Persistent left superior vena cava: Review of embryologic anatomy and considerations for cardiopulmonary bypass.

The purpose of this report is to alert the perfusionist to the anatomy of persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) and the intraoperative complications that this anomaly may present. The perfusionist should be able to devise a venous circuit that will accommodate three cannulae. He should also be aware that, during cardiopulmonary bypass, a copious volume of deoxygenated blood from the left heart sump, with simultaneous cerebral congestion, may signal the presence of undocumented PLSVC.

Embryologic pathogenesis of renal agenesis associated with cervical vertebral anomalies (Klippel-Feil phenotype).

Existing embryologic data suggest that the blastema of the cervical vertebrae, scapulae, and the genitourinary system have an intimate spatial relationship at the end of the 4th or beginning of the 5th week of fetal life. An alteration in this region can affect the cervical vertebrae and scapulae directly, and the genitourologic changes are mediated indirectly through the inductive capacity of the pronephric duct. The genitourinary malformation documented in patients with a specified Klippel-Feil phenotype support such an embryologic pathogenesis. Urologic pathology, in both sexes, is consiste

[Report of a case of aplasia of the cervix and discussion of the embryology and clinical significance of the condition (author's transl)].

A case of aplasia of the uterine cervix and partial atresia of the vagina in a 17 year old woman is reported. A hysterectomy was done and a new vagina created. The literature on the origin of the different parts of the female genital tract is reviewed and discussed. Interpretation of the embryologic origin of the different parts is difficult. The indication for the hysterectomy was prevention of further endometriosis by retrograde menstruation, high probability of infertility because of the lack of the cervix and high probability of ascending infection should a new vagina be connected directly

Evaluating the role of follicular output rate in clinical and embryological outcomes in IVF: a prospective study.

PURPOSE: To examine the association between follicular output rate (FORT) and embryological and clinical outcomes, including live birth rate, in patients undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF). METHODS: This prospective cohort study enrolled 166 patients undergoing IVF between October 2023 and January 2025. FORT was calculated as the ratio of pre-ovulatory follicles (16-24 mm) on trigger day to baseline antral follicle count (AFC; 3-9 mm), multiplied by 100. Patients were stratified into low, medium, and high FORT tertiles, and FORT was also evaluated as a continuous variable in multivariabl

Ciliopathies in Complex Congenital Heart Disease: Molecular Genetics, Embryologic Mechanisms and Clinical Implications.

Background/Objectives: Congenital heart malformations (CHDs) are not rare diseases, and, in many cases, their pathogenic mechanisms are well established. Several conotruncal defects are associated with genetic syndromes such as DiGeorge syndrome and RASopathies, reflecting shared developmental pathways affecting cardiac outflow tract formation. However, even common CHDs may occur within complex syndromic contexts, making early diagnosis essential for optimal management. This review aims to provide a unifying framework linking ciliary dysfunction to CHD phenotypes. Methods: We performed an inte

Exploring Variations in Median Nerve Formation: Embryological Basis and a Pathway to Improved Clinical Outcomes.

Aim This study investigated the gross anatomical variability in the formation of the median nerve and evaluated its clinical and surgical implications. The research aimed to observe variations in median nerve root formation, compare differences between sides and genders, and to understand the embryological basis of these variations. Materials and methods A cadaveric investigation was conducted on 60 upper limbs (ULs) from 30 embalmed adult cadavers (15 males and 15 females). An infraclavicular approach was used for dissection, following standard dissection protocols. The number of roots formin

Intrapericardial Extralobar Pulmonary Sequestration: A Case Report and Systematic Review of a Unique Embryologic Variant.

Background: Intrapericardial extralobar pulmonary sequestration (ELPS) is an exceptionally rare congenital malformation. The location may mimic neoplastic lesions and poses diagnostic and surgical challenges. We present a new case and a systematic review of the literature. Case Presentation: A 3-month-old male infant was referred for evaluation of a congenital intrathoracic mass suspected to be an extralobar sequestration. However, intrapericardial location was not recognized. MRI and CT demonstrated a circumscribed lesion with arterial supply from the right pulmonary artery. Thoracoscopic exp

Does embryologic basilar fusion type impact basilar apex aneurysm treatment outcomes?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Basilar apex aneurysms can be challenging entities for both open and endovascular treatment. The basilar artery forms from fusion of the paired longitudinal neural arteries that produces several anatomical morphologies known to correlate with basilar aneurysm formation. There is paucity of literature on these morphologic types on aneurysm treatment. The aim of this study was to examine endovascular treatment outcomes of basilar apex aneurysms based on embryologic fusion type. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of aneurysm databases from one American and on

Embryological and pregnancy outcomes of IVF-ET in overweight/obese and normal-weight women with PCOS.

INTRODUCTION: Female obesity has been conclusively associated with compromised fertility, adverse pregnancy outcomes and higher risks of obstetric and neonatal complications. However, it remains unclear whether the adverse outcomes observed in IVF treatments among women with obesity are primarily due to obesity itself or to underlying pathologies such as PCOS. Studies investigating the impact of overweight/obesity compared to normal weight in women with PCOS have yielded inconsistent findings. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 4083 women with PCOS undergoing the first IVF-ET cycle with ant

Effect of High Glucose on Embryological Development of Zebrafish, Brachyodanio, Rerio through Wnt Pathway.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a worldwide pregnancy complication. Gestational diabetes can significantly impact fetus development. However, the effects of high glucose on embryological development post-fertilization are yet to be researched. Danio rerio embryos are a great model for studying embryonic development. In this study, the effects on embryological (morphological and genetic) development were examined in the presence of a high-glucose environment that mimics the developing fetus in pregnant women with GDM. Fertilized zebrafish embryos were treated with normal media and high g

A Case Report on Ellis-van Creveld Syndrome: Clinical, Embryological, Anesthetic, and Surgical Implications.

Postaxial polydactyly (PAP) in the form of rudimentary soft tissue masses is quite common. Management involves ligation or surgical excision. Rarely do literature discussions cover complex variants in which the extra finger is fully developed. Ellis-van Creveld syndrome (EVC) or chondroectodermal dysplasia is a rare disorder characterized by PAP. When chondral dysplasia encompasses PAP, dwarfism, and genu valgum, ectodermal dysplasia involves nails and teeth. We describe two EVC cases. When one had cardiac malformations, the other had dental anomalies. One of them underwent genu valgum correct

Sliding ureteral inguinal hernia: An uncommon embryological trick. Case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Inguinoscrotal herniation of the bladder is a rare clinical entity, with a frequency between 0.5% and 4% of all inguinal hernias. When the whole bladder and ureters migrate into the scrotum, it may cause urinary disorders as hydronephrosis. CASE REPORT: A 77-year-old male patient suffering from hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, obesity and diabetic disease presented with urinary disorders and left-sided inguinoscrotal hernia. Under clinical suspicion of sigmoid colon involvement in the inguinal canal, abdominal and pelvic computed tomography (CT scan) with endovenous cont

Common arterial trunk with intact septum and hypoplastic right ventricle: An uncommon embryological entity.

Embryologically, the common arterial trunk (CAT) is due to the failure of septation by the major outflow cushions. This invariably leads to the presence of an associated large juxta-arterial ventricular septal defect. Overriding of the ventricular septum leads to its biventricular origin in more than 2/3rd of cases. Uncommonly, CAT may be associated with an intact ventricular septum (IVS) and univentricular origin. We describe an infant with CAT, intact IVS, hypoplastic right ventricle, and Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve who presented to us and palliated successfully. The embryologic

A Unique Conglomeration of Variations in the Celiac, Hepatic, and Superior Mesenteric Artery: A Clinico-Embryological Perspective.

This paper highlights a rare variation in the branching pattern of the celiac trunk and superior mesenteric arteries, as observed during cadaveric dissection. It was found that the celiac trunk gave origin to the following: (1) left inferior phrenic artery, (2) hepatogastric trunk which gave three branches: the left gastric artery, esophageal branch, and a left hepatic artery, (3) splenic artery, and (4) common hepatic artery. The superior mesenteric artery gave origin to the right hepatic artery, and the common hepatic artery gave origin to a middle hepatic artery. Such rare variations must b

Surgery along the embryological planes for colon cancer: a systematic review of complete mesocolic excision.

BACKGROUND: Complete mesocolic excision (CME) for colonic cancer offers a surgical specimen of higher quality, with higher number of lymph nodes compared to conventional colectomy. However, evidence on oncological outcomes is limited. The aim of the present study is to review recent literature and provide more information regarding the effect of CME colectomy on short- and long-term outcomes. METHOD: PubMed and MEDLINE databases were searched, and articles in English reporting data on CME were reviewed. Intraoperative events; postoperative morbidity and mortality; histopathological characteri
