A multi-center longitudinal study on responsive breastfeeding in China from the perspective of health equity: research protocol.

BACKGROUND: Socio-economic inequities can strongly influence suboptimal infant feeding outcomes. Factors such as lack of knowledge about breastfeeding, low family income, low educational attainment, social and economic status, cultural norms and ethnicity may negatively affect success with offering breastfeeding following a responsive feeding approach (ie. responsive breastfeeding). Such inequities can indeed shorten breastfeeding duration, and negatively affect behavioral and cognitive infant outcomes. In China, there is a dearth of studies focusing on breastfeeding from the responsive and he

Application of the theory of planned behavior with agent-based modeling for sustainable management of vegetative filter strips.

This study proposes an innovative socio-hydrological modeling framework for the development of environmental policies that are tailored to farmers' attitudes and economic interests but also optimize environmental criteria. From a farmers' on-site survey, a behavior model is developed based on a modified Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The dynamics of the social and environmental system is implemented by coupling an agent-based model (ABM) with an agro-hydrological model for vegetative filter strips (VFS). A case study is conducted with farmers from the Larqui river basin, Chile to understand

Factors influencing cervical cancer screening in women infected with HIV: a review of the literature.

The purpose of this article is to review and compare factors that influence cervical cancer screening behavior in HIV-infected women and uninfected women. The research literature revealed that age, ethnicity/race, tobacco use, weight, education, economic issues, and risky behaviors such as substance abuse were factors that influenced cervical cancer screening among all women. HIV viral load and CD4+ T lymphocyte count were serologic factors that affected cervical cancer screening in HIV-infected women. Clinicians can use this information to identify patients at risk for poor Pap test adherence

Adverse childhood experiences and gastrointestinal symptoms in US youth: Psychosocial pathways and protective contexts.

OBJECTIVE: Although adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked to gastrointestinal (GI) conditions in children, it remains unclear which specific adversities confer greatest risk and how psychosocial or contextual factors modify these associations. This study identified ACEs most strongly associated with GI symptoms in US youth and evaluated emotional, behavioral, and environmental pathways that may affect these relationships. METHODS: We analyzed nationally representative data from 73,055 US children and adolescents in the 2021-2023 National Survey of Children's Health. Least Abso

Ecological and Syndemic Predictors of Drug Use During Sex and Transactional Sex among U.S. Black Men Who Have Sex with Men: A Secondary Data Analysis from the HPTN 061 Study.

Threats to sexual health among U.S. Black men who have sex with men (MSM) may manifest in a context of social adverse experiences. Situational sex is one such context, which we characterize as sexual behaviors driven either by a desire to cultivate a specific sexual experience or attributable to social vulnerability. Two characterizations of situational sex explored in this study were drug use during sex and transactional sex. Guided by ecological and syndemic frameworks, we conducted a secondary data analysis of social conditions and sexual behaviors among a prospective cohort of Black MSM fr

Spatiotemporal evolution of COVID-19 in Portugal's Mainland with self-organizing maps.

BACKGROUND: Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) are an unsupervised learning clustering and dimensionality reduction algorithm capable of mapping an initial complex high-dimensional data set into a low-dimensional domain, such as a two-dimensional grid of neurons. In the reduced space, the original complex patterns and their interactions can be better visualized, interpreted and understood. METHODS: We use SOM to simultaneously couple the spatial and temporal domains of the COVID-19 evolution in the 278 municipalities of mainland Portugal during the first year of the pandemic. Temporal 14-days cumulat

Who Negotiates? The Political Psychology of Price Negotiations.

Price negotiation is often a zero-sum interaction where one party's gain is another's loss. In such contexts, a buyer's willingness to negotiate can depend on the perceived justifiability of negotiation. This research examines how political ideology shapes these perceptions. Two archival studies (N = 56,615) and four preregistered studies (N = 3,157) show that conservative buyers are more likely to negotiate prices for houses and used cars. Conservatives also hold stronger beliefs that buyers should negotiate prices regardless of the seller's identity-be it a professional dealer, an ordinary s

Adolescent Health and Dark Personalities: The Role of Socioeconomic Status, Sports, and Cyber Experiences.

By investigating the impact of dark personality traits on adolescent health, this study explores the interplay among economic disadvantage, spectator sports involvement, and cyber victimization. We analyzed data from 1844 students aged 13-17 in a school district in the USA, and our findings reveal positive associations between economic disadvantage and both Machiavellianism and psychopathy, influencing negative emotions-driven eating. Spectator sports engagement exhibits links with Machiavellianism and narcissism, suggesting potential drawbacks to competitive behaviors. Cyber victimization sho

Practice guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease in a managed care setting: Part II--Pharmacologic therapy. Alzheimer's Disease (AD) Managed Care Advisory Council.

The progressive loss of social and physical functioning associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) results in extensive social and economic costs to society. The early diagnosis and treatment of AD may reduce cognitive and behavioral symptoms of this disease and may slow disease progression, thereby alleviating some of these social and economic costs. The Alzheimer's Disease Managed Care Advisory Council, a panel of experts from managed care, academic medicine, and the Los Angeles chapter of the Alzheimer's Association was convened to synthesize current evidence-based recommendations for AD diag

The Social Failure Model: Do Classroom Norms Play a Role in the Development of Antisocial Behavior and Depressive Symptoms?

This study examined the moderating role of descriptive and status norms in the stability of youth's antisocial behavior, and the link between initial antisocial behavior and the development of depressive symptoms over the course of one academic year, while controlling for initial depression levels. A total of 1081 students (51.06% girls; grades 4 through 6) in schools in low to average socio-economic status neighborhoods completed self-reports and a peer nomination inventory in the fall (T1) and spring (T2) of one year. Descriptive norms were operationalized as the classroom- and sex-specific

The Empower Nudge lottery to increase dual protection use: a proof-of-concept randomised pilot trial in South Africa.

The objective of this study is to measure the preliminary efficacy of a pilot intervention, grounded in behavioural economics, increasing adherence of dual protection (simultaneous use of effective modern contraception and a barrier method, such as a condom) to protect against HIV, other sexually transmitted infections, and unintended pregnancy. Between 2015 and 2016, 100 women aged 18-40 years, seeking post-abortion care in Cape Town, South Africa were recruited to Empower Nudge, a randomised controlled trial to test a lottery incentive intervention designed to increase dual protection. [Pathological buying -- a literature review].

This review summarizes the literature on pathological buying published during the past 15 years. Pathological or compulsive buying is defined as frequent preoccupation with buying or impulses to buy that are experienced as irresistible, intrusive, and/or senseless. The buying behavior causes marked distress, interferes with social functioning, and often results in financial problems. Studies on the phenomenology, diagnosis, classification, comorbidity, epidemiology, and treatment are presented. Pathological buying should be diagnosed as impulse control disorder not otherwise specified (ICD-10

Navigating the syndemic: a socio-psychological approach to food security and responsible consumption in low-income populations.

Global food security is currently a priority, especially amid a "grim regression" that is undermining efforts to eradicate malnutrition by 2030. This perspective argues that the current crisis is not merely a supply chain disruption but a syndemic convergence where biological threats and economic instability interact to erode consumer agency. We posit that vulnerable populations are forced into a "lethal calculation," prioritizing immediate caloric survival over food security and long-term health, thereby becoming trapped in cycles of ultra-processed food consumption. To address this, we chall
