Mathematical modelling provides a useful tool for policy making and planning in lymphatic filariasis control programmes, by providing trend forecasts based on sound scientific knowledge and principles. This is now especially true, in view of the ambitious target to eliminate lymphatic filariasis as a public health problem globally by the year 2020 and the short remaining timeline to achieve this. To meet this target, elimination programmes need to be accelerated, requiring further optimization of strategies and tailoring to local circumstances. Insights from epidemiological transmission models

Setaria digitata is a filarial parasite that causes fatal cerebrospinal nematodiasis in goats, sheep and horses, resulting in substantial economic losses in animal husbandry in the tropics. Due to its close resemblance to Wuchereria bancrofti, this nematode is also frequently used as a model organism to study human lymphatic filariasis. This review highlights numerous insights into the morphological, histological, biochemical, immunological and genetic aspects of S. digitata that have broadened our understanding towards the control and eradication of filarial diseases.

Strategies for the control of human parasitic diseases such as onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis require an understanding of how the parasite successfully infects and persists in humans. Despite the fact that the vast majority of infective larvae are eliminated after infection, this 'protection' is far from being an all-or-nothing response. The hypothesis presented here, which is based on epidemiological observations, suggests that the resistance against filarial parasites includes a time-dependent component, probably caused by an early immune response with short-term memory. Validating

BACKGROUND: Mass treatment with diethylcarbamazine (DEC)-medicated salt has been used in a number of places as a control measure for lymphatic filariasis. We sought reliable evidence about its effect on lymphatic filariasis transmission.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of DEC-medicated salt on infection with lymphatic nematodes in studies of individuals and communities.
SEARCH STRATEGY: In August 2006, we searched the Cochrane Infectious Disease Group Specialized Register, CENTRAL (The Cochrane Library 2006, Issue 3), MEDLINE, EMBASE, and LILACS. We also checked reference lists.

Experience from successful global elimination programmes highlights the pivotal role of functional surveillance programmes for confirming cessation of local disease transmission. Lymphatic filariasis is targeted for global elimination by 2020 with an earlier target of 2010 for the Pacific Island countries. No surveillance protocol for confirming filariasis elimination in small island countries has yet been agreed evaluated. Currently recommended surveillance strategies for confirming lymphatic filariasis elimination are not ideal for small Pacific countries. Relying on occasional surveys to de

The basic tenet of the immunological perspective of filarial disease is that differential immune responsiveness among individuals exposed to infection results in the different clinical manifestations that develop. The mechanisms involved in this differential responsiveness appear to reflect different T-cell cytokine response patterns. Asymptomatic patients with the clinically silent presentation of 'asymptomatic microfilaraemia', who have been previously described as being 'immunosuppressed' with respect to their generating pro-inflammatory (Th1-type) immune responses to parasite antigen, are

INTRODUCTION: Lymphatic filariasis (LF), also known as elephantiasis, has been recognized by the world health organization and the centers for disease control and prevention as one of the neglected tropical diseases. The huge prevalence and risk of manifestation to date reflect the poor management of this disease. The disease poses vast public health and socio-economic burdens and generates a dire need for the development of a prophylactic solution for mass administration.
AREAS COVERED: Vaccination has been a sought-out strategy for dealing with ever-evolving infectious diseases and can be d…

The defining images of lymphatic filariasis are the horrendous disfigurements of lymphoedema, elephantiasis and hydrocele. These clinical presentations, although obviously important and life changing, are not, however, the only outcomes of this wide-spread filarial infection. The other effects of the disease range from severe, acute but short-term bouts of sickness to psychological impairment, poverty and family hardship. It is important to support cases of the disease through all means available, such as reparative hydrocelectomy, hygiene training and facilitation, and the provision of adequa…

Filarial parasites are responsible for several serious human diseases with symptoms such as lymphoedema, elephantiasis, and blindness. An understanding of how these parasites pass through developmental checkpoints may elucidate the general mechanisms of these illnesses and suggest potential targets for intervention. A useful model system for the study of human filariasis is the related nematode Dirofilaria immitis, the causative agent of dog heartworm disease. In D. immitis, molting from the third to the fourth larval stage can be induced in vitro by the insect hormone 20-OH ecdysone, suggesti…

Of 98 counties or cities in Hunan Province, 55 were endemic areas of filariasis. The average microfilaria rate was 5.64% (180,046/3,194,102), and the incidence of advanced filariasis, including elephantiasis and hydrocele was 3.29%. The number of filariasis patients in the whole province was estimated to be 1.63 million, comprising 1.25 million of microfilaremia cases, Culex fatigans and Anopheles hyrcanus sinensis were the major vectors of bancroftian and malayan filariasis respectively in the province. Control strategies concentrated on the elimination of infection source were implemented on…

OBJECTIVE: Given the neglected nature of filariasis, especially in Uganda where data are scarce, this cross-sectional study aimed to determine the sero-antigen prevalence of lymphatic filariasis and risk factors associated with non-lymphatic filariasis (podoconiosis) in Busiriba Sub-county, Kamwenge District, Uganda, during August-September 2018, to inform targeted elimination efforts.
RESULTS: We enrolled 101 participants, among whom 35 (34.7%) had podoconiosis. The sero-antigen prevalence of lymphatic filariasis was 1.0%. Older age and walking barefoot were associated with increased podocon

Podoconiosis is a type of tropical lymphedema that causes massive swelling of the lower limbs. The disease is associated with both economic insecurity, due to long-term morbidity-related loss of productivity, and intense social stigma. The geographical distribution and burden of podoconiosis in Africa are uncertain. We applied statistical modelling to the most comprehensive database compiled to date to predict the environmental suitability of podoconiosis in the African continent. By combining climate and environmental data and overlaying population figures, we predicted the environmental suit

BACKGROUND: Podoconiosis is a chronic non-infectious preventable disease. Though not fatal, it may cause social, economic and physical disability. Ethiopia is projected to bear one-fourth (25%) of the global burden of podoconiosis. Despite its huge economic impact and chronic morbidity and disability, podoconiosis seems to be neglected. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of podoconiosis and its associated factors in Gamo zone, Southern Ethiopia.
METHODS: A community based cross sectional study was conducted among 683 household members. A multistage sampling method w
