoracic surgery is a very common clinical operation. It can directly deal with the relevant lesions, so a better curative effect can usually be obtained. However, patients undergoing thoracic surgery are generally more severely ill, with low immune resistance, long duration, and complicated surgical treatment process. Therefore, the probability of nosoc

Closing the (incarceration) gap: assessing the socio-economic and clinical indicators of indigenous males by lifetime incarceration status.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 1 in 5 to 1 in 6 Indigenous Australian males are currently imprisoned or have previously been imprisoned. Recent work has also pointed to a widening socio-economic gap within the Indigenous population. Given the myriad social, wellbeing and environmental risk factors associated with justice-involvement, it is conceivable that incarceration may contribute to the increasing disparities found within the Indigenous population. This study aimed to explore the presence and extent of an 'incarceration gap' within the Indigenous population and to uncover which social factors

Risk factors for suicide in Hungary: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Hungary previously had one of the highest suicide rates in the world, but experienced major social and economic changes from 1990 onwards. We aimed to investigate the antecedents of suicide in Hungary. We hypothesised that suicide in Hungary would be associated with both risk factors for suicide as identified in Western studies, and experiences related to social and economic restructuring. METHODS: We carried out a controlled psychological autopsy study. Informants for 194 cases (suicide deaths in Budapest and Pest County 2002-2004) and 194 controls were interviewed by clinicians

Gender inequality increases women's risk of hiv infection in Moshi, Tanzania.

This study examined the hypothesis that multiple dimensions of gender inequality increase women's risk for HIV infection using a population-based survey of 1418 women aged 20 to 44 in Moshi, Tanzania. Three forms of HIV exposures were assessed reflecting gender power imbalance: economic exposures (age difference between partners and partner's contributions to children's expenses), physical exposures (coerced first sex and intimate partner violence) and social exposures (ever had problems conceiving). Behavioural risk factors included number of sexual partners for women in the last three years,

The relationship between the neighbourhood environment and adverse birth outcomes.

Intrauterine growth retardation and preterm birth are more frequent in African-American women and women of lower socio-economic status, but the reasons for these disparities are not fully understood. The physical and social environments in which these women live may contribute to these disparities. We conducted a multilevel study to explore whether conditions of mothers' neighbourhood of residence contribute to adverse birth outcomes independent of individual-level determinants. We analysed data from 105 111 births in 1015 census tracts in Louisiana during 1997-98, merging it with data from ot

The effects of economic stress and urbanization on driving behaviours of Boda-boda drivers and accidents in Gulu, Northern Uganda: a qualitative view of drivers.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding motorcyclists' on-the-road behaviour is critical for developing and evaluating interventions specifically targeting them. Risky on-the-road behaviours have historically been subdivided into errors and violations of the rules of road use. Police records could be used to record cyclists' behaviours, however these documents do not necessarily capture all errors and violations. None use of protective wears have been documented in many studies conducted on Boda-boda drivers in Uganda. The relationship between drivers' economic stress and road safety have been studied for

Stillbirth in Greece during the years of economic crisis: a population-based study.

The recent economic crisis has been linked with declines in population health. Evidence on the impact of the crisis on stillbirth rates is scarce. The aim of this study was to assess trends of stillbirth rates in Greece during the pre-crisis (2004-2008) and crisis period (2009-2015) and explore risk factors. Nationwide data (n = 1,276,816 births; 5023 stillbirths) were used to assess rates and trends through Poisson and joinpoint regressions. Multivariable Poisson regressions by nationality were fitted. The overall annual stillbirth rate was 3.9/1000 births with higher rates among non-Greeks (

Video lottery terminal access and gambling among high school students in Montréal.

BACKGROUND: Gambling is a risky behaviour that involves uncertain financial outcomes, can be addictive, and has been associated with strongly adverse social and public health outcomes. We wanted to assess whether socio-economic and gambling-related-opportunity environments of neighbourhoods affected the uptake of video lottery terminal (VLT) gambling among Montréal youth. METHODS: Spatial and statistical analyses were conducted to examine geographical patterns of neighbourhood socio-economic conditions, VLT sites (n=407), and high school locations (n=305) within the Montréal Census Metropolit
