Pathways from adverse childhood experiences to parenting competence: the roles of cognitive emotional regulation and social support.

Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked to various physical and psychological problems in adulthood, with their effects even carrying over into the next generation through disrupted parenting. To better address the impact of ACEs, identifying the key mediating and moderating factors that influence parenting outcomes is crucial. Objective: This study examined the relationships among ACEs, adaptive and maladaptive cognitive emotional regulation (CER), social support and sense of parenting competence within a sample of Korean mothers of infants. Methods: In this descriptiv…

Cognitive activation and emotional regulation effects of olfactory intervention in the context of advanced driver assistance systems.

OBJECTIVE: Olfactory stimulation is an emerging sensory activation approach that can effectively mitigate passive distraction in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Therefore, it is necessary to further determine its efficacy and to elucidate its differential effects within urban and highway driving environments. METHODS: A simulated vehicle cabin odor mixture served as the control baseline. Peppermint and bergamot were selected as intervention odors after screening. Thirty-four licensed drivers completed simulated driving under urban or highway conditions across three odor conditions,

Cultural fiction as predictive-affective simulation: a neurocognitive model of male emotional regulation and gender violence prevention.

This conceptual article develops an integrative framework connecting the Tie-Up Theory of affective receptivity with predictive processing models of brain function, in order to advance a neurocognitive understanding of the emotional mechanisms underlying gender-based violence and its prevention. Departing from the observation that feminicide cannot be explained solely through sociological or ideological variables, the paper focuses on its emotional and predictive precursors, particularly the inability to tolerate frustration, rejection, or loss without attempting to restore control. Drawing on

Clarity and Emotional Regulation as Protective Factors for Adolescent Well-Being: A Moderated Mediation Model Involving Depression.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent well-being is influenced by emotional regulation and clarity, particularly in contexts of depression, stress, and anxiety. OBJECTIVE: This study explores how depression mediates the relationship between emotional regulation and well-being and whether emotional clarity moderates this interaction, providing a comprehensive model to understand adolescent mental health. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 636 Chilean adolescents aged 10-18. Emotional clarity and regulation were assessed using the TMMS-24 scale, depression with the DASS-21 scale, and s…

Emotional regulation as a mediating variable between risk of psychosis and common mental health problems in adolescents.

The main clinical high-risk of psychosis (CHRp) approaches are focused on core features of schizophrenia that might surface in the prodromal phases, mainly psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) (e.g., prodromal or schizotypal symptoms) or associated phenomena like basic symptoms or anomalous experiences of the self. Given that PLEs vary depending on distress levels, related common mental health problems, emotional regulation (ER) strategies and eventual clinical outcomes, exploring the heterogeneous nature of these PLEs and their psychological correlates could aid in distinguishing between subclin…

Methylation of genes and regulation of inflammatory processes on emotional response in young adults with alcoholic parents.

Many Americans are adult children of an alcoholic parent (ACoA), which can confer an increased risk of trauma and hazardous alcohol use, as well as heritable and environmental genetic influence. Psychological health and related neural activity can be influenced by inflammation responses, but it is not clear how these factors interact regarding risk or resilience to hazardous alcohol use. The goals of this study were to better understand the relationships between current alcohol use and inflammation, how these are modified by single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and/or epigenetic modification

Test Anxiety in Spanish Adolescents: Examining the Role of Emotional Attention, and Ruminative Self-focus and Regulation.

Emotional attention has been found as a key predictive dimension of stress. However, very few studies have investigated the relationship between emotional attention and test anxiety. The objective of the present study was to analyze the role of emotional attention, measured using the Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS), on the level of test anxiety, and measured using the Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI). In addition, we examined the potential mediating role of Self-Rumination and Self-Reflection, as measured through the Rumination-Reflection Questionnaire (RRQ), on the relationship between emotional att

Emotional regulation, dissociation, and the self-induced dermatoses: clinical features and implications for treatment with mood stabilizers.

The self-induced dermatoses (such as trichotillomania, pathologic skin picking or neurotic excoriations, dermatitis artefacta, onychophagia … and severity of the self-injurious behaviors are directly related to acute or chronic problems with emotional regulation and dissociation. This may be part of the reason that there is a relative paucity of effective treatments for these disorders. The skin and its appendages are well innervated with a dense network of afferent sensory nerves and efferent autonomic ner …

Parental burnout among military fathers: The moderating roles of unit support, marital satisfaction, and emotional regulation strategies.

OBJECTIVE: The military family stress model (Gewirtz et al., 2018) was used to examine the associations between deployment experiences, interpersonal relationships, and four aspects of parental burnout-emotional exhaustion, contrast in parental self, fed-up feelings, and emotional distancing from the child-among military fathers. The study focused on testing main and moderating effects for these variables. METHOD: A total of 105 Israeli military fathers deployed to combat zones completed self-report questionnaires on deployment exposure, emotion regulation, unit and spousal support, and paren

Elucidating the role of mind-body connection profiles in emotional reactivity and regulation amongst typically developed adults.

BACKGROUND: Adaptive emotional functioning necessitates a strong mind-body connection. The 13-item Body-Mind Connection Questionnaire (BMCQ) was developed to measure attention directed to sensations (Interoceptive Attention), identifying and describing sensations associated with emotions (Sensation-Emotion Articulation), and beliefs regarding mind-body integration and wellbeing (Body-Mind Values). This study aimed to (1) confirm and refine the BMCQ in a new sample of typically developed adults through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), (2) identify distinct mind-body connection profiles throu

Suicidal Ideation, Depression, Anxiety, Impulsivity, Self-Esteem, Emotional Regulation, Child Trauma and Hopelessness in Korean Military Soldiers.

Background/Objectives: Suicide is the leading cause of death among South Korean military soldiers, accounting for more than 70% of all deaths. This issue is particularly relevant in the military context due to the nature of living in groups in a controlled environment. This study was conducted active-duty south Korean male soldiers aged 18 to 28 who were performing mandatory military service for one year and six months. Additionally, it compares and analyzes the differences in suicidal ideation and risk factors between military soldiers and a comparison group consisting of males in their 20s w

Trauma, Emotional Regulation, and Coping Styles in Individuals with and without Probable Dissociative Disorders in Hong Kong.

Previous studies showed that dissociation and dissociative disorders (DDs) are prevalent and are associated with considerable individual and social consequences. There are ongoing debates regarding whether dissociation is a response to betrayal trauma across cultures and whether dissociation can be explained by maladaptive coping. Additionally, little is known about the clinical features of individuals with DDs in the Chinese context. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between trauma, emotional regulation, coping, and dissociation. We analyzed baseline data from a randomized cont…

The relationship between emotional regulation and hemispheric lateralization in depression: a systematic review and a meta-analysis.

From a neurobiological perspective, diverse studies have associated emotional regulation with cognitive deficits. Structural and/or metabolic changes in the frontal cortex are often inferred from dysfunction in cognitive-emotional processing. In addition, electroencephalographic findings support the idea that alpha band oscillations are responses to these same processes. Thus, the objective of this meta-analytical literature review is to verify whether the possible hemispheric lateralization attributed to frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) correlates with emotional regulation and the cognitive defi…

Towards an Explanatory Model of Suicidal Ideation: The Effects of Cognitive Emotional Regulation Strategies, Affectivity and Hopelessness.

Suicide constitutes a public health problem that has a significant economic, social and psychological impact on a global scale. Recently, the American Psychological Association has indicated that suicide prevention should be a public health priority. Suicidal ideation appears as a key variable in suicide prevention. The objective of this research was to verify the adjustment of an explanatory model for suicidal ideation, which considers the effects of cognitive emotion regulation strategies, affectivity and hopelessness. An open mode on-line sample of 2,166 Argentine participants was used and

Emotion regulation difficulties are selectively associated with executive and behavioural apathy in Huntington's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Apathy occurs frequently in psychiatric and neurological disorders and is associated with functional impairment, reduced quality of life, and caregiver burden. Its underlying mechanisms are incompletely understood, but recent studies indicate that apathy is multidimensional and has heterogeneous manifestations across disorders. Self-regulatory processes, such as emotion regulation, may contribute to these manifestations, but this relationship has received little attention. Huntington's disease (HD) provides a clinical model for examining whether emotion regulation difficulties are a

Emotion regulation diversity and depressive symptoms in mid- to older adulthood: A longitudinal investigation.

Depression is associated with emotion regulation (ER) impairments. ER diversity has been proposed as novel measure of the diversity of the ER repertoire and has been linked to clinical depression status cross sectionally. A more diverse ER repertoire, particularly under stressful circumstances, may protect against depressive symptom elevation longitudinally. This study used a longitudinal design to examine the within- and between-person associations between ER diversity, stress, and depression in mid- to later life adults. ER strategy use, perceived stress, and depressive symptoms were assesse

The Psychometric Properties and Clinical Usefulness of the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale in Forensic Settings.

OBJECTIVE: The Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) is a widely used measure of emotion dysregulation across clinical contexts. However, its psychometric properties and clinical utility have not been thoroughly examined in forensic populations. This study evaluated the original 36-item DERS and two short forms, the DERS-16 and the DERS-8, in two independent forensic samples from two different countries: a forensic psychiatric inpatient sample (N = 88) and a prison sample (N = 389). METHODS: Confirmatory factor analysis was used to assess factor structure. Reliability was evaluated
