BACKGROUND: Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is used to restore movements in paretic limbs after severe paralyses resulting from neurological injuries such as spinal cord injury (SCI). Most chronic FES systems utilize an implantable electrical stimulator to deliver a small electric current to the targeted muscle or nerve to stimulate muscle contractions. These implanted stimulators are generally bulky, mainly due to the size of the batteries. Furthermore, these battery-powered stimulators are required to be explanted every few years for battery replacement which may result in surgical f

PURPOSE: The incidence of bite injuries associated with transcranial electrical stimulation motor-evoked potentials monitoring reportedly ranges from 0.13 to 0.19%. However, in clinical practice, bite injuries appear to occur more frequently than previously reported. Our aim was to identify the incidence of and perioperative risk factors associated with bite injuries caused by transcranial electrical stimulation motor-evoked potential monitoring.
METHODS: Patients who underwent elective surgery with transcranial electrical stimulation motor-evoked potential monitoring at a single tertiary hos

BACKGROUND: Investigation of muscle fatigue during functional electrical stimulation (FES)-evoked exercise in individuals with spinal cord injury using dynamometry has limited capability to characterize the fatigue state of individual muscles. Mechanomyography has the potential to represent the state of muscle function at the muscle level. This study sought to investigate surface mechanomyographic responses evoked from quadriceps muscles during FES-cycling, and to quantify its changes between pre- and post-fatiguing conditions in individuals with spinal cord injury.
METHODS: Six individuals w

This study compared muscle oxygenation (StO2) during arm cranking (ACE), functional electrical stimulation-evoked leg cycling (FES-LCE), and hybrid (ACE+FES-LCE) exercise in spinal cord injury individuals. Eight subjects with C7-T12 lesions performed exercises at 3 submaximal intensities. StO2 was measured during rest and exercise at 40%, 60%, and 80% of subjects' oxygen uptake (VO2) peak using near-infrared spectroscopy. StO2 of ACE showed a decrease whereas in ACE+FES-LCE, the arm muscles demonstrated increasing StO2 from rest in all of VO2) peak respectively. StO2 of FES-LCE displayed a dec

OBJECTIVE: Appropriate afferent feedback delivery during the execution of motor tasks is important for rehabilitation after incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI). However, during leg-cycling therapy, the plantar afferent feedback is minimal. We hypothesize that the augmentation of sensory input by combining cycling with a locomotor-like stimulation of plantar cutaneous innervations (ES-cycling), might help to restore proper spinal processing of sensorimotor function.
METHODS: Thirteen non-injured subjects and 10 subjects with iSCI performed 10 minutes of cycling and, on another session, of ES-

Neuropathic pain is a devastating chronic condition and is often induced in the upper limb following nerve injury or damage. Various drugs or surgical methods have been used to manage neuropathic pain; however, these are frequently accompanied by undesirable side effects. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a safe and non-invasive intervention that has been used to alleviate different types of pain in the clinic, but it is unclear whether TENS can improve chronic neuropathic pain in the upper limb. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a single trial o

Muscle atrophy is a disease that is usually caused by denervation. The aim of the present study was to determine whether electrical stimulation by semi-implantable electrodes is capable of decreasing the levels of specific proteins associated with sciatic nerve injury-induced muscle atrophy. Male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats with damaged sciatic nerves were maintained on a 12‑h light/dark cycle. Thirty-two SD rats were randomly allocated into 4 groups (each group, n=8). The rats in group C received no electrical stimulation; the rats in groups D, N and DN received electrical stimulation by semi-im

Localized impedance methods can provide useful approaches for assessing neuromuscular disease. The mechanism of these impedance changes remains, however, uncertain. In order to begin to understand the relation of muscle pathology to surface impedance values, 8 immature rats, 12 mature rats and 8 mature rats that had undergone sciatic crush were killed. Measurement was made on tissue from the gastrocnemius muscle from each animal in an impedance cell, and the conductivity and relative permittivity of the tissue were calculated in both the longitudinal and transverse directions for frequencies o

In paraplegics, gait can be restored by means of functional electrical stimulation (FES). Because the electrophysiological responses of the lower limbs to the neuromuscular stimulus are not completely deterministic, several stimulation strategies have been reported in an attempt to refine stepping motion. In open-loop (OL) systems, the electrical stimulation sequences applied over the leg muscles are often tuned for each patient in order to improve the quality of gait. Our aim was to contrast this traditional technique against variable stimulation sequences based on motion sensors (MS) data fe

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with motor incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI) have difficulty eliciting reactive steps when balance is lost, increasing fall risk. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) applied to the common fibular nerve elicits a flexor withdrawal response, potentially assisting reactive stepping. Combining reactive balance training with FES (Reactive Balance Training [RBT] + FES) may enhance reactive balance control. This study compared the efficacy of RBT + FES to RBT alone in individuals with chronic, motor iSCI.
METHODS: Twenty-two individuals (63.9 ± 14.8 years; 3.8 ± 2.8

Electrical stimulation (EStim) has been used to exercise denervated muscle pending nerve regeneration, to prevent muscle atrophy. However, higher EStim intensity is required to achieve maximal therapeutic efficacy, which is challenging because conventional electrodes generate heat and alter pH, potentially causing tissue damage. Here, we developed and utilized a novel hydrogel ionic circuit (HIC)-based EStim system that is ionically conductive and prevents tissue damage. This HIC was safely used to deliver a high EStim intensity of 32 mA both in vitro and in vivo without substantial cell death

BACKGROUND: The trapezius myocutaneous flap is currently an ideal way to repair severe electrical injuries of the head and neck. However, the tissue level damage caused by high-voltage electrical injuries is more complex, and there are many myocutaneous flap repair procedures. Improper operation will lead to postoperative loss of appearance and function, flap infection and donor site wound dehiscence and other complications. Therefore, the correct choice of surgical technique and the effective design and application of flaps are important.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to show the appli
